u need to convert ur video too if u wanna make softsub into hardsub.. it takes long time n skill.. otherwise u will get crappy video..

Nope you can't for hardsub, if its softsub then no problem

I would suggest you to install VobSub to allow VDub to use the VobSub filter to add the ass, srt files and etc. For the video, convert it to lossless then reencode back to the destinated file in order to not lose much of the quality. Remember to use 2 pass encodes for best output of quality.

It will be softsubbed only, not hardsub if you mux

Well, I just reply allvin, so it's not related to the thread starter topic.

Eh...soft sub mean subtitle must be loaded externally and hard sub is in the movie itself right ?Those 3 tools I listed do hard sub without reconvert.Maybe I can say like "wrapping" the audio, video, subtitle in one video package.Just my guest only.I didn't read it's manual or help file.

MKV will not make it hard sub, it will just include it in the package. I prefer softsub, unless I'm making karaoke effects for PV.

Muxing into a container only but you still need DirectVobSub to decode it which means it is still considered as an external subtitle which is softsub. Hardsubbed videos you can't extract the subtitles out. Its best to use the VobSub filter in Vdub and reencode it into the movie.

Hope this clears all doubts.

Its the same with AVI or OGG Muxers. All include in the container only but its still softsubbed in the end.

Yep! That's the downside. To hardsub, u need to re-encode the video. Need to set the bitrate high high, if not your video will be "cacat" version

Basically hardsub videos have the subtitles in the video itself where you as the user will not be able to extract it off anymore or edit it. As for softsub, the subtitles comes with the movie itself in the same container where it can be extracted out and be edited.

So if you want to hardsub the subtitles into the video, there are 2 ways:-

1) Download VirtualDubMod (freeware) and download VobSub and install. Once installed, you open VirtualDub and go to its filters. In the filter section, there will be a filter call TextSub. Open it and add in the subtitle that is supported like .srt, .ass, .ssa and etc. Once loaded, you can check the subtitles with VirtualDub b4 encoding the movie.

2) Install Avisynth and get the VSFilter.dll file. Its the best framework available for videos.

Open notepad and type this :-
LoadPlugin("C:\avisynth\plugins\VSFilter.dll")

a) If the source is AVI, type:-
AviSource("C:\xxxx\xxxx.avi")
TextSub("C:\xxxx.srt") <--- example of loading a srt sub file, if others just change the extension

If the source is in mkv or other containers, type :-
DirectShowSource("C:\xxxx\xxxx.mkv") <--- same as above, follow the video's extension

b) Save the notepad into a .avs file and open it up in VirtualDub and encode it

PS : Make sure use 2 passes for your encode to achieve the quality. Best is to use a lossless source

shinjite, where can i find '2 passes' option? and i can't use xvid compression mode..got error there!

The 2 pass option is in the Xvid codec configuration
Encoding type use multipass, 1st pass then go to file>save as and check the first checkbox at the bottom to enable encoding in batch mode. Then go back to the Xvid configuration and choose multipass, 2nd pass and repeat the same provess. Then go to File > Job control and start the encoding process

Probably your xvid corrupted. Try uninstall xvid and install the latest xvid codec

Thats why its best to convert the raw to lossless so that you won't lose much quality of it
