I'm not sure myself mate, because I just became a HoD less than 1 year at my new job. I guess how I got the job was through networking (thanks to my contacts from my Big 4 years). Assuming that I don't screw up at my current job (as the learning curve is super steep and the responsibilities are too demanding ), the logical career progression would either be the head of finance or CFO of a big organisation. That's what I'm aiming for all this while (fingers crossed )

As for pay, hopefully I'll earn more when I'm in my 40s

That's super slow bro. You should be a senior already in your 3rd year based on average progression in Big 4. This applies to all lines (including tax). For advisory, their base pay is higher and their progression is faster too (considering the fee quantum vis-a-vis audit and tax).

You should be an AM/M in your 5th year. Consider changing firm or field.

What I meant was you'd be a M in fifth year. My bad.

He should still change to other Big 4 firm to start fresh. In my case, I didn't do too well in a Big 4 audit then I moved to another Big 4 doing advisory. I excelled at that firm, and was offered by one of my client's CEO to join them.

Now, a couple of years and a few jobs later, I'm at CFO/finance head already.
