Meant for the non-mechanically inclined reader, the checklist below highlights some potential problem areas to look out for in the limited time you have to examine a used car. Remember to inspect the car in broad daylight and not in the evening or at the night. A tip from the pros: Putting a Piece of cardboard under the engine after the test drive will help show fluid leaks. By the time, you have gone through the checklist, you should know the condition of the car at least as well as the owner does.

Exterior Inspection

Are door edges rusty or torn?
Do the doors, bonnet, and trunk open and close freely? (Problems here may indicate previous accident)
Are bumpers dented or rusty? Are they level?
Is the paint on the different panels of the same shade?
Is there any rust or hole at the bottom of the trunk and side wells?
Are the rubber parts and seals cracked?
Are tires bald or cracked or bulging?
Are the rims rusty, bent or cracked? Are they all the same?
Are any headlamps or signal lamps broken or cracked?
Is the exhaust system rusty?

Engine Inspection

Is the engine clean?
Has the engine been modified? If yes, why?
Look at the underside of the bonnet. is paint blistered?
Check fluid levels. Any leaks?
Are the V-belts frayed or cracked?
Is the radiator corroded?

Interior & Electrical Inspection

Is anything torn, broken or patched?
Is it rusty under the carpets?
Can both front seat be adjusted?
Is the dashboard cracked?
Is the windshield chipped or cracked?
Do all windows open and close?
Turn the steering left and right. Is it okay?
Depress the brake pedal. Does it feel right?
Depress the clutch pedal. Does it feel right?
Do the headlights work?
Do the windshield wiper work?
Does the air-con work?
Do the safety belts work?
Is the interior of the boot rusty?
Is there a jack and a spare tyre?
Are the threads on the spare tyre worn out?

Test Drive (Allow 30 minutes)
Switch on ignition but don't start engine.

Temperature light on?
Oil warning light on?
Charge warning light on?

Start the engine

Are all instruments and gauges working?
Depress the clutch several times. Any noises?
Switch off the engine. Does it restart?
Test the hand brake against the engine Works?
Pull forward. Get out of and check for leaks on the ground.
Put the car in reverse. Does it work? What about reverse lights?
Drive away. How does the car ride? Soft or hard?
Is acceleration smooth?
Any noises or vibrations when accelerating?
Any unusual engine noises or vibrations when cruising?
Any problems changing gears?
Drive up a hill. is the power okay?
Drive along a long wall. Hear any unusual sounds?
Any noise or vibrations when deceleration?
Make two tight 360 turn each way. Any noises?
take your hands off the steering. Does the car run straight? ( Warning: try this only in a deserted car park)
take you hands off the steering and brake. Does the car run straight? (Warning: try this only in deserted car park)
Go over a few bumps. Is the suspension okay?
Negotiate sharp corners. Is the handling okay?
Let the engine idle for a few minutes. Is the temperature stable?
Parallel park the car. Is the steering loose or tight?

Post-Drive Inspection

Open the bonnet. Hear or see anything unusual?
Does the engine seem too hot?
Does it restart when warm?

Most important of all, check that the chassis and engine numbers tally with those in the registration book. One last piece of advice: Never ever buy a used car on impulse-shop around.

Intend for this to be used by anyone who's looking for 2nd hand purchase...
Part II:
- Other mechanical issues: Mechanical power steering (MPS), has an established issue for Forte 2.0. So far mine has no problems, but in this forum noticed a cheap fix. Haven't done that.
- Changed the stock absorbers yesterday, were fine but after 4 years, have to change soon anyway.
Cost: RM 260 pair front, RM 220 pair back. Go to VANLI in Jln Ipoh. Naza Kia quoted RM 1600 for full set front+back. Workshop quoted RM 1200 for full set with labour. My cost - RM 610 parts+labour (OEM brand- MANDO, made in Korea).
- On interior: Good faux leather seats, doubt its real leather. Sound system is good. Surprised that all controls and finishings are in top notch even after 4 years. Still look like new, even the shiny bits.
- Don't like the font on the speedometer.. looks kiddy. And the rev meter doesnt show enough ticks. I prefer high-accuracy meters
- Boot is huge. Really good.
- On handling and cornering - I havent driven enough cars to give comment. Its good, but I doubt this car can compare to a Lancer or Civic or Focus which are renown for good handling. For me its good, but i cant compare.

Fuel consumption; the juicy bit:
The 2.0 is very dependent on driving style and right foot pressure. At first was going 9.0 km/l. After calming my right foot, got 11.0 km/l, huge difference. I track my fuel consumption using an app called aCAR.
BHP Petrol has Bayer additives, at double dosage from Germany. I also use Shell for Bonuslink points.

BHP: 10.82 km/l (1570km using 145 l)
Shell: 10.55 km/l (1332 km using 126.6 l)

Difference 2.6%. I spend RM500/mth or RM 6000 a year on petrol, so thats RM 156 annually saved using BHP. Plus using my UOB One card, i get 10% (cashback + rebate) off with BHP.
This numbers are comparable to quoted Forte 2.0 figures and Fuelly stats.
WIll do more tests using other fuels soon. I do feel BHP is better.

That's about all I have to say about the car. Overall happy with the car. Money well spent for a high-spec car; vs Vios,MYvi,City etc

just done service for my car on 30K service, change the power steering fluid as SC recommended to change. may i know it need to change? and how long it can last? thanks
*
Power steering fluid doesn't need to be replaced that often. only when a major part of the steering is changed. It is ideal to replace every 45,000km.

when we park with handbrake on. release foot brake...rear side got some squeaking sound....
when we park with handbrake on. push a bit the car...also got same sound at rear...
is it brake? hand brake? brake pad habis? disc brake kotor?
*
Overheating brakes can cause a light squeaking, especially when the brakes are still cold. If there is sufficient pad material remaining, heat is a possible cause for squeaking.
