Like the other two thread started for my own purposes. I also need to ask this - between cycling and jogging - which is better?

I was given a pretty expensive bicycle by my cousin bro who bought a new one. My friends came around and say the bicycle that was given to me is worth ~RM3k or more, so I assume it's a good bike.

Sometimes, when I think about how my feet hurts from running, how people say it's bad for the knees, how our feet pound the ground carrying our body weight is bad for us. Is cycling really better? My group of friends cycle around Klang town like crazy, going from one housing area to another.

I know it's not those hardcore endurance training but as a cardio exercise, I think it's pretty good. I dont know how they measure but they go for ~50km every time they set out for cycling - 3 of them.

Between cycling and jogging - quite sure jogging burns more calories than having seating on our butt on a bicycle seat. But is it suitable for me who is 107kg, would jogging be bad for my feet / legs?

Please note that this thread is also for myself. 191cm, 107kg ~ obese state. At my state, am I even suitable for running?

164cm at 85kg here
Im using cycling machine
as long as sweating should be ok
*
Dont have a cycling machine... Anyway, I wanna lose weight fast, more within the next 1 - 2 months time. Then gradually for the rest of the year and finally maintain what I've achieved.

QUOTE(LYFfan @ Jun 26 2006, 12:06 PM)
Brisk walk is better for your knees. It is said that Jogging puts 3 times your weight on one knee every time you step down, imagine, if you're 107 kg thats 300 over kg on one knee, as due to gravity and your mass. So brisk walk, don't jog.

If you have an uphill  gradient its an even better cardio workout.
*
Yes yes... that's what my gf's father advised too. Brisk walking, speed walking is better, less pressure.

QUOTE(malaysianPotato @ Jun 26 2006, 12:11 PM)
right, if you're worried about your knees walk. not sure if cycling is better than jogging but after recovering from a knee injury my orthopedist said not to cycle but jogging and running would be fine.
*
Huh? Recovering from knee injury, jogging is BETTER than cycling? You sure you heard right? Maybe it's because when you paddle up, your knees bend too much, that's why?

QUOTE(cubex @ Jun 26 2006, 12:12 PM)
maybe jogging once in a while?
coz i feel really good when jogging
or you can try nike shox? i dont know if good for knee or not but i feel good wearing it
*
Once in a while is pointless man. I wanna lose weight so I jog / run / walk / crawl to my girlfriend house. From Tmn Chi Liung, all the way to Tmn Eng Ann in Klang. If you know how far is that... It probably might shocked you.

My height is 191cm
My weight is 106kg
My shoe size is 11
My pants size is 38.

I intent to lose max 20kg overall.
Buff up - convert fats to muscles

In these 2 months, my realistic target is 99kg, 2 digit instead of 3. I know it's unhealthy so lose so much in so short period. No choice. Want to be able to fit in 38 loosely, currently is ngam ngam.

Update:
I just went for a walk / jog / tracking. From Klang Hosp towards the Reservoir, thru the jungle, towards Taman Rakyat, Andalas. Half way through the jungle.

Walk all the way up the reservoir, make a turn at the end, half way down, go thru jungle, got lost inside for 30 minutes. Too tired, heart about to give way, legs are sore, mosquitoes bite.

Met an old granny, asked her for directions to main road, Jln Banting. She led me out to the reservoir there where there's a lot of ppl walking up and down, she sped off - probably think I'm a robber. I didnt even get to thank her, I am shocked she is 70 runs faster than me. I'm humiliated. Now I'm thinking about suicide.

Got back home, shouted for my sister to open the door. Collapsed on the floor, breathing heavily, cold floor is good, drank tons of ice water. KO-ed. Now online forum to reply my own thread.

I am feeling pathetic and am not getting married.

lol cheer up, it takes time. just keep working out and you'll start feeling better in a couple of weeks.

its important to be aware that your weight may not drop very quickly and you wont go down sizes instantly either, but atleast you'll feel stronger after each week.
*
Lol... I am trying to think positive here. I want to look and feel better, for myself or my gf. Feel better in a couple of weeks eh? I am trying to do this everyday. Even got my best friend to accompany me tomorrow in case I get lost again.

