Guys, what's best FD/etc for rainy day funds? From what I can see, seems like boils down to SCB bonu$aver vs CIMB regular FD

SCB https://www.sc.com/sg/save/current-bonussaver.html
1.88% on $25k
- need to spend $500 per month on credit card (easy enough)

CIMB http://www.cimbbank.com.sg/index.php?tpt=cimb_sg&tpl=sgdfd
1.1% on 1 year FD
*
CIMB Starsaver. 0.8% if you deposit $100 or more every month. Simple, no time limits, promo periods, complex conditions/jumping through hoops AND you can go up to $750,000 before a lower rate of 0.5% applies to the excess above 750K. And you get free cheque books/current account as well. And I luv CIMB's preferred customer service... my r/ship manager actually remembers my name and fetches me a drink as he runs behind the counter to kowtim my transactions instead of me queuing.

Reminds me of Alliance Bank in the 90s when they were just a small bank with a few branches, and they were eager for customers.

2. How can I apply for CIMB Preferred?
To enjoy the privileges of CIMB Preferred, you have to establish a banking relationship with us, worth a minimum of S$250,000 in deposits, investment and/or insurance.
We may also extend invitation, at our discretion, to selected customers based on other qualifying criteria.

Guess I need to queue with the cattle tongue.gif

Home loans, they'll also invite you.

Errr... 24% p.a. interest only if can't pay the bill right? Credit cards only used to cater for his emergency case with his already own cash parked at higher interest rate account. Got one month to convert the funds to cash and pay the bills. No asking him to over swipe beyond his saving, that one is another issue.
Interest free period between cc transaction and due date of balance only applies to purchase transactions. Pulling cash from your cc is a cash advance, not purchase transaction. Interest starts accruing and upfront fees apply immediately upon the withdrawal transaction.

Unless you park your cash in your CC account, you're going to be paying significant charges.

Think she talking balance transfer or fund transfer. I took one before, UOB put 50k cash (the CSO said the max amount is around 75% of the card's credit limit) into my OCBC saving account, with 1.5% processing fee (nego with them say you got better offer from other bank and they will push this fee down), 12 months interest free instalment with minimum payment each month like a credit card. Bought some shares, then end of the 12 months period sold it and pay it lump sum back. Borrowing 50k money for a year with only 750 extra charge, not bad I think. Can apply online, call the CSO, or the CSO will call you once in a while and bug you.

Something like this, not sure why can't find it anymore in UOB website:

http://info.maybank2u.com.sg/personal/card...s-transfer.aspx

This is basically a personal overdraft or personal loan, which they channel to you through a CC. Banks also do it by sending you a check for $XXXX which you can bank into any account.

But generally, withdrawing cash from a credit card is the most expensive option out there.

I have a friend recently went JB and buy laptops and monitor.. then when he go through custom.. he managed to escape from the laptop gst charges..
but he kena charged for his monitor.. which cost less than 200 sgd....
*

Generally if it is for personal use, customs will let it go. Especially if you taken it out of the box.

But in this case, you mentioned laptopS. If that's the case, I think customs might have done him a favour in choosing the cheapest item to impose GST. They could have imposed GST on his multiple laptops, as that's obviously beyond reasonable personal use.

Guys, just wondering any of you drives and KEEP a malaysian registered car in Singapore? I checked from ITA such that

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

EP holder can drive in, and from 3., we gotta pay like 20$ per day for 2am-5pm entry, thereafter is free. I also read from somewhere that maximum number of days per entry is 90 days. Is this true?

Well, in short, what is the maximum number of days with extension we can keep our car in SG, and also what is the ballpark figure charges per day?
*
#1 is predicated on residence status, not employment/pass/visa status. Nobody who resides in SG can drive a MY car in SG. It's more stringent for SCs and PRs who cannot drive MY cars regardless of where they reside.

Some interesting news for finance salaries in SG vs MY. While PPP seems to be equalising (you buy as much kangkung in MY using your RM salary as someone in SG can buy using his S$ salary), a lot of the more conspicuous expenditure is denoted by global pricing eg. luxuries, branded goods etc.

CFO Salary Guide: Which Country Pays the Most?

PPP dollars measure the affordability of living in a particular place, but they are not real currencies. You would need hard currency to buy property and invest in stocks and bonds. Since mutual funds, executive savings plans and international mortgages are usually denominated in US dollars, the more of it your local-currency salary can buy, the better for you.

