So I guess it's still cheaper to buy here and post over there, than to go buy there.

Yup, checked the prices. So much more expensive in the UK cry.gif But if you add in the posting charges, will probably come up to the same. Sigh.... dilemma.

What did you guys do?

About the Banking stuff, actually if i open a account... let's say in Llyonds bank.
Their student account is consider as saving account or not  blush.gif ? and usually their interest is calculating monthly or yearly? a bit blur in this  rclxub.gif , or we can choose one? i plan to apply cause if lucky got a free ipod also  thumbup.gif

How about this bank is it ok, will they have a lot of charges? like HSBC.. request for balance also CHARGE!!  mad.gif
*
That's for students account. You have to be resident in UK for at least 3 years to qualify unfortunately sad.gif
But of course with a big enough bank draft, doors will magically open rolleyes.gif

Yup Dell offers international limited warranty for 3 years if you take their full-blown 3 year complete care package. But to take advantage of their full service (not limited) you'll have to be in Malaysia.
HP on the other hand gives 1st year international warranty, with option for extension for another 2 years at a fee. The caveat is, that the extra 2 years are only valid locally (Malaysia). For international coverage you have to purchase a care pack from the country you're going to within 90 days from purchase date of laptop.

Hopes this clears up the confusion.

BTW, my bro who is training with MAS, says that on UK flights, only ONE hand carry is allowed (with strict adherence to required dimensions). So if you bring your laptop on board you can't bring a second bag (unlike previously). Just stuff all your stuff into the laptop bag, I guess.

isit true that to go to UK , ur only allowed things that can be seen thru a transparent bag?  im afraid that this UK Bombing thing will go on for ages , so now i have phobia flying to UK since they have many enemies after the iraq thing ( i guess ? ) ....
*
AS per my post above, they've relaxed the ruling somewhat. Laptops are allowed, but need to be removed from bag and placed thru scanner at the checkpoint. Also no need for transparent bags, just ONE cabin bag that conforms to approved dimensions.
However, ban on liquids remain.

ok. good to hear bout the laptop ruling.
one cabin bag with approved dimensions? mind to elaborate more on that?

*havent been updating myself with the news lately n forum seem to b my source of news tongue.gif, excuse my lazy-ness*
*
Well, if you notice at the airport, near the check in counters there's this metal structure where you can put your bag in to see if it fits in it. Anything that fits in this structure will be allowed on board, anything jutting out will not be allowed.

They sometimes have this structure at luggage selling stores. Just to make sure before you buy thumbup.gif

dreamer101 : Well that's why I'm thankful I can carry on my flimsier Compaq (according to your list la biggrin.gif ). It will be trashed in the cargo hold.

Oh cmon, nobody care about those rules.

My baggage exceed those dimensions all the time and nobody check. Just make sure your luggage is not that big until you cannot fit inside the overhead compartment and they also said the max weight allowed is 7kg but mine is always like 15-18kg. I have flown many times like that without any problems on MAS, SQ and Emirates.

Emirates is also to be very lenient on excess baggage for students. One of my friends actually checked in 38kg of baggage.
*
That maybe true previously. But as of late (my brother's freind just travelled last week) they are very strict with it.

Wouldn't want to panic and repack on the spot when they really don't allow.

But like goliath said, you don't really need a huge carry on, as long can fit your lappie and valuables.

i lost my final acceptance letter, is the final acceptance letter importance? i heard that we need to show it to the unvirsity when we arrive in the uni there to clarify we have paid..is that true? the payment receipt is still with me...is it okay? the final acceptance letter was lost during the period processing my visa. i noticed it was lost when i got my passport with visa back, and i asked my agent what had happen ( because the visa i went thru agent) then they told me it was lost in the british embassy and it is okay without it..but i still have a bit worry..
*
You may ahve some problem at immigration in the UK, coz they'd probably ask to see your unconditional offer regardless of whether you have a visa or not.
Since it's the British High Commission's fault, it's safer if they can issue a memo/letter saying that they lost the letter.
Also you can ask your university to resend you another copy.

i still keep my receipt of payment and offers letter, there are three letters, one is unconditional letter and one if conditional letter and the others one is final acceptance, the british embassy only lost my final acceptance letter, so is it okay with the remaining letters?
*
Depends on what further conditions you had to fulfil to get the final acceptance. If it's something to do with financing your course or English Language requirement, then it will be an issue if you don't have the final letter.
But any reasons other than that, it should be ok if you only have your unconditional offer letter.

Any comments azarimy?

Anybody did their visa recently? I need to renew mine.

How long did they take to process it and for you to get your visa?

Is the cost now really rm600+?
*
Did mine 3 weeks ago at VFS.
Fee RM578 payable to British High Commission plus RM50 payable to VFS Sdn Bhd.

Took 2 days only to process my application. Check out VFS-UK

i dunno what's wif NX2d card.
You're referring to the NX2 card, issued by the National Express (think Transnasional etc, but with up to date and clean and on-time coaches). It gives you up to 33% discount on the National Express coaches. It has nothing to do with your university.

Personally I just use my Young Person's Railcard and move around by train.
*
But it'll be a lot cheaper by bus right?

how about other airlines  icon_question.gif ? last time i heard all the airlines implement the same rule after the terroist incident. All of them only allow ONE hand luggage with max dimension not more than 45x35x16. if u carry your laptop bag that also consider as one already so u are not allowed to bring any other hand luggage. blink.gif

So is the information that i obtain is wrong or they have loosen the rule already?
Or the luggage allowance that scilent scream stated one ONLY apply to SIA? other airlines cannot do like that ka  shocking.gif ?
*
Heard the same from my bro's friend who just flew there 2 weeks ago. Only ONE hand carry INCLUDING laptop bag. But this is only for MAS, don't know about other airline. Must call up and check.

Yup, one of my friend did it already by MAS. Good thing happened on him. His luggage is 25KG but the officer did not charge him drool.gif . Beside, he carried one printer (with a container but the container weight 5KG la, so u know what is inside) on his hand with another bag. So the total weight he can carry is a lot more that other ppl can carry lo.  flex.gif
*
Yeah you're right. My friends who left last night were taking 25kg and 29kg respectively. No problems, but must smile like mad la biggrin.gif to the officer.
Leaving tonight, wish me luck guys.

natwest's step account and a savings account. my wife's using hsbc.

quite comparable laa the two. but lately natwest has been promoting lots of free goodies for students. not sure if applicable to international students or not.
*
unfortunately international students usually are not...
some universities also have special "tie-in agreements" with certain banks...for eg. UCL has an agreement with Barclays, where reps from the bank will be present during orientation week to sign up students. I tried opening the Step Account with natwest u mentioned, but UCL were "unable" to provide certain documentation that Natwest required. "We only provide what Barclays requires" that's what the registrar office told me.
Whereas I think LSE ties in with Natwest...
So depends....
