QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Dec 1 2013, 07:46 PM) Haha, so so only la bro, still a lot to learn XD Can try using those foam wrapping that comes with LCDs and PC cases or laptops. And then curve it for even light coverage. The more diffused the light, the less reflective hotspots on the bugs. But to be frank, the photos improved a lot mainly because of the softbox you recommended. Although its quite big and gets in the way sometimes, I never shoot without it anymore haha Great beetle shot! I've yet to see this one haha~ Certain types of insects have rather reflective shells, including this one I lazy to do those la, since by the time I'm done, the setup is really cumbersome and gets in the way. Thinking of trying this out. ![]() QUOTE(Pro3363 @ Dec 2 2013, 12:33 AM) Macro shooters only talk about 105mm, ET & Raynox... What abt Nikon 40mm & 60mm? Working distance is one issue, most lenses below 90mm have to be very close to the subject to achieve 1:1. Besides, like TJ said, most photogs own a 50 prime already, so a 60 would only be a dedicated macro lens. WhileJust curious.. Cause the price of 60mm quite good... If not, i will consider tammy 90mm a 90/105 works as a dual purpose lens, for portraits as well as macro. Hence more useful. |

Just realized something while I was checking out the new cams at Nikon BTS today
The D5300 is the first Nikon DSLR to use a 3:2 aspect ratio screen like Canon. Photos show up fullscreen without black bars, makes even the FF 3.2 inch screens look tiny in comparison. ![]() |

QUOTE(coolkwc @ Dec 3 2013, 11:26 AM) So pro, i have feel questions need your help: Artificial lighting will always have a certain color cast (some lights are daylight balanced and work with daylight WB setting however), but we don't notice it because our brain compensates for this shift. However the camera does not do this and has to shift color balance away from normal to correct for this. 1. May i know should i use AWB for indoor shooting?? I don't know, i feel only the direct sun light can give me closest actual white balance most of the time, but not in restaurant lighting. Let say if at outdoor and fluorescent lighting indoor, direct sun light WB can give me accurate WB, why not inside the warm lighting? I just want my photo looks as natural as actual scene without too much WB correction. Carrying this theory to what you're doing, the daylight setting matches the color cast of sunlight, but not fluorescent lights (green cast) or tungsten lights (warm cast), plus the fact that fluorescent lights have many different variations in color temperature. So you'll see weird colors show if you continue using daylight balance indoors. Two ways to compensate for this: 1) For varied lighting, where you are moving from room to room under different kinds of lighting, best bet is to use AWB+RAW and fix the color balance in post. 2) For fixed lighting, where more or less you're not moving or every room is using the same kind of lights, You can preset WB using a white object (paper, wall, etc) This post has been edited by gunzerdude: Dec 3 2013, 12:45 PM |

QUOTE(copperwire93 @ Dec 3 2013, 01:37 PM) Like bro Gunzerdude, Nice one~ Past experience of me shooting an event in a hall, I use custom white balance by using white paper as standard measurement. Also used RAW+Jpeg mode. If the white balance fail, I can use the raw to recover the white balance, if the photo has alright white balance, than I stick to the JPEG. Too lazy to retouch every photos. For face stuff, I usually make use of radial filter or brush tool to balance the exposure. Not sure if it's right thing to do, but most of the time it works. Ate that fly already. QUOTE(coolkwc @ Dec 3 2013, 01:43 PM) Thanks bro. If you're shooting indoors, of course preset WB under the indoor lighting condition la, what for preset outdoors and then shoot indoors? For upcoming event is hold in a hall, so the lighting is same throughout the hall, and i compare with the hall used in last Sunday, the lighting also same kind of yellow cast. For solution 2: Let say i using white A4 paper, where should i shoot the white paper for preset WB? At the hall on spot or under sun light? Oh yeah, expodisc pretty darn expensive, I recommend this instead ![]() It's a white balance lens cap, dual purpose and around 10 bucks only. But I wouldn't recommend using any kind of stuff like this outdoors, since these tools (expodisc or white balance cap) only measure color temperature in close proximity settings, doesn't take into account varying temps in shade or in open areas. |

