Hi guys,

I am planning to buy a laptop

1. Preferred Brand:

Two models I am choosing

(a) Asus N550JV
(b) MSI GE40 20C

2. Budget:

Lower than RM4000

3. Usage

Simple Coding and light gaming like League of Legends and DotA 2.
Cannot play most of the 3D games due to 3D motion sickness.

4. Preferred laptop/screen size

14" inch above.

Thank you very much for your help. =D
*
FHD screen will give you more workspace when you code.
DotA 2 could use good discrete GPU if you turn up the details, especially in FHD screen.

N550JV-CN077H, i7-4700HQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte)@RM3799[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard

Among the 2, I think this will be a better choice. The IPS screen has better uniformity of colour and contrast over different viewing angle, should help your sensitive eye.

QUOTE(T0mmytky @ Jan 16 2014, 09:18 PM)

what's the different from the primary SSD drive from that primary/secondary mSATA SSD? or is it just additional hard disc?

*
RS-15 can fit in 1 SATA drive, and 2 mSATA drive.

Normally SSD in mSATA form factor from the same brand is very slightly more expensive than their SATA SSD of the same capacity.

There is no "disc" per se in SSD, it's all NAND smile.gif

QUOTE(QuekZai @ Jan 17 2014, 01:15 PM)
IThank you for your recommendation. However, the IPS screen is matte or glossy? I saw mostly in malaysia store it is glossy. I did see some of the other variants with matte screen but with no touch screen. The model is N550JV-DB71. I do not know what is the main differences. There are another models like N550JV-DB72T, N550JV-CN201H, N550JV-CM067H. Can you point out the differences for me?

Besides, I would like to change the HDD myself to a SSD. Is it possible? I heard the boss/manager from Meadow IT system told me. Asus laptop is specially coded that do not allow the Computer to use ssd drive. I never heard about it and doubt it very seriously since there is many people change the SSD by themselves.

Thank you very much for taking your time to help. I appreciate it a lot.
*
matte.

In Malaysia, there is only 1 N550JV.

Yes, you can. Bullshit from that guy.

Whether a laptop can last 3-5 years is depend on luck and your TLC as well.

That's gaming rig! XD
Maybe I need to revised the requirement a bit...

But still, no Ultrabook that have both HDD and bootable, regular size mSATA with good price?  blink.gif  I'm amazed.. They should at least build one.

I've even heard that mSATA starting to phased out with the new M2 (NGFF), not sure if that true.

Thin. Not too heavy. Have SATA and mSATA slot. IPS screen. Intel HD5200 is quite a ok IGPU.
Don't worry about m.2.
There aren't many m.2 card in retail yet, and more importantly most m.2 now is still stuck with SATA interface (m.2 SATA) rather than m.2 PCIe (which is the main point).
And unless you are dealing with very data intensive read / write transfer, SSD at SATA3 is quick enough for normal consumer (hey, most of the consumers in Malaysia haven't even heard about the gospel of SSD yet laugh.gif )

1. Preferred Brand: Any
2. Budget:RM3k, best if won't use up all the money
3. Usage: University courses, mostly for presentation I guess, and also some gaming like SA or COD
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Light and easy carry, screen size preferably don't be too small

Hi all...
I'm here to help my friend out to ask for a new laptop for his university course...
He's currently studying in UTAR in Civil Engineering course...
So I'm not sure if his course requires him to use any special function laptop...
He gave me a budget of RM3k and told me that it's best if the money is all used up...
So thanks all...biggrin.gif

CAD, 3D mapping probably are the more heavy duty software your friend will use.

Dell
Inspiron 14R, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) @RM2499[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Ubuntu 12.04 , 6 cell; W8SL@RM2699

Price are RSP, negotiable.
He can opt for the Linux spec and get legal cheap OS from school.
Use remaining budget to extend warranty to 3 years on site ~ RM300.
