some impressions after using it since saturday, stock ROM, bricked kernel, stock recovery

battery life averages around 3-4 hours SOT with mixed wifi & LTE usage
i think it will get better after i set it up properly, currently I'm on bricked kernel with Fauxclock, min CPU frequemcy set to 96khz, let's see where it goes from here

this thing is fast, nuff said
i've been flashing stuff on it the whole yesterday night, and it never takes longer than 2 minutes, you can't imagine my happiness, as someone who came from a galaxy S

screen is sharp, with no dead pixels or backlight bleed, the contrast is definitely not as high as galaxy S as you can see the grey when the phone is booting up, but the colours are all very nice, and it's bright, too bright, i had to set it to minimun brightness when indoors

speakers I can't really comment, except that i do miss notifications when I'm outside

camera is very slow, and results not satisfying. Currently I'm using camera FV-5 as default camera for better performance. and the viewfinder on the stock camera app is really annoying as it crops out your picture to fit the screen aspect ratio, this means you get stuff in your picture that you never intended

all in all, money well spent, I'm happy rclxm9.gif

That's because N5 isn't using an AMOLED display like your previous Galaxy S tongue.gif The blacks will never be blacks unless it's AMOLED.

I know, I guess we can hope for the day where amoleds get as efficient as lcds

More on the screen: I hope Google fixes the auto brightness
The screen has a very wide range of brightness, but auto brightbess only adjusts in a very narrow range, and its worse that it adjusts too bright for almost every situation, this ends up killing the battery

thanks for the suggestion, will try it out and report

As of now, I'm using Faux kernel + Faux123 app + his recommended settings on his G+ page
s2w/d2w disabled
left it alone after chargning to 100% while I use the laptop
until now: 3h08min -2%
I think i'll be keeping this set up smile.gif

for those that have tried out Bricked kernel and want to switch to other kernels, remember to flash the uninstall .zip from the author's xda thread. not doing so will cause other kernels to not work and severe battery drain.

battery life report
been at home all day, so wifi is connected the whole time

unpluged since around 12am today, don't remember the exact time
please don't mind the "6hrs 38m 53s on battery", since i think it got resetted when i reboot the phone, you can see the gap in the chart

Battery processes http://i.imgur.com/NIhJGJh.png?1
SOT http://i.imgur.com/sziueje.png?1
Graph http://i.imgur.com/o6xi0xw.png?1

I'll test the mixed usage when I have the chance

You guys should install 'App Ops' to disable some apps like Google Play from keep waking up your phone. My battery drain on WiFi is 1% for 8hr standby.

that's a nice target to aim for, but wouldn't that affect your upgrades and push services if they don't run in the background?

and guys, i have a problem with Asphalt 8: Airborne
the game runs fine for he first time, but on the second and consecutive lauches, the game won't register any input
i can still here the music and scroll, but no taps are registered
anyone has this problem?

also, there was a small hiccup when it launches, the graphics will freeze and music stops, for about 1 second or so

I think that's something to do with Asphalt's optimization with KitKat 4.4
I've seen a lot of other people having issues with Asphalt on their Nexus 5.
Just minor issues, nothing much to worry about like sudden frame dips.
Maybe the app doesn't run well with KitKat rclxub.gif

i see, i can get it to work again after clearing user data, but the thing repeats itself

reporting about 4.4.1 camera updated performance
camera is now faster, and finally usable, previously it was painfully slow
autofocus and saving are both faster, picture quality seems better too

my top 3 players are
1. mx player
2. v player
3. bs player
all 3 have gesture controls for brightness & volume, hw or sw decoding selection, and good subtitle support, but somehow mx player manages to play some files better than the other 2, v player is a bit off, bs player a bit more off, but all 3 are good

Why wait? Just do it. The camera improvement alone is worth the update. Also WhatsApp works in ART now.

Reaaally?! Imma try it now!

Strange, can't get the phone to boot into ART, selected ART from developer options and clicked OK, but still boots using dalvik

I'm on custom recovery & kernel & 30% battery, does any of these matter?

Some apps like Xposed prevents you from changing to ART because its unsupported. I'm running Franco and Linaro kernel with no problem on ART
*
ah.... i see, so i'll most probably need stock kernel and minus xposed to get ART working...
oh well, bummer, i'll stick with dalvik for now

i think it's ok to get it now, the 'problems' you see in the forums are but a fraction of the total shipment volume, and so far none of the units being revied by tech sites have any problem with them, so it's safe that the problematic units are few in between

and you should clearly define the 'problems'
bad speaker is a hardware limitation, LG just used a cheap unit for their limited budget
screen cracks easily when dropped face down happens to almost all mordern smartphones
things you should be worry about are dead pixels or backlight bleed, but those are really really few

I think my unit has the problem with the main board because no laptops/PC can detect my phone after it plugged in. sad.gif

Google US called me and said that I will need to send it back to Japan for warranty purpose.

If the problem is changing the whole board, I don't think that repairing it locally will be a wise choice because the price of fixing it will be expensive.
*
really sorry to hear that, but have you tried using different USB cables?

battery stats get resetted whenever you reboot or reach full charge, as to why it resets when reboot, i forgot, it's something to do with how android stores its data