Surprisingly, my weight drops faster than normal. I will keep this thread alive or start another one regarding my diet / workout plans which I am going through everyday.

QUOTE(Aurora @ Jun 26 2006, 07:27 PM)
cycling is bad for male reproductive system. Imagine 107kg sitting on it, erm, not exactly sitting, but with those thigh(assuming excess fat) rubbing on it, it's torturing for your swimmer. Even the best saddle still have risk on it. Jogging hurts your knee. Go swimming. The best calories burner, and you dont actually sweat in the pool. You'll feel warm all over your body after swimming. Then go sauna, 15 mins, it will start burning those fat. Enough to get you down by 4-5kg after that a single exercise. But that is just dehydration, plenty of water loss, and fat burned. Rather than feeling flabby on ur stomach, you feel tone all over your body, chest, back, arms, legs, waist. Jogging and cycling are carb burner, won't really burn those fat. And you only tone ur legs, and partly waist, not arms or body. especially that piece of fat below ur armpit, if you have any.

If you can maintain for 3-4 times a week for the next 2 months, you wont be doing it for losing weight, but rather enjoying it.
*
Good theory, bad for the male reproductive system. But I dont feel my thighs are all that close. I may be 107kg, you probably imagine me looking like a pig but I dont look all that fat. All the girls around me thinks I'm looking damn nice but down under those shirt, it's just fats.

Anyway, I dont have fat thighs. In fact, I have nicer legs than most women does. Somehow, genetically, I am hairless. Women thinks I shave but I dont. 9 out of 10 women who see me in my shorts will come molest my legs, the other 1 has never seen me in shorts. From what you read, you can tell I'm damn proud of them and yes I am.

Oh yea, I am looking into swimming. Just found out from my gf's friend that swimming in Shah Alam public pool requires a RM3 payment. She got all hyped up after my questions and wants to go with me but my gf wont allow it. Lolx.

QUOTE(malaysianPotato @ Jun 26 2006, 07:50 PM)
ummm, you do sweat while swimming you just dont notice it because you're in a pool of water. ask a doctor if you dont believe me but you do sweat while swimming.

you lose water in the sauna, not fat.

you will lose weight all around your body when you jog or run or whatever it is you do, you just happen to have a more complete workout when you swim.
*
Swimming is a more complete work out? Some people would argue that swimming does not burn fat as the water carries your weight. Thus, the exercise you do, swimming does not burn much fats since you dont carry your own weight like jogging. Even cycling, sitting on our butts, does not burn as much weight as jogging.

Since I cant jog for shit. Dont have the stamina. So between brisk walking / cycling / swimming - which will burn more calories? I may be overweight but I can do 20 laps in Shah Alam Club (not public pool) just last month.

I think I'll be dead by the roadside if I walk as much as you. Partly because I'm a smoker...  tongue.gif
*
I smoke some times, when there's an occassion. Well, if you think smoking is giving you so much trouble, quit it. My girlfriend was a heavy smoker, Avril Lavigne kind of girl. She quit because she love me and now she's swimming much more than I do, walking faster than I do! If she can, you can.

i found that losing fat comes in stages, first you put on weight when you start exercising which is water, then you lose a little bit of weight, which is some fat, then you put on weight again which is muscle growth, then you lose quite a bit of weight which is fat.

then you have to increase either amount or resistance and do it all over again.

iirc the biggest cause of testy/prostate issues are from the bycicle seat pressuring your "sai lou" and sweat build up, not too sure, hate cycling cant be bothered to find out.

haha hairless legs.

when you swim you're propelling your body through a dense material, your body has to work harder. its also good for those with injuries as there is minimal stress on your joints and virtually no impact-unless you bump into the pool wall, then gg.

not sure how much calories you burn when swimming but i dont burn all that much when running. i find swimming 10km is a hell of alot harder than running 10km is so i suppose swimming would burn more calories?
*
Yea... guess you're right. Actually, I dont mind if my kilos add somemore provided that it's muscles and not fat. Look fit and healthy, not fat and lazy.

