Hi Everyone. One of my friend is working in Dell and she told me that recently got a Raya promotion in a so called "Dell Employee Purchase Program".

My friend told me that every employee only limited to 3 laptop purchase in this "special price". She is thinking of make some pocket money in here instead of wasted the nice offer. Like take a bit "commission" from buyer once the deal is closed with DELL.

if that's the case, i will just opt for a new unit. modifying until that extent is never my intention. i still prefer to change parts within the limits of the machine.
*
I don't think you need to "modify" the power brick. Is was like buying a 240watt power brick. Remove the middle pin of the power brick if throttle is happened. I think M17x motherboard is capable of receiving more than 200watt of power. so, just change it will do. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Jul 7 2014, 11:46 AM)
all models with top cards come with 240W power bricks. yes 240W should be fine for m17x/17. but what if the upcoming gpu needs more power than that? i am talking about 330W power brick mod. (like what 18 has) it involves putting the id chip from 240w into 330w brick. (to trick the machine into using the modded brick as power source)

looking at the trends, power consumption should be reduced in every cycle of new releases, and it's likely not a problem. however no one knows for sure.
*
My M15x comes with 150watt and the motherboard default will limit the input power with 150watt.

I am currently using AMD 7970M + 740QM which is still ok for 150 watt.

But I am planing to upgrade my processor to 940XM. I already do a lot of studies in internet when planing to upgrade that. when it comes to that CPU, I'll need a 240 watt power brick. but one problem is motherboard will not accept more than 150 watt unless we removed the middle pin of the power brick. motherboard can draw up to 230 watt base on techinferno.com and notebookreview.

I note sure about the putting the id chip. the middle pin of the power adapter is "id pin", just remove it and the so called "trick" will be done. A lot of people already doing that in M15x.

So, I guess you no need to worry about that if M17x motherboard is limit the input power not more than 240w.

The only one drawback is you can't charge the battery once you remove the middle pin. tongue.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Jul 7 2014, 12:19 PM)
that's the same trick. the thing with these electronics is that although it works flawlessly, you cannot be sure how long it can withstand the modified power source. (like previously some lyp sales people telling everyone that laptop ram with 1.5v rating worked for haswell laptops)
Erm... I have different thought about this.
Electronic device will not "take" how much power you "give". It will only "take" how much it "need".

For example,

Case 1
M17x Default needs 240 watt
CPU = 100 watt
GPU = 100 watt
Motherboard, LED, Fans and others = 40 watt.
Power source (240 watt), 100% of the power is used up. (No throttle happened)

Case 2
M17x Upgraded needs 290watt
CPU = 100 watt
GPU = 150watt
Motherboard, LED Fans and others = 40 watt
Power source (240 watt), 100% of the power is used up but still not enough. (Throttle might happened)

Case 3
M17x Upgraded needs 290watt
CPU = 100 watt
GPU = 150watt
Motherboard, LED Fans and others = 40 watt
Power source (330watt), The supply power (330 watt) is larger than the needed one (290 watt). (Throttle might happened)

In case 3, the system is still only need 290 watt even if you supply more than that.
The CPU is design to draw 100 watt, it will draw 100 watt max forever
The GPU is design to draw 150 watt, it will draw 150 watt max forever.

So, I don't think the lift time of the electronic device/chip/board of the system will be reduce.

I take a desktop system as another example.
By default, the desktop have a 300 watt power supply. If you change the power supply to 1000 watt it will never kill the desktop. Am I right? blink.gif

That's bad. Intermittent problem. Your AW14 still under warranty, right?

I think there is something to do with the magnet on the "screen part" and "palm rest" part of the laptop.
My dell studio 1555, facing same issue like you last time. Dell came to change my motherboard twice and the problem still persists.
End up I get frustrated and open up the laptop myself to solve it.

If you call up Dell's tech to solve that issue, you can point to them this clue so that they won't have to change everything and can't solve the problem. smile.gif

QUOTE(darco33 @ Jul 31 2014, 07:38 PM)
hey guys, can i ask is it necessary to repaste GPU? or how long does original thermal paste last?

Btw i using m14x r2 (2 years old) and m11x r3 (3 years old), So far both my device are ok. no big issues , just curious about it.
*
What is the temperature while gaming?
If it is under 70, then is no problem at all.
If it is between 70 to 90, is up to you want to repaste or not.
If it is above 90, you will need to repaste already.

