Tq for the tip  smile.gif ,yes,i plan to fully bf LO ,hubs also wants me to BF and is 100% pro bf,just a bit concerned if family members will try to intervene and force feed LO formula when i am not around   ohmy.gif ,,, i like the texture of nuk and pigeon though, very nice and soft, medela calma seems a bit hard and the nipple is quite long, but eh,have to try and see  nod.gif ,, if medela calma works,i let u know  smile.gif

Yes...I understand...be VERY careful about LO's grandparents....they will always say your milk not enough, you want to starve your baby meh? See he/she crying cuz hungry... vmad.gif vmad.gif doh.gif . Can't blame them considering that BF is highly discouraged during their generation.

Unless they are supportive of you BF (which you will need a lot of support), I advise you to do your confinement elsewhere/ at ur own home. That way, nobody but you and ur hubby will feed your baby at night, though it will be extremely hard on you.

BF is definitely a darn difficult road to take, but all the best to you! thumbup.gif flex.gif

yes true! even when i talk about breastfeeding in front of my mom,she just goes like hmmm ok la bagus la ,then she mentions about other topics ,,haih my mom and aunties,MIL too are not exactly keen on the idea of BF ( like you said, they believe FM is better, all came from the FM better for your kid timezone) but that is ok with me, if one chooses to FM,its their choice, so they must respect my choice to fully BF LO too brows.gif , im doing my confinement at home but biasala malay tradition, all your aunties neighbours cousins bla bla will come over to look , and your mom wajib jaga you during confinement,, MIL will also come over unsure.gif ,, but very lucky HUBS is here during my confinement (hubs currently on leave)and VERY LUCKY that hubs also mulut lancang whistling.gif ,glad that he will be my backup icon_idea.gif , brows.gif ,, thanks for the support and looking forward to join the BF journey

My wife and I tried feeding our newborn daughter (Bottle train as she's gonna go back to work in 2 months) with Avent bottles... total fail. She cried and cried.

With some research my wife told me to grab a Tommy Tippee for newborns, RM39 with bottle and 0+ teat = works like a charm for my daughter.

The rubber teat is much softer in comparison to Avent's. However once she's a bit older we may switch back to Avent once she's got the hang of being bottle fed

Nowdays most of the bottle comes in BPA free, just nid to thought about the aftermath as you need to replace the the nipple when its degraded, so it is recommended to buy bottle which you need to consider about the nipple availability, find the most standard size bottle so you can easily find a nipple replacement. I will personally suggest TS to try on Pigeon feeding bottle.

Do you plan to fully BF your LO? If you do, here's a lesson from our mistake here. No matter how low you think your milk supply is, do not feed your formula at all. Feeding formula will just screw up your milk production indirectly as the schdule, timing will be different (babies are suppose to feed little and frequently, and formula does the opposite). You will have problems playing catchup. If you need to supplement, supplement with glucose water instead.

I'm sorry, but I totally disagree about supplementing with glucose water. It will have the same effect as formula. No difference at all.

To me, how to be successful in bf is to NOT HAVE FORMULA IN THE HOUSE. Before baby born, tell EVERYBODY that intends to come to where you are confined that they can bathe baby, change baby's diaper, burp baby, BUT NOBODY is to feed baby except you for 1 WHOLE MONTH. Then the first month, you do nothing but feed baby. If baby just wants to be stuck to you 24-7, buy a ring sling and wear your baby. DL DL DL DL. No pumping even for 4 weeks.

While pregnant, search for lactation consultant contact details. Call them up and ask how much they cost, what are their hours, how much to come to your house, how much for you to go visit them, where their office is, how far they go for visiting... Keep all the info with you at the confinement house.

If you need to supplement, don't give formula and don't give glucose water. Instead, take out that info and CALL ONE OF THE LACTATION CONSULTANTS YOU RESEARCHED. They will not only teach you how to increase your supply, they will teach you how to supplement with formula in a way that will help your milk production.

How to know if your baby needs supplementing? It's NOT because your baby constantly crying, it's NOT because your baby is yellow, it's NOT because your baby DL non-stop. You know your baby needs supplementing if nothing is coming out of your baby! What goes in, must come out! Measure the pee and the poo. Here's the info for enough pee or poo: http://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/enough-milk/

Now back to bottles: don't buy a lot of the same type. Buy one of many types. Your baby will have their preference. I hated the MAM bottle, but after trying several types of nipples, my son refused to take anything but the MAM nipple. So I end up using the MAM nipple with Avent bottles.

I think you got me wrong here. I'm not saying to supplement the BF with glucose water (it will be more harmful than formula feeding imho) during normal feeds. I was talking in the context where the mother is still in GA after a LSCS and the baby needs milk and BF is not possible (like , 6-8 hours after delivery). Instead of feeding formula to a hungry newborn, just feed him/her a few drops of glucose water since BF is not possible. The moment the mother is conscious, BF immediately. This is because the glucose water will just provide enough energy for the baby to sustain himself/herself, while still maintaining the "rejection" towards it so that the baby still prefers the mother's breast.
Hope I cleared up some of the air here. Most of the paeds and lactation consultants provided this advice and tip to help BF as sometimes the nurses pressure you to provide formula milk by telling you the baby is hungry and the mother's still in surgery. I made this mistake and my wife suffered for it. Others can definitely learn from my mistake.

And yes, correct latching technique is very very important... different babies prefer different bottles....and after my baby took the spout cup at 5 months, she rejects all kinds of nipple shape bottles. We're still using the newborn flow due to her strong sucking strength...she can finish 6 oz BM in under 5 mins shocking.gif