Bicycle will really bring that bad health effect on the penis or not? I'm not sure but I just bought a pump for my bike today. I will be doing cycling soon.

Yea, hairless leg indeed. Nicknamed 'pak cham kai' back when I was younger. On the contrary to your thoughts, I find swimming easier than running. Running puts a lot of burden (weights) on my legs. Swimming is less cause the water support our weight. Of course, I dont intend to swim 10kg.

We cant calculate distance of swimming against distance of running but if I have two hours to spare for working out, I'd go with swimming. 20 laps - 30 laps is not as painful for me as running or tracking the jungle for 2 hours.

QUOTE(lord @ Jun 27 2006, 02:43 PM)
erm...wht abt rope jumping??
*
Thought about that but since I'm too tall, I dont think there's any skipping rope for me. Neither do I want to get entangled, fall and break my nose.

QUOTE(pizzaboy @ Jun 27 2006, 02:57 PM)
Rope jumping is good. I think it's even good for your knees, as I've read on bodybuilding.com
Still, it doesn't make too much sense to me. I'll skip, if I wanna get to sweat quickly. Maybe if I'm 30 minutes away from an appointment, and I can jog, so I quickly skip, and bathe and run out.

But about swimming, about the myth that the water carries your weight, think again.

Now, run 50 meters, at your maximum capability.

Do 1 LAP, 50 meters, freestyle or butterfly at your maximum capability too.

At the end, you'll probabbly be panting your breath out. Does running make you pant harder than swimming? I don't think sooo.....anyway I do run, before training that is. Apart from that, nah, I hate running.
*
I wont compare the distance but rather the time spent. You may swim a shorter length but equally amount of time with max effort. I think swimming is good, less pressure on the body.

Plus, swimming in the sea (weekend trips or holidays) is something enjoyable for me. To me, that's as close as being on another world, in the water or the sea alike.

holy mama are you an asian????
191 cm, any way jogging is the best way to lose weight.. my pesonal traineer told me...
*
Errr... yea, pure chinese. Jogging is the best way to lose weight, many people tell me too but I cant do it on a long basis, too much impact for my knees. I dont want to go thin today and sacrifice my knee caps for future pains.

QUOTE(afosz @ Jul 1 2006, 11:18 PM)
it is based on your self esteem..

both cycling and jogging is good but work for diet within 1~2 months??seems quite hard to achieve..at what weight you're aiming??

anyway 191cm??damn tall man..basketball player??i'm 181cm 65kg(max) and having a hard time to increase my weight sweat.gif
*
Was a basketball player but not anymore. 181cm and only 65kg?! My goodness, isnt that aneroxic?!

I am aiming for 90kg, changing from fats to muscles. Right now, I am aiming for two-digit weights, like 99kg. I havent start on a regular workout program yet. I just lift some weights everytime I enter my room. It's probably stupid but everytime I go downstairs to get a drink and return, I will train my biceps. Or even if I step out to the toilet, I will come in and do some bench press, etc.

QUOTE(t0p_man @ Jul 3 2006, 09:51 AM)
Actually, you can't do direct comparison between cycling & jogging. Both activities have different pros and cons and target different parts of the body. So, to balance yourself, it is best to do combination of swimming, cycling and running , aka thriatlon.

As a marathon runner, I advise you to start from the basic. Start with weight trainning, especially around thighs and calves muscles. Next, learn proper breathing through yoga. And next, learn proper way of running. Many people forget about this. You learn how to swim and drive on the road, but do not learn how to run. This is the major cause of injury. Have proper running equipment , such as running vest, short pant and running shoes.
*
Yoga for breathing properly? Running properly? Mind if you share a tip or two? I wont sign up for yoga classes purposely for breathing lessons so I can resume my running workout. HOpe you're able to help.

