Hi guys. Just got my MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina mid-2015 model.

My previous Macs were the MacBook Pro 13" Retina 2014 model, and the first-gen of MacBook Pro 15" Retina back in 2012.

What I can say is the main key differentiator now in the latest model is the blazing fast SSD (speeds very much improved from the already-fast SSDs used in previous MacBook Pro Retina models). I just installed Microsoft Office 2016 and it took about much less than 60 seconds to install. Very snappy!

And the Force Touch trackpad is just sublime. The haptic feedback of the normal 'click' and 'force click' makes it feel just like the mechanical click-switches in the previous MacBook Pro trackpads. Thus, I would reckon that the durability of the Force Touch Trackpad is much better than the previous ones too (I remember back in 2010 I read about mechanical click-switch failures in the previous MacBook Pro trackpads due to heavy / rough usage).

Anyway, still looking forward to the MacBook Pro 2016 models which are due to launch early next year. If they offer colour options (Space Grey, Gold, etc.) similar to the MacBook 12" Retina 2015, finally we may see a completely 'new' MacBook Pro. biggrin.gif

My 128GB model now left with only 30GB cry.gif
Most of the space taken by “others”

Should just use the SSD space for apps only then.
For other items, can try using a SD card to be placed permanently in the SD card slot. biggrin.gif

Woah! You upgrade your laptop like you would with your iPhone.

Anyway, one thing is for sure if Apple follows the new MacBook's design language, new rMBP's will have no illuminated front Apple logo and resembles MBA's design.
*
These days iPhones can cost nearly as much as a MacBook. So maybe times have changed. biggrin.gif

Yes, I really love the illuminated Apple logo on the lid too. Let's just hope they give us more colour options and USB-C, while maintaining everything else. The new keyboard mechanism used in MacBook Retina 12" is bad to me, with the key actuations having really shallow depth and it seems to have plenty of durability issues with so many complaints about it in the Apple support forums.

yes, the SSD is the main concern i changed to latest MacBook Pro, but i had 1 question here, i used Excel quite a lot, i'm currently using Office 2016, even with the this MacBook Pro, it will take some time for me to generate a chart from 10K rows data. actually what's the real factor that can improve the performance of Excel? sometimes it might like not responding (Cursor turning) when i scroll thru the sheet.

Office 2016 for Mac has been vastly improved from all previous iterations of Office for Mac. But yes, it is still not up to par with its Window's version but it's quite close (from my little experience with it). Let's hope future updates change this.

U bought it brand new the mid 2015 model? Why are u looking forward to 2016 and again u bought the 2015 model?

Need to clear budget allocated by company before end of 2015. Was waiting for the refresh of the mid-2015 model which is supposed to be due in November 2015, but sadly still no news.

yeah, think to use ms apps just use either boot camp or parallel or VMware fusion is the best option.
*
VMware Fusion or Parallel is the better choice now? I purchased Parallels about 3 years ago, but that version is outdated.

Would love to hear your opinions.

dun know latest 2015 version of macbook is it affected or not?

my colleague is using mid 2014 15-inch rMBP, his one was affected.
*
When I had my MacBook Pro Retina 15" first batch from mid-2012, I never experienced this issue in the 2 years I was using it.

Could it be only affecting the 2013/2014 MacBook Pros? Maybe defective parts by a supplier for those batches.

Anyway, good to hear that it's covered under warranty anyway.

Hi all,

I am an alien to the mac product. Just curious, all macbook comes with this kind of power cord (see image below)? Not the typical malaysia standard 3 pin plug

Does that mean everyone need to buy the adapter kit?
*
It depends on the region the MacBook was officially sold.

Malaysian sets (and certain countries) use the 3-Pin Malaysia/UK-type plug.

Other countries (such as US) use the plug as shown in your photo.

You can easily use any standard adapter to use with it to change the adapter-type. The Apple chargers are all universally-compatible so no worries.

Thanks for the reply..

Even at the official apple for malaysia shows what is the box, the US one as you puts it.
Just wondering whether that means everyone needs to buy an adapter?

The picture shown in your link is a standard photo used by Apple.

If you buy a Malaysian set, 100% you will receive the UK/Malaysia-type 3-point plug.

If you didn't receive such a plug, than your set is most likely not an official Malaysian set.

I bought mine way back in end 2014 and it came with the standard 3 pin. I am surprised if a local distributor here sells you a non malaysian set?!?
*
Maybe he bought used set, online or from non-authorised resellers. But no issues anyway. Apart from the plug, there's virtually no other difference. Even warranty for non-Malaysian sets can be claimed in Malaysian Apple service centres.

ughh had a very bad apple day yesterday... my iphone 6s suddenly freeze with a blurred screen, had to force restart and half of my contacts went missing... even icloud seems to only have my very very old contacts although i've already on contacts sync with icloud...

just after that my MBPr 13" suddenly have the horizontal jagged colour lines and froze! Restarted dozen times and it'll either get stuck/hang 1 min after going back to the main screen, or even while booting up in the middle of the apple logo. There's no spinning wheel freeze, you can't even see the mouse cursor. Totally hanged...

For now it seems okay, but i have a feeling if i restart the MBPr it'll start to hang again..
*
Ouch. Sorry to hear that mate.

Are you going to proceed with claiming warranty for the MBPr 13"?

As for the 6S issue, so far never faced such issue with my contacts, but then again my contacts are synchronised with Google and not iCloud.

exactly what is my mine... but 15' not that portable thou...

Having personally used the first gen 15" Retina for 2 years, then switching to the 13" Retina for about 1 year, and now finally back to a 15" Retina again, I have to say that screen size does really matter. It's just perfectly sized for side-by-side app usage, photo-editing, and graphics creation. Surfing the web is also a better experience.

On the portability front, yes, the 13" Retina is undoubtedly the best everyday-carry winner here. You basically will not feel it much. However, I also carry the 15" Retina a lot everyday on a messenger-style sling bag, and I don't really feel it too since it's only 2.04 kg. I normally do not bring the charger with me since it is rated for 9-hours wireless web and the performance does not disappoint. The 13" Retina is rated for 10-hours so technically it should have even better battery life than the 15" Retina.

The last bit that I like more on the 15" Retina is its dual fan design. The 13" Retina used to have a dual mini-fan design, but it was reengineered to a single large-fan design. Each design has their own pros and cons, but its just a personal preference for me.

That's all I can that I can think for now apart from the already-mentioned differences in CPU cores and graphics hardware.

Happy deciding. nod.gif

Have a feeling my graphics card has busted... Some times the MBPr freeze like this:

user posted image

But most of the time it just hangs despite multiple restarts. Tried the option D or just D during startup to test hardware but pointless as it gets stuck even during the process!
This is leaving a bad taste in my mouth on Apples laptops..
*
Whoa! That's bad.

Time to backup all your data and prep your 13" Retina for a warranty claim. Do update us on the process. notworthy.gif

When I claimed warranty for my first gen 15" Retina back in 2013 due to a screen defect, they replaced a brand new display for me and I could collect the machine back in just 3 days time.

All the best! icon_rolleyes.gif
