I'm looking for a camera that's compact enough to lug around easily, and good in low light. Like taking a shot in sunset for example.

Doesn't have to be a stellar performer, but decent with enough of an upgrade from a regular point-and-shoot. If it helps, I have been using a Panasinic LZ8. Kinda hit-and-miss when shooting in low light without the flash.

Main points:
- Anything from RM1000-1700 is preferred. Already stretched my budget with a new laptop recently.
- Nothing professional, just trying to take decent photos for vacations and such.
- Compact. I don't want to look like a wedding or National Geographic's photographer.
- Doesn't have to have interchangeable lens. The additional prices for lenses don't justify what I have in mind for it. But, if you insist that I might have use for that in the future, and if it is within my budget, go ahead and suggest one. However it better come with a lens already.
- Pixels don't matter. The pictures are only for regular albums and mid-sized frames.

There are so many I'm confused trying to compare them, so I hope the more experienced can shed some light. biggrin.gif

How about Sony RX100 mark 1? It's really popular and getting many positive reviews from many sites. I have a contact who uses it, he recommend this.

To take good photo at night, a friend of mine say need to use higher ISO setting and a tripod to prevent image blur. Normally our hand will shake causing image blur.

Sony website says it's RM2000+, which is real?

That's quite a big aperture. I've looked at reviews and it seems quite alright, might lose a little with the zoom though but I think it wouldn't be much of an inconvenience. I will put it in my short list.

I want the easiest way to get the lowest noise with the best exposure. So that means getting the right amount of light first is my priority, then I look at ISOs. I know ISO can work well but correct exposure at the lowest ISO possible is better. Getting that correct exposure with my current camera is a bit difficult, hence the upgrade for a "brighter" camera.

I'm a casual photographer, but I do take it a bit seriously than usual when I do get my hands on a camera. tongue.gif

u can take a look at the new canon S120. that thread is not mine btw, just to give u an example of the camera and the price. I liked the S series a lot as I used to have the S95 which belonged to my dad and I used it. They can only be improving it, right? tongue.gif

Sony rx100 both mk 1 and 2 is good.
Canon G16 (or similar series) is good too.
Panasonic LX 7 is also having good review.
Go test out the camera in the shop to decide.

That prolly Mark 2. There are two version now. Mark 2 with wifi added feature. Usually official site does not provide the actual market price (they usually much more expensive) you have to go to the shop to really know the price exactly. icon_rolleyes.gif

DPREVIEW rounded-up nicely high end pocketable cameras of 2013

user posted image

And they recommend RX100 & S120

Read Here : http://www.dpreview.com/articles/993518136...-2013-roundup/7

But they put S120 into their pcoket in the end

Personally i choose s120 too coz it is latest come with bunch of features, it also come with touch screen and wifi. RX100 on the other hand has Sony RX100MII and Sony QX100 as successors and they're not even in the list.

BTW if sensor size is all that matter dpreview should recommend the fullframe sensor RX1 instead.

Maybe they're cheapskate too.

RX100 is RM2199(rebate RM500) http://www.sony.com.my/microsite/sony-time...italCamera.html

*S120 is RM1599 http://www.canon.com.my/personal/products/...languageCode=EN

*i'll be buying (i think) the silver version from Japan http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/131044379754

S120 has the aperture but that isn't the final deciding factor when looking at a good low-light camera. It does have Wifi and such and seemingly have all the right things. Good reviews too as chokia pointed out, but I don't know. Priced awfully close to the G15 and not that far from the G16, and I'm not sure I even like touch-dominant controls.

I'd put it in the maybe pile. smile.gif

If I can find the RX100 mk I at the right price I'd try it when I see it. Don't need a Wifi so I'd skip the mk II.
I have been eyeing on the G15. I don't know if DIGIC 6 and Wifi and other small stuff in the G16 will be worth paying extra, so I shall test both.
LX7 so far caught my interest the most, but that may change when I get to hold it myself.

Thanks. smile.gif

Oh I see. I think it's best to go to a dedicated camera shop or something to get the best price instead of a Sony dealer right?

Hmmm...actually as long as it's not an actual full-sized pro camera I'm fine. The form factor doesn't matter as long as it's relatively inconspicuous.

So far I've got Panasonic LX7, Sony RX100 mk I, Fuji X100S, and Canon G15/16. Then maybe a Canon S120.
That just about covers every big name brand, except Nikon and Olympus.

Appreciate all of you guys' input very very much. I'm gonna allocate time this weekend searching for these. biggrin.gif

the Fuji x100s is quite expensive, around rm3k. how bout a used x100? i would suggest the rx100 mk1 too, since it's quite cheap now with good enough IQ for normal people. not to mention it can zoom which i don't think any compact camera in that size/ price and offer equal performance.