QUOTE(malaysianPotato @ Jul 3 2006, 11:24 AM)
... yoga?

while i agree with getting some amount of flexibility prior to getting into a full out run and proper breathing techniques are important... yoga?

learning to run is easy, most people in general get a proper form after 1-2 weeks of running on their own simply because their bodies begin to adjust for the added strain from running.

imo its much harder to learn how to jog properly.

shoes are important, but shorts and vest?
*
Jog properly is hard to learn? I cant stand the small pace and side stitch comes faster while jogging than running. At least when I feel side-stitch during running, when I look back, I know I've covered more tracks. Jogging is quite torture for me.

QUOTE(LYFfan @ Jul 3 2006, 11:29 AM)
Yeah I agree with previous poster. Cycling and Jogging or even swimming not mutually exclusive what. Each has its benefits, do one on MOnday the other on Tuesday and rotatelah. What's the problem?

But sauna does nothing but make u lose water, and occasionally inhibitions (if you are so inclined and go to the 'other ' sort of sauna)  whistling.gif

But I do enjoy a good sweat now and then. Opens your pores and whatnot right? Relaxinglah, like hot tubbing mah. But no real use for ppl who want to get healthy coz u lose water not fat.
*
Yea, I am rotating between cycling, swimming and cross-training now. Just that I dont have much time for it or sometimes too tired when I get back.

QUOTE(Empathy @ Jul 4 2006, 01:08 PM)
I've done lots of research on best exercises and many scientists and doctors agree that brisk walking is the best exercise to slim down and keep fit because it is addictive. FYI, I brisk walk about 3 times a week....around 50 minutes each time. I usually exercise at night...because very cooling and relaxing.
.
*
I have never tried exercising at night. My cousin recommend it too. Brisk walking is good for slimdown? I have to continue my workout then.

QUOTE(LYFfan @ Jul 4 2006, 01:54 PM)
Hmm, interesting. My elderly parents brisk walk for exercise, coz that really all they can do. But I think they would agree its quite addicting, they tell me they feel weird if they don't do their morning rounds. U may have something there. Or its the usual adrenaline junkie situation.
*
Same, my mother cant live without her morning walks too. One day she dont go, she starts making noise, waiting for tomorrow to come.

QUOTE(billytong @ Jul 5 2006, 12:33 PM)
Penny Bro, Try to do some sit up. Start from 25 to 50 to 75 to 100. It is very effective. Plus some other mini exercise, push up, jumping...

i lost about 3.5KGs after 1.5 months of exercising every weekend only.  smile.gif 168cm. <60KGs here smile.gif

Lately I revive my interest in cycling, I am so envy u got an expensive bike for free. sad.gif My 10 yrs old mountain bike sucks. I'm thinking to get a new one when I got enough money.
*
I cant do sit ups cause of my poor back. I have a lower back problem so instead of lift-ups, I do leg-lifts.

I do push up as well because sometimes I get bored of bench press at home, so I turn around and do push-ups to failure. Jumping, have not try that cause I scared it make me grow even taller.

My bike, I got it free cause my cousin used to use it to university in Aus. Now he dont use liao, so gave to me since he also lost interest in sports. My friend's bike goes up to RM20k. Damn bike can buy a Kancil liao.

By the way, people say that we shouldnt drink so much water before we sleep because it will cause water-retention, true or false?

Is there any way to remove water-retention, besides sauna?

Nonono... I wasnt talking about one go drink plenty of water but rather drinking water at night before we sleep causes water retention... true kah?

Is there any way to counter water retention? I know I drink more water than others do. At mamak, people order 1 cup, I order 2 cups. Maybe because my size is big, that's why I drink more?

Not a matter of thirst but I just have this usual habit of drinking a lot of water. My nutritionist friend say it will help me wash out rubbish from my system.

Now that you reminded me of diabetes... I need to check on this soon. Scary!

I just got back from swimming - 10 laps. Not much, not little. Covered in 1 hour+ a bit.

Shoulders are sore, chest sore, legs sore. Had cramps earlier cause forgot to warm-up. Going for cycling, to tapao my dinner.

Diet is torture. If I ever lose weight to ~90kg, I promise I will never grow fats EVER again.
