QUOTE(SnoWFisH @ Jun 10 2014, 10:10 PM) I think you got me wrong here. I'm not saying to supplement the BF with glucose water (it will be more harmful than formula feeding imho) during normal feeds. I was talking in the context where the mother is still in GA after a LSCS and the baby needs milk and BF is not possible (like , 6-8 hours after delivery). Instead of feeding formula to a hungry newborn, just feed him/her a few drops of glucose water since BF is not possible. The moment the mother is conscious, BF immediately. This is because the glucose water will just provide enough energy for the baby to sustain himself/herself, while still maintaining the "rejection" towards it so that the baby still prefers the mother's breast. Hope I cleared up some of the air here. Most of the paeds and lactation consultants provided this advice and tip to help BF as sometimes the nurses pressure you to provide formula milk by telling you the baby is hungry and the mother's still in surgery. I made this mistake and my wife suffered for it. Others can definitely learn from my mistake. Good of you to clarify. Thank you. At the hospital is a totally different ballgame than at home, where most bottles are needed (hospitals that insist on feeding formula to newborns should feed them with droppers/syringes/spoon, not bottles), and a few drops of glucose water is a different amount than a "bottle" worth, which, since we're talking bottles, here, was what I had to assume you were talking about!

Its great for you to bring it up to correct me. It would be disastrous for others to take my work for it and I did not make it clear. Most hospitals now feed BF intended babies with cups. Unless you make it clear that your BB is going to be exclusively formula fed and you supply the bottle, only then they will start feeding with formula using bottles. Back to bottles....how long does your BB take to finish up the milk? Mine finishes her 5 oz milk with using 2 hole teat within 5 mins...thinking if i should move on the 3/4 hole teats....btw she's 9 months old now....

I stayed with size 1 teat until after my baby turned 18mo. Our boobs don't change, why should the bottle? Better to drink and eat slow-slow. Eating/drinking fast will lead to over-eating and obesity later. I only changed because when I tried to introduce other milk, baby refused. I was trying so many types of milk, all also don't want. Only wanted my EBM. I switch to size 3 teat and then my baby was willing to take goat's milk. Still refusing all other milk and if mommy is around, even goat's milk cannot. Straight from mummy only.

Ya, breast-fed baby prefer teat size 1, continue using this size during baby's entire breastfeeding period This post has been edited by tyngtyng.quek: Jun 16 2014, 11:18 AM
