Read this in the Star today.

"In Kuala Lumpur, a Malaysia Airlines flight to London took off as scheduled despite the heightened security.

MAS senior general manager of communications Indira Nair said MH004 left KLIA as scheduled at noon yesterday.

"Our flights in and out of London are operating as per schedule."

She said due to the stringent security screening, "all passengers are requested to report early for check-in to minimise flight delays."

She said MAS would also implement a new cabin baggage security measure for passengers from Heathrow airport.

The measure was introduced by the British Transport Department.

Under the new rules, passengers are only allowed to carry one plastic transparent carrier bag per person with minimal and essential belongings onboard. All other baggage will have to be checked in.

Meanwhile, an MAB official said there would be no change to the cabin baggage rule at KLIA.

"Passengers will still be allowed to carry their hand luggage on board."

Phew! Hope this dude is right. rclxms.gif

Should i buy my labtop in Malaysia or buy it in Uk? as u know that after the incident of 11/8, i afraid labtop, psp all these stuff would be prohibited aboard into the plane..and is it cheaper and i will able to get a lastest labtop in Uk? by the way, how much XBOX360 sell in Uk? i am going to portsmouth, anyone there can give me some advice? thx a lot

Well, that's a valid dilemma. If following current scenario I will get it over there, coz I can't imagine checking in my laptop. Sure hancur berkecai when get there. Whatever extra expenses incurred when buying over there, should be worth it to cover the potential damage.
However, I got mine a month ago oredi, so now pening la cry.gif

Get it in Malaysia if possible, since some of the lappies here in the UK are slightly more expensive compared to in Malaysia.

-Edit: Forgotten to mention, you can save the cash in Malaysia and buy a set of suit here (you'll need it, either now or later) in a shop called George. It is a subsidiary of ASDA and believe it or not, I got my self 2 shirts + 2 tie + 1 jacket + 2 slacks for 40GBP = RM280 and the quality is very good as well, just that it's not branded stuff, that's all :)
*
That's great news. Was just thinking about getting a suit done here. thanks for the heads up! thumbup.gif

Yeap that's true also, however, I remember you can get your baggage insured at the airport? I used to wrap my stuff (ext hdd) in bubble wrap and put it in between clothes before checking in my baggage.

I'm not really sure about the insurance so you might have to check it. Sorry
*
That's true, but bubble wrapping my laptop? Don't know how much that's gonna help. But then will need to try it if situation does not improve.

Just read this on bbc.co.uk SOunds good!!

Precautionary measure

Long-term changes to airport security checks outlined by Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander include the following:

#
Passengers can choose what to take on to a plane, but any form of liquid, fluid, lotion or gel will be banned. Electronic devices, such as laptops, will be permitted but will be thoroughly screened. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

#
A medium-sized item of hand luggage will be permitted. This bag will be around half the size of luggage previously admitted.

#
Searches of passengers and their clothing will be conducted more frequently and are to be carried out by hand or using body scanners.

I got mine at Leeds. They are still having a discount now so you can check it out if you have the time, they have some pretty decent clothing there and if you wanna save some bucks on clothing, you can try there (or Primark).

http://www.george.com/company/

For those who are going to UK, you can save some money on winter cloth since there'll be quite a lot of sales later and also, you can spot for some cheap deals at shops mentioned above.
*
Checked out the site, really great deals even for duvet and pillowcase sets.
But seems to not have outlets in Central London. I'll be staying around UCL area. The nearest is at Clapham Junction 7.6km away!!!
I noticed from your earlier profile you're from Baker Street, London, so where do you go for the nearest George store?

I get HSBC international student account 3 years ago and now have change to standard account..

If got chance, pls do so get the Lloyds bank.. They give VISA debit card for me and it's very useful compare with those solo card... I can do lots of stuff on VISA but not on SOLO.. but better dun get those cash card.. even worse..

Internet banking... I heard natwest charge when dealing in internet banking on natwest.. crazy.. I use HSBC internet banking and it's quite easy ... Lloyds also not bad...

Phone contract.. get O2 contract.. so you can use the free minutes to call back Malaysia landlines or mobile phones for free..  Da number ?

0844 570 0474

You will heard a gal talk blah blah blah.. when she start talking, you jus press the international code then ur destination number...
eg : to call 04 - 1234567

006041234567

simple.. wink.gif
*
So only Llyods gives a Visa debit card? Heard that Barclays gives a credit card but must minimum balance of GBP500 or something shocking.gif shocking.gif
BUt I thot you can only open one students account. So the other banks you applied. are they normal or stuednts acc? But since you're already there for 3 years, easy for you loh.
BTW, were you charged monthly for your HSBC int students acc?

THe O2 contract you're talking about, why are there "special" numbers to call? You mean O2 will not tell you these numbers and you have to search yourself? SOunds like very hush hush only blink.gif

Sorry noob question again.
What's the diff between all these cards you guys are mentioning? Switch, Solo, credit card?
All banks offer them or only selected ones? Which has wider coverage and acceptance?