QUOTE(mingyuyu @ Dec 3 2013, 10:08 PM) arrr a canon guy asking in nikon thread paiseh Since when did you get a trumpet for your flash? a few of you might know that i love shooting macro, so recently after i saw a few of you post your diffuser for macro set up i decided to get one also. i bought this. ![]() now facepalm pulak, when i reverse my lens, the focusing distance drops until few cm from the bugs, the the octobox went so far until a lot further than my subject, causing the light unable to hit the subject correctly. also, i can't get softer light from that octobox, already opted for the largest in size but still the light appears quite harsh. On a more serious note, try attaching the diffuser cap first before fitting the softbox. |

QUOTE(mingyuyu @ Dec 3 2013, 11:34 PM) it looks really crazy haha, didn't thought it would that big when i bought it. i don't have the cap bundled with my flash Can get for 10 bucks at digicolor nia. Reason your lighting is harsh because all the power is still aiming towards the center of the softbox, you need secondary diffusion at the light source first to better distribute the spread of light. My softbox pula too short ![]() |

QUOTE(mingyuyu @ Dec 3 2013, 11:47 PM) i also bought that tiny octobox from digicolor, just today haha. need to buy the cap next time when i visit there. thanks a lot for the tips, i don't know diffusing the light is so complicated Quite simple only la once you start to understand the concept. now i can only shoot with the octobox using 70-200, that's they only lens that the octobox won't cover. For macro, the more layers of diffusion, the softer the light, but the more power required from the flash la. Oh yeah, you need to bring in the flash very close to the subject to maximize the benefits also. ![]() This post has been edited by gunzerdude: Dec 3 2013, 11:52 PM |

QUOTE(jepertine90 @ Dec 4 2013, 02:01 PM) Hi sifussss, Consider tamron 17-50 if you don't really need the OS on the sigma Sigma 17-50mm better or 35mm f1.8 better in a event such as comic fiesta 2013 in KLCC? because it is not full in-door nor full out door, not sure which lens to bring. Too lazy to bring both, just a simple setup with flash gun and shot. Just want to write blog about the event, not those apa apa photography page you normally see on fb that with superior lightning and such. But still quality photo is still the main factor. |

QUOTE(jepertine90 @ Dec 4 2013, 02:07 PM) nono, already have the sigma.. is my friend one, just not sure to tumpang that sigma or bring that 35mm.. Bring both la, the 35 isn't exactly all that big what is tamron 17-50 better than the sigma? because in future, may be after Chinese new year(angpao ftw) might get one of these lens. I love the kit 18-55 but the f3.5 and the sharpness is a bit let down when shooting in-door.. Performance on both the tamron and sigma are about the same. Except that the sigma has OS which will be useful for still subjects in low light. Up to you to decide whether it's worth paying extra to gain that capability la. |

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Dec 12 2013, 09:46 AM) Grats on purchase man, welcome to the gang Creative photo's owner is one of the most arrogant sellers I've ever dealt with in my life. Good luck if you choose to buy from him seriously. As for the 24-70, perhaps can ask Yannick or Creativephoto whether they have 2nd hand units to sell? |

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Dec 12 2013, 10:17 AM) Yeah, I agree haha One-shot deal involving small items can la, expensive stuff like lenses better not take the risk That's why I didn't bought my D800 and 24-70 from him after we met haha, went to Yannick instead But if its a one-shot deal, perhaps still okay? XD For me, I would definitely deal with Yannick la regardless of price haha, customer service is the most important He even helped me fix my Kenko ET which has gone haywire lol If price is an issue, there's always KL used camera and lenses also. Not a bad seller, willing to negotiate prices even when they're already quite low. |

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Dec 12 2013, 10:35 AM) Sometimes I really wonder how come the sellers can be like that, its exactly the same thing over at Mobile Computing I can only say from my own experience lah, even if the seller is neutral, doesn't really wanna talk much I'm fine with that. Many never realize that once you offer good customer service, regardless of whether its an expensive or cheap product, customers will definitely come back, leading to more business Simple as that, especially now that consumers are emphasizing more on customer service rather than price tags already But insulting me is another thing entirely. QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Dec 12 2013, 10:54 AM) Old story already la, you can read about it hereOf course, considering it's age, the seller might have changed for the better, or maybe not. I can only say good luck lah to those who wanna deal with him. |
