I have an extra DSL-2640B router given by TM lying around. The router that I am currently using is also a TM DSL-2540B. Is it possible to use it as an access point? If so, what are the steps that needs to be done?

I want to set it up at the second floor of my house to gain better signal coverage.

Hope to hear from u guys soon. Thanks in advance.

Yes you can, it's very simply but it's a wired access point not that WDS kind.

1) First you reset your extra 2640B
2) Then you login and disable LAN DHCP and set the IP of the router to a client IP of your 2540B let say 192.168.1.254 if it's not in use.
3) Then configure the WiFi setting
4) Plug a config from LAN port (2540B) to a LAN port (2640B) and place in on ur second floor
5) Turn the power on, up and running and you're good to go

2 and 3 must be done via LAN to your PC or it may get messy.

D-Link DSL-2640B could be flashed to OpenWRT. URL
And with OpenWRT, you could do pretty much anything, including (WDS) wireless bridging etc.

Though, according to the URL above, the device has stability issues with AP mode in 802.11g mode, but should be OK in 802.11b mode. The statement above could possibly be outdated and can only be applied to older version of OpenWRT, not the current stable version (Attitude Adjustment, or even trunk snapshot) (?)

Currently, no support for ADSL for Broadcom chipset in OpenWRT. But it's not a problem since TS only wanna use the wireless function of the device.

** NOTE: The practice of flashing to OpenWRT should be done by those adventurous and with enough knowledge and the willingness to learn. wink.gif
