A question here... do you think it's wise to purchase 'paypal' in LYP, and then use the paypal to buy stuffs online in UK, providing that the paypal is accepted by the online dealer?
*
yeah, paypal is more for ebay. If you like to make any online purchase, you can apply Natwest student's credit card. and you can do any transaction online.

Isn't sandwich programme and placement programme the same?
*
yup. Sandwich programme is known as Placement Programme. Which you are required to work in a company for 12 months. It's a good opportunity to gain working experience.

did you ask the repairer send the bills to your landlady instead of you? because usually landlord or landlady is responsible to all repairing bills. Probably try ask city council to help you. what i know, there should be have one service, helping student who having any renting problem.

Err... I think the Vietnames was also on direct-flight from Singapore to Manchester, which is longer distance compared to KLIA to London Heathrow.
Yup Yup Yup... many questions... luckily to have you all knowledgeable people here who can answer most of my questions...
*
No, direct flight means you don't need to transit at some place. from pervious post, what you said is "from Vietnam to Singapore to Manchester". It means that your Vietnamese friend will travel from Vietnam fly to singapore then from singapore fly to manchester. This mean your flight is not direct-flight. Direct-flight is where you straight away fly from KL to Manchester/heathrow. Beside, it's depends on where did you get the ticket... if you compare price from KL, Vietnam and UK, the price will be different also.. Am i right?

btw, 'sponsor ticket'? what that's mean?? blush.gif

when a JPA scholar embarks on his journey to study overseas, JPA will issue one way tickets for him and his family to his destination, and later one way tickets back after he has finished. these tickets are part of the sponsorship, so u dont have to pay one cent. JPA will pay MAS directly.

i dunno how true it is about JPA paying the marked up price to MAS, but i've been on a coupe of sponsored trips, and it is marked pretty high than market price.
*
ahh.. ok now i understand.
But last time I took MAS, the price is more or less same, RM3k++, which paid myself. wacko.gif

Just wondering. Any one taken the sandwich program before? If yes is it sufficient enough to cover for the forth year tuition fees? Roughly how much those undertaking the sandwich program would earn?
*
it's depends on the company. But usually it might be cover 70% (if you are lucky) of your 4th year tuition fees, don't expect it's going to pay all of your final year tuition fee. Anyway i know there's some university, that you will have risk that you can't get any offer for your sandwich year. this mean when you finish 2nd year, but you can't get any offer from a company. so you will need to straight away go for your final year.

I dont think that is possible unless he is not using any of the money he earned that year.

Like I have calculated, 17k is pretty reasonable for sandwich student, and after tax 12k would be just be enough to cover a year of Engineering course in most uni. but he does have to pay the accommodation and food/living fees for that sandwich year doesnt he?
not sure of the exact fee for that course with Uni of portsmouth, but make it £11k per annum for tuition fee, £7k per 10 months of living fee. that makes £18k per year * 3 years = you £54k for 3 years course. expect £57k including inflation.

as for sandwich year, some uni requires you to pay an amount of tuition fee for that year, usually 1/3 of your tuition fee.
*
well, some of company will pay for your public transport (like months bus-pass) and you rent for a very small room and cost you £250++ per month. like you calculated, £12k is your salary after tax, so estimate around £3.5k for your living cost (if your living is very very simple and economize) .. Just enough pay 70% of your engineering tuition fees (or probably 65%). tongue.gif

anyway usually money earned during placement is mostly pay for your final year's living cost, not really for your tuition fees.

Usually the deposit is paid upon arrival but now they want it before the offer can be made unconditional wow... What a way to commit somebody..
*
well, it's normal. As there's quite a lot student will attempt obtain a student visa but work in restaurants to earn money. So to prevent this, university will force student to pay £1k or £3k as deposit. this is to ensure you continue study in the university. Usually home office will only approve student visa when the university confirm you are enroll.

im heading to imperial college to to civil engineering (MEng) and have secured a full gamuda scholarship.

before going, what are the things i need to do? for example, apply for a passport, student visa, buy winter clothing, buy medical insurance, get a bank account, etc.
*
Yes, the most important thing is passport, student visa, unconditional letter from university, money, book accommodation and some dry food (if you brave enough to bring some)...

erm, winter clothing? now is summer time, you can come here and buy.. medical insurance? i don't think so, as normal medical treatment in uk is free for student. bank account? when you arrive, you can open a uk bank account.

I really afraid that my question would be out of topic, but please answer if can =).

Is nottingham a good place(environment and social living) to study? My friend who are also my classmate, confirmed going to Nottingham campus in Malaysia for the foundation and other 2 years and later to Nottingham uni in England to continue her MPharm Degree and minor musics after SPM (now we are only Form 4). Well, that was her father's decision and he claimed that it's one of the best universities for Pharmacy course. She is worried being alone and her parents couldn't come over to England to visit her as her brothers and sisters are still studying secondary (by that time). I can't come along because I have set UK for my postgraduate (if I am able to).

