T.T it so farking hard to catch carangidae family fish. T.T
even harder to bring it back in a healthy state.
recently I found out that there are actually two fish in Malaysia that's marketed as bawal emas.
one is Trachinotus blochii which is snubnose pompano.

and this Trachinotus falcatus the permit.

here's how you tell the diffent. although its easier if you just keep in mind that the one with yellow tail and fin is a pompano. the one without is a permit.

now here's another fact that most people don't know.
regard to the way Malaysian name their fish.
black pomfret - bawal hitam
white pomfret - bawal putih
Chinese silver pomfret - bawal tambak
bumpnose trevally - bawal cermin
snubnose pompano - bawal emas
fish that looks alike doesn't always meant that they are from the same family or are they related.
here's why.
black pomfret ( Parastromateus niger ) , snubnose pompano ( trachinotus blochii ) and bumpnose trevally ( Carangoides hedlandensis ) are actualy species of fish belonging to the carangidae family. they are not pomfret.
white pomfret ( Pampus argenteus ) and Chinese silver pomfret ( pampus chinensis ) on the other hand is a true pomfret from the family species of fish call stromateidae.......this category of fish also related to the butterfish.
i'm too lazy to post up their pick. you numbnuts just google them yourself kay!
and yes this is also one of the few carangidae family fishes that I dying to have in my tank. what can I say I got a thing for yellow tails.
I live eating this fish
