u mean the VR cannot always be ON? in which situation is good to on VR?

I tot its better VR always ON
*
When in high shutter speed like 1/500 or faster or when locked on a tripod. You may want to use VR even on a monopod. But I believe the newer generation knows how to detect when on a solid tripod because at times I forget to off mine and still did not notice any difference in the pics between VR off or VR on.

In sports, VR takes a few miliseconds to start up and stabilise before a shot can be taken. Most people switch it off as it can interfere with focusing speed. VR helps when you're doing panning and automatically detects if you're doing horizontal or vertical panning.

i still not used to AF-On leh. hw many of u all using AF-ON? i feel it a bit inconvinient since need 2 fingers to handle.

Speaking about VR and AF-On, it used to be that the VR motor is not activated when you focus with AF-On. I know this on the D300 and the D700. It is only activated when you half press the shutter button.

But on newer bodies like the D800, the VR motor is already activated when press the AF-On button. That's one of the new things implemented.

With regards to "slow" focus when using VR lens with VR on, the trick to make the VR motor always activated and ready to focus is to preempt the shot and keep pressing the AF-On button or half press the Shutter button a few times before taking the shot.

QUOTE(rlky @ Mar 24 2014, 12:35 AM)
I'm looking for 2 fast prime lenses to replace my zoom lens. I'm looking at 85mm and 28/35mm. For the 85mm I have decided on the Nikon 85mm f/1.8g.

However, for the wide angle lens I need recommendations. Currently it's either the 28mm f/1.8g or the 35mm f/1.8g FX. Based on reviews, the 35mm f/1.8g FX is quite underwhelming. I tried it and found that the vignetting at f/1.8 is pretty bad too. I have not tried the 28mm though. Any of you guys have personal experience with these lenses? If either is not recommended, what would you recommend?

FYI I mostly shoot at 20-35mm.

The 28mm f/1.8G and 35mm f/1.8G are newer lenses. Don't have experience on them nor have I been following them of late.

I do have experience with the 24mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 respectively. Both lenses sharp wide open. Beautiful bokeh. Acceptable vignette at wide open. Wonderful lenses especially the 24mm. No other manufacturer has made a lens quite like it. Wide angle and still have beautiful bokeh.

AF on those lenses are a little slow. That's the only down side. If you don't mind manual lenses, the Samyang 24mm f/1.4 is not bad.

get the sigma 35mm 1.4 Art. It's a holy beast.  rclxm9.gif  i think it's 2.5k.. 2 yr warranty rite?
35mm for me, has the best bokeh for a wide angle prime. compared to 28mm, which is quite wide for me, and has less bokeh since it's 1.8.
check the sigma lens first before buying.

Good price on the Sigma. It is indeed slightly sharper than the Nikon at wide open but the background bokeh wise, the Nikon is smoother while the Sigma bokeh a little edgy. Depends on what you're after lah. If I had to start again, I would have been very tempted with the Sigma. The Sigma was not available when I got my Nikon 35mm f/1.4.

ok guys.. need recommendation on UWA..
preferably around rm2k

dont mind buying 2nd hand or new

few lens come to my mind:
new nikon 18-35 f3.5-4.5 afs
tokina 16-28 f2.8
tokina 17-35 f3.5-4.5

nikon 16-35 is out of budget
also old nikon 18-35 afd not quite a match for my d600 (tested)
*
If you were using DX, I have the Sigma 10-20.

Anyway, have read that the Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 is quite good. Have not seen people using it. But if I'm not wrong, quite pricey and price is close to 2nd hand price of Nikon's 16-35mm f/4 VR.

One thing to note is that there is no standard filter for that Tokina. You need to use special filter holder like what is used on the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8.

edit: Need to add that you can get the Tokina in US for RM 1k less than local prices. No idea about HK.

do u know how much nikon 18-35 f3.5-4.5 afs? solution for the pricey 16-35mm f4 & 14-24mm f2.8..
*
There's no solution or substitution for 14-24mm f/2.8. Muahahah. tongue.gif

I'm not really sure, but based on my understanding, Lightroom and Photoshop requires some space to read and write data... so even if you have a blazing fast SSD but not much space in it, it'll still be slower than a HDD nod.gif
And there are also sayings that there's a limit to how much these storage drives can withstands the constant writing/reading  hmm.gif
*
SSDs can withstand quite high read write. Should not have to worry too much.

You don't constantly do photo editing 24/7 do you? biggrin.gif

sweat.gif If you have the space in your SSD, why not?

Please put important programs in your SSD. Prioritise them.