What do you guys think, is that place safe for her or you guys would like to suggest her to study her MPharm in Manchester? Any other suggestions?
*
well, like youngkies said, Nottingham is having the top 10 crime list. But don't worry, Nottingham University is far from black area. As long bring small amount cash with you, and hang around city center during day time, you will be alright. it's quite safe, although a lot ppl said nottingham is having very high crime percentage. Nottingham is just like KL, busy city, shopping mall, restaurants, pubs and cinema.. but again, you need to be careful and stay alert everytime you walking alone.

don't worry being alone, there's a lot gals are coming to uk and study by herself.... after quite some time, she will get knows new friends... when gals coming alone and study, this will train her be more independent and more tough. smile.gif

Beside, MPharm is a good option if you like to work in uk... as getting a secure job in pharmacy is more easier compare to others field. at least you will have less visa problem.. am i right youngkies?? lol...

For Manchester, there's crime happen either. crime happen every where, place like cambridge also has crime happen. As long you stay alert, and careful... you will be alright...

Concerning mobile phone packages, what would be considered a good deal? Lets say a 20 to 25 pounds per month package, what standard phone is bundled in, with how many free minutes, and how much free texts, ect.

Thanks in advance sempais biggrin.gif
*
it's depends on which network and what phone do you want. if your budget is £20-£25 per month, i guess you can get 200 min+100 text and a phone like nokia 6300. If you like a better deal and don't mind have trouble, you can go for cashback deal. sometimes you can get 12 months contract and 12 months cashback. this means you need to send your bill in certain month to the company and they will send a cheque to you. This is no guarantee that you will get the cheques, as long you follow all their requirements.. then you will get it. oh, my advice is go for big company like carphonewarehous and e2save.

something i would like to ask that in uk
for student rent house.. was it limited to 1 person 1 room?
or like malaysia..
2 person or 3 person per room also can?
*
student rent house you are referring is private renting? if yes, it's depends on the landlord/landlady.... they maybe set some rules like no party or you can't bring any friends to overnight. but some of them, don't mind as long you pay extra £10-£20 per day for your friend (if a short-term stay, like few days or weeks..). But usually, when you sign contract, they will make sure actual number of ppl. there's some rules for landlord, normal house for renting, the maximum ppl to stay in the house is not more than 4 ppl, if more than that, they need to apply a license for that. erm.. i not quite know about it.. i was told there's one rules for landlord.
there's 2 types of room for renting, one is single room (for one ppl) and double room (for couple or share with friend).. of coz the price is not the same...

Another question. Can an undergraduate/postgraduate student have a credit transfer to any UK universities from any local universities (private or gov) for 2nd or 3rd year?
*

QUOTE(ilovecookies92 @ Jul 28 2008, 04:02 PM)
I have another question that you guys have not answered yet, refer to post 2095. =D. Awaiting for the answer badly.
*
you mean transferring credit to UK university? for undergraduate, i assume you can but again it's depends on your course and which uni you are going to. as some uni have different system... you can directly email them. but for postgraduate, i not sure which postgraduate you are referring to, phd or master? So far, for phd, i never heard transfer credit to finish the degree before. for master, again, just like undergraduate, depends on the uni.

sense_less143, yes.. i agree with youngkie and Geminist. If you come alone and first time live in uk, university accommodation is the best option. unless you have friends/senior/relatives in uk, you can rent private house outside university. As there's a lot things you need to consider.... The most important is 'house viewing', as sometimes landlord/landlady won't display/tell you bad side/problem of the room. If i were you, i would say stay in university accommodation for the 1st year. then second year only rent private house outside university. At least 2nd year, you will have more clearer picture on how is UK and you will have more friends help you choosing private accommodation.

Can you recommend which uni in UK that is good for IT course ? Currently I'm taking Diploma in Internet Computing and my CGPA is 3.52. Do I eligible to apply for studying in UK ?
*
Uni for IT/computing? I would say University of Cambridge or University of Nottingham is the best.. If you have no problem with tuition fees, then i would say.. go for it.. hahaha... Usually qualification for university in UK is minimum second upper class (2.1) or second lower class (2.2). erm.. not sure how to calculate CGPA.

By the way, should we close this thread.. and open a new thread for Studying in UK? it's quite a lot post in this thread.. 2k-3k....

I couldn't believe it, my sister's visa application rejected twice and it's less than a month she will be flying to UK. First time they rejected because the money wasn't there, but the document for the loans and stuff are pretty much ready just waiting for the money to be transfered. Ok fine, now we got the money but this time they said the money is not in her bank account, and it is in my father's bank account. WTF is this man.
*
did your father write a letter state that all his money will support your sis's tuition fees and living cost? sometime thing that you fill in your application and evidence need to same. make sure your evidence need to put it in black and white.

but i think if you don't have 100k, i think you can use your father's pay slip to show that your father will transfer some money every month to you.
