Been staying here for 2 years and I always go Lim Kee only. No wonder the restaurant looks so familiar. Gonna give it a shot later. Gasteracantha cancriformis ♀ by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThis particular spider has a lot of nick names such as the star spider, spiny-backed orbweaver, spiny orbweaver spider, crab-like orbweaver spider, crab-like spiny orbweaver spider, jewel spider, spiny-bellied orbweaver, jewel box spider, smiley face spider or sometimes in the Philippines, the king. This species of spider does not live very long. In fact, the lifespan lasts only until reproduction, which usually takes place in the spring following the winter when they hatched. Females die after producing an egg mass, and males die six days after a complete cycle of sperm induction to the female. Monkey hopper (Erucius sp.?) by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrMonkey Hopper, a grasshopper in the family Eumastacidae. Monkey hoppers are the most brightly coloured grasshoppers that I’ve ever seen. They also have the odd nickname of “matchstick grasshoppers”, probably because their long hind legs always seem to be awkwardly sized for their bodies, and stick out to the side all akimbo. Gnaphosidae? by Soo Yeak Choo, on Flickr Gnaphosidae? by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThis particular spider is very fast. It can be found in tree trunks. This extraordinary spider can be identified by its special long and curvy "tails". As they can really sprint, they don't really need to spin webs to catch their preys. Parasteatoda mundula ♀ by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrA common Theridiidae spider in Malaysia, Rolled-Leaf Comb-Footed Spiders love to live inside a rolled leaf suspended at the centre of the web. The female spider will often be found within the leaf, with pink-to-yellowish, egg “balls”. We can rarely see a spider feeds on an ant. This is because ant contains formic acid. Bavia sexpunctata ♂ by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrBavia species are around 6 to 11 mm long in both sexes. Species of this genus are slender with long legs. This is an impromptu shot without a proper flashgun. Saw it at the bushes near the parking lot of a garden. |

More macro shots coming through!
Long legged fly (Dolichopodidae) by Soo Yeak Choo, on Flickr Long legged fly (Dolichopodidae) by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrDolichopodidae generally are small flies with large, prominent eyes and a metallic cast to their appearance, though there is considerable variation among the species. Most have long legs, though some do not. Most adults are predatory on other small animals, though some may scavenge or act as kleptoparasites of spiders or other predators. Caterpillar by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrAn unknown caterpillar crawling slowly on the three branch. Common Clubtail (Ictinogomphus decoratus) by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThe large and striking Common Flangetail (Ictinogomphus decoratus), extremely common and easiest-to-find member of the goggle-eyed family Gomphidae in both Singapore and Malaysia. Tetragnathidae by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrUnknown Tetragnathidae resting on her web. Unknown spider by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrLooks like a lynx spider to me. But still not sure. Can anyone help to ID this spider? |

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Oct 13 2015, 01:36 PM) Dead Leaf Mantis cleaning its forelegs by Ji Tan, on FlickrA young dead leaf mantis cleaning its forelegs after a meal. They often clean up when there's water too. Dead leaf mantises are so called because of their brown-coloured camouflage that works best among dead leaves, making them virtually invisible! Cooperative fella, love shooting mantises; if only they are common T_T More on Macro Photography here: PixelsDimension Check out Malaysia's wildlife here: WildLife Malaysia |

Heterometrus spinifer by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThe Giant Forest Scorpion or Giant Blue Scorpion. This particular species is hardy, quiet but quite aggressive. The Malaysian Forest Scorpion is quite defensive and will readily sting when it feels cornered or in danger. Scorpions tend to glow under UV illumination as a result of chemical reactions happening within the carapace. Long has been discussed the reasons behind this UV illumination. Right now scientists believe that this phenomenon, which is very light sensitive, allows scorpions to look for areas without light- a place to hide! Nephila pilipes ♀ by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThis is a common Golden silk orb-weaver. I was lucky enough to observe the mating process between two golden orb web spiders. Note the huge size difference between the male (smaller) and female. The male is seen on the underside of the female, using its specialized, swollen palp to fertilise the female. The male one will usually give the female one a back massage to calm the female before proceed to mating. Macracantha arcuata ♀ by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThis is undoubtedly one of the most bizarre and beautiful looking spider. She possesses two long protruding abdominal spines. The spines are long, heavy and unwieldy. However, the function of the spines are left unknown. There are several colour morphs, ranging from white to red for this particular species. Carrhotus sp. by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrFound this shy Double-striped Carrhotus wondering around at my school campus. This particular spider can jump further than most of the jumping spiders do. Coccinellidae by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrLadybugs aren't really bugs at all, they're beetles! The "lady" in ladybug refers to the Virgin Mary. Legend has it that crops in Europe during the Middle Ages were plagued by pests, so the farmers began praying to the Blessed Lady, the Virgin Mary. Soon, the farmers started seeing ladybugs in their fields, and the crops were miraculously saved from the pests. They associated their good fortune with the black and red beetles, and so began calling them lady beetles. In Germany, these insects go by the name Marienkafer, which means Mary beetles. The 7-spotted lady beetle is believed to be the first named for the Virgin Mary; the red color represents her cloak, and the black spots represent her sorrows. Rhomphaea sp. ♂ by Soo Yeak Choo, on FlickrThis is a boomerang spider that possesses a long and curvy "tail". Can be often found hanging on the bottom-side of leaves. They do not really need to spin a lot of webs to catch their preys. |