Malaysia or Singapore:
The 2014 Hays survey notes that, while finance salaries in Malaysia are still lower than in Singapore, “they are starting to align.” This is a key finding for Malaysians who are working abroad, typically in Singapore, Hays suggests. “Businesses are keen to attract these returning Malaysians as they recognise that candidates who have worked and studied abroad excel.”

At this point, however, Singapore salaries still trump those in Malaysia in both PPP and US dollar terms (see chart below).

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) conversion factor is 0.7 for China, 0.9 for Hong Kong, 1.1 for Japan, 0.4 for Malaysia and 0.6 for Singapore, which are the 2012 factors used by the World Bank. Sure la. You are competing with the herds of indians just off the plane knocking on doors for a banking job. These ppl have the experience and qualification(although the uni nvr heard before) and willing to work hard for a pittance and most importantly can talk and sell themselves. What do you have above and beyond them?

The SG based ones at the bottom of the post.

From a CNA interview, the Asia CEO of Standard Chartered is apparently a Punjabi man.

With so many in the top position, imagine how many of their countrymen have been installed below them and perpetuating the hiring and promotion practices.

India 2nd most populated country in the world, still acceptable for Indian CEO heading the Asia part. CEOs and the management are also employees. They still need to answer to their boss which is the board, who need to answer to the shareholders. All these still under the tight control of the authorities here. Anything illegal, unfair employment etc, authorities step in, can pack bag go Changi airport or Changi prison already.

My department still majority locals, only one Indian, but the guy is LSE grad, should be competent enough. If you think there is any biased selection/discrimination during the recruitment process, you can complain to the bank or the authority. They will investigate for sure. I heard people got sacked and charged because of this. I don't know you, but I certainly won't risk my job and future for some countrymen I barely know. For relatives and friends who are applying, we have to disclose the relationship and most of the time another department head will take over the interview process to avoid complication.

Even accounting for India's population, I think the perception is that they are grossly over-represented in Singapore banks, if not even wider and farther.

And it's not about legality (although Singapore's new Fair Employment Framework seems to take a step in that direction). It's about bias. They are not putting unqualified people in the roles which they manage or influence. It's that there is a bias towards certain candidates during the more subjective portions of the process... like interviews, final deliberation. And it's inevitable... people simply like to work (ie. hire & promote) with people whom they like and feel comfortable with.

It's in every organisation. However in Singapore,.. the PERCEPTION is that it has taken a whole new level of aggressiveness in banking. Note that I said perception (you may have experience to the contrary... although I also believe there's no smoke without fire,.. so there ya go). You just have to go to any local forum or chat board to validate it. Even the govt's lead-up comments on the Fair Employment Framework singled out banking as an industry to watch over.

Just renewed my passport at the UTC (Urban Transformation Center) in Ipoh. It's actually very fast. I was there at 8:30am yesterday (Sunday) when it opened, my number was the 9th, completed the submission and photo taking by 9am (no forms or photos needed, just bring old passport and mykad), went for breakfast nearby, and came back & collected my new passport at 10:15am.

Was actually quite impressed.

Doing it in SG would have taken 3 days, bringing your own photos, filling up forms and 2 personal trips to the consulate (deposit and pickup).

You might want to temper that belief with the fact that there have been numerous recent incidents where the citizenry's backlash in response to 'provocative' Internet postings were disproportionate to put it mildly.

QUOTE(Night Fury @ Apr 13 2014, 10:42 AM)
Ladies and gentlemen,

I'm going back to KL next thursday night. My flight is 10pm and I'm boarding the plane at Senai airport.

I'm working until 6pm that day. My friend told me that if I were to leave my company (at woodlands) at around 6pm, I might not be able to catch the flight as the custom queue will be very congested.

Question : Is my friend right? What time do you think I should leave my company in order to be able to catch the flight at senai airport without being too rush.
*
If I were you, I would leave SG at 4pm, cross the causeway at a leisurely pace, reach Senai at 6pm, have dinner and coffee there and check in at 8pm.

After 5pm onwards, it's peak hour everywhere. You should allow a couple of hours in case something unexpectated happens. And if you've never missed a flight before, the inconvenience can be unprecedented and spoil an entire trip.

With the current MH370 fiasco, I would be cautious. At Ipoh airport 2 weeks ago, for the first time, all the passengers got their bags opened for checking, shoes and belts off to go through the X-ray machine. What used to be a 30 minute process to gate in 72 passengers, took almost 90 minutes.
