what does the "hull insurance" do?

There are 2 stores at RSI website, the pledge store and Voyager Direct. The pledge store is where you pledge for ships or purchase UEC (the in game credits) and it uses real currency. The Voyager Direct uses UEC to purchase in game items, like posters, buggy, guns, etc. Some of the stuff from Voyager Direct can be seen in the hanger module already after you purchase it

Hull insurance is like your car insurance. If you blow up your ship they will replace it (after a certain period of time). There's also other insurance for your cargo and modules. All the insurances can be purchased in game for a small amount of money.

Correct me if I'm wrong, players need to renew the account with in-game credits to continue playing the game

That would be wrong. You only need to purchase the game once. That's probably insurance that you're thinking of. See my post just before yours.

That is because they are releasing way too many packages now .

He/she is probably looking at the subscription package without reading the details .
The subscription actually give you access to extra add-on , you can still play the game without them

ah yes, the Centurion and Imperator subscription thingy. Well, the sub is more towards getting to know more information regarding the game than the rest of us plebs. You'd be given access to developer level artwork and the monthly digital magazine.

In game wise, you'd only be getting a decal. The subscription money also doesn't go into the pledge pool, it goes towards promoting the game via Wingman's Hanger and other publicity things, which is why ppl pledging for the subs are not getting much in terms of pledge rewards.
