haha, may be it's a phobia, i lost pic in hdd b4 because hdd crash and lost data in CD because it got scratch...so now very scare of lost data again, might as well keep 2 to 3 copy as spare 
Well for myself I will backup them into 2 copies of DVD+R and keep them well 
Maybe you want to try to keep those DVDs that you backup in a hard case or somewhere that safe from scratches