Thanks

mine is international students account.. they havent charge me a single penny since october 2005  rclxub.gif .. i can open my account straightaway last year.. maybe there are hidden rules difference between branches..
*
Which branch did you open your acc with? I'm going to UCL. Any recommended branches nearby?
More keen on HSBC, coz the other banks (Natwest etc) require you to be resident in the UK for 3 years or more to open a students acc and I don't see anything on it;s website about an interantional acc.
Maybe can switch banks after a year, if they're really sucking me of GBP5 every month!

@mr lappy,

Now 0870/0844 all same. Just use 0844 to call weekdays and weekends as well. If you use public phones, just use 0844 because it's more cheaper.. 0870 charges more..

@overboard,

New man utd won't so cheap.. Over 30 Pounds a bit more.. hehe.

@jooku1

Last time when i wana join Barclays, they wan to deposit 1000 Pounds. Less than that need 2 pay 5 Pounds per month. When I'm using HSBC international student, I do not charge any in any month. I have to ask my brother since he just open an HSBC international account last 2 months. Let u know later..

About O2, if you get some UK Chinese newpapers, they offering a lots of telephone numbers to call back Malaysia, China for free using the free minutes on O2 or pay little money on public phones.. So O2 won't introduce this, benefits for us and tell Vodafone to say bye bye to them. lol.. Orange network seem also can call but still yet to be confirm ... Better stick with O2..

Phone bills, better deal with Direct Debit.. if not have to pay extra administration charges.. Charge here charge there.. Expensive nia...

Thanks man, appreciate your help. Can you also ask him how long it took and whether he applied for it online from Malaysia or when he got there? notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Again, what's all the big fuss over HSBC? I opened a current account with HSBC UK with no problem. In fact, I have several accounts with them. No £5 monthly charges whatsoever.

(unquotejooku1)

You need to do it instore. An O2 contract done online does not qualify for inclusive 08xx calls (unless they have changed it since I last checked). By right, you need to have been a resident of the UK for a minimum of 3 years before you can even have a contract line.
*
I meant the HSBC account actually blush.gif When you applied for yours, was it a students/international students/basic account? Coz it specifies that there's a GBP5 payment per month for the international one. And there's option of applying online.

So you would suggest I wait til I get to the UK, and walk in to any HSBC branch and just apply, without any intro letter from HSBC Malaysia? Probably you banked in a large sum, that's why they didn't ask questions or charge you.

I was asking about the HSBC account actually, not the O2 contract. Sorry if I misphrased my question blush.gif

Well, I had a discount because I'm from INTI so my fees and halls of residence both cost 8800 GBP per year.

Minus the accommodation, 3000GBP per year for living expenses is more than enough and you will have quite a bit of spare cash to go for trips as well. Don't forget you can work part time too, earning around 30 - 50 GBP per week, so basically, you'll have quite a bit of cash to spare if you spend wisely smile.gif

*PS, I did Mechanical Engineering.
*
Would this apply to Central London as well? DOubt it.
My weekly rental at Langton Close (self catered flat) is already GBP104.95, which works out to GBP454/month and GBP4000+ from Oct to July. shocking.gif My monthly allowance from JPA only GBP550, so have to fall back on my monthly salary to live properly cry.gif
Fees thank God covered by them otherwise die sweat.gif

tommy141184 : Heard from my frens that the rice cookers over there not as heavy duty as ours here. Just need to get a basic small one. DOn't think will take up much space gua.

Mostly this will work during the night.. so b4 you work, u got one meal to eat, then after finish work get another meal.. This depends on the boss ...

I usually work on the chinese take away shop.. so get one meal b4 working ( b4 5pm ) and get another one after work. ( 12 midnite - u can save it for breakfast the next day.. ) Wee!!!

This is the part time job... Free meal lo... save ur money to buy and save ur time to do da meal.. how about that?? Dun say you are poor student, even rich student also da same.. We all lazy to cook and hard to cook yummy food..

wah.. watching movie in UK cinema is very expensive... so try watch in Malaysia puas puas.. One person is 6 pounds +-.. but I know every wednesday if u use Orange Network can get buy 1 get 1 free ticket promotion..

Yup.. aim your target first.. The Aim is too study and get good score at there.. Not getting jobs... That's just part time job after you have feeling study time is alrite wit you.. I had a hard time but now i have graduated and happy about my result. Of course I can't get First Class Honors for my degree but at least i can cope myself surviving in the UK..

If you wan to work like Chinese restaurant, try to speak english and cantonese more fluently.. Mandarin is second... Most boss are from Hong Kong and they speak Cantonese than Mandarin  or English.. English is when you chat with the customer.. So .. jus give u some hint for that.. But  for me I won't do those waiter job... Very tired ... Each night can earn from 20 - 35 pounds depends on location and the business.. Work 4 days you can earn 100 Pounds and this is enough for weekly expenses..
*
Then what did you do? Washing plates?

We've discussed about laptops, now want to ask about printers. Think it's a necessity in addition to the lappie, as we have theses to print and stuff. I imagine printing costs are pretty high in the UK.
How much does a decent inkjet and refills cost there? 3rd party refills available? Don't think can lug one from over here.