I usually will repaste if my laptop temperature is above 85 while gaming.
If the case is like gaming for 2 hours, the temperature slowly increase until 85. Then is still ok for me. I will just play anohter quater of half hour, then stop for a while. biggrin.gif

Your hinge broken or the "plastic" that hold the screw broken?
I have a R2 (new type hinge) top cover and screen cover. I didn't use anymore, I don't mind to sell you cheap cheap RM 50 maybe. Or whatever you want to pay.

Maybe you can post your photo here. smile.gif

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 23 2014, 07:05 PM)
the idea is just to clean the cooling system up (i.e. remove clogged dust on fans, and vents, then replace the thermal compounds on the cpu/gpu). all you need to know is how to get to those parts (i'm sure youtube videos have already taught you that).

how frequently you do this depends on how fast your machine starts to get hot. to me it's like twice every year (tbh my system has very little dust accumulated on the cooling system. there is no extreme cases like we saw on the internet, i.e. a whole chunk of cotton sugar like dusts clogging vents)

as for the tools to use, to me it's just toothbrush, cotton butts, thermal compound remover (you can also use isopropyl alcohol >90% concentration for this), and thermal paste. the choice of thermal paste is up to you.
*
isopropyl alcohol >90%

in lay-man term for easier understanding is IPA. you can find in hardware shop. tongue.gif

I just open the casing n check the fan, surprisingly it's still clean! But I don't know how to check n clean the vent, and as for TC it requires total disassemble the laptop right? Stil not confident to do it yet  hmm.gif  how much does TC cost usually? And any recommend? Totally newb to these man. It gets to 95'c after 30 mins of divinity original sin, the setting is maximum low.

Could it be the software then? When I first bought this laptop I did transfer alienresoawn in a pen drive just in case. Should I respawn it? unsure.gif

I know that the gpu is soldered to the motherboard but I read in some forum someone could change the gpu by doing something to it, is it true? Would totally change this gt555 to something else man  nod.gif

Where did you read that? tongue.gif

Hi, i have an Alienware M11x R2 5 years old (my oldest technology ever in my house sweat.gif)

I find that it is overheating quite badly d. Playing Dota 2 on decent graphics also starting to lag. Need to put ice pack underneath to cool it down when doing some gaming. Even if left idle, the laptop is slightly hotter compared to last time.
Any sifu can recommend me a good place (around subang jaya) to send my M11x R2 to service? Also possible to change the thermal compound on this?

Thanks
*
Well, I am not familiar about the shop.
And I personally own a M11x R2 before. And yes, is possible to change thermal compound on this.
But you have to bear in mind that, you need a complete tear down of the M11x if you want to access the fan and heatsink.
The design is different from M15x, M17x and M18x which is very easy to access the fan and heatsink.

Any shop u can recommend me that knows how to teardown the laptop? I dare not try myself as i scare i will damage it and i will be laptop less and no bidget to get a new one sweat.gif
Also did your matte/rubber finishing melt? My laptop finishing melted and is damn sticky all over, to the point that it is abit disgusting d. Had to buy those carbon fibre stickers off ebay to stick on the laptop just to avoid feeling the stickiness of the laptop sweat.gif
*
I must say, Yes! you have to buy one.
I bought mine last time before it become sticky.
You should really buy one for that. Especially the top cover.

Told you I not familiar with shop ma..

But M11x tear down you have to really be careful, there are few very fragile ribbon when you take out the cover at keyboard side.

Youtube got many tear down video la bro, can have a view.

I found one for you

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeqQQU_PWRg

Remember to watch closely at keyboard part, and 5:59 until 6:10, there are one tiny cable that need to be remove. Be extra careful, don't brutal.

I also attached some photo that grabbed from the video. About the ribbon and cable that you have to pay extra careful.

Hi All,

I'm happen to be one of the proud owner of alienware m11x R2. However, my hinge is starting to break down due to the hinge poor design. Upon dismantling for applying epoxy, I broke some of the clips for the lcd cover. Still usable, but cacat a bit.

Do you guys happen to know if there are shops that are selling alienware parts here in KL? Thankss.
*
I have one M11x R2 top cover. That one is match with new design hinge. I not sure it is fit yours.
Tell me if you need it, I can sell it to you whatever you want to pay for me, I didn't use it any more.
