There shouldn't be a delay in your notifications arriving while your phone is asleep. Trust me, over the years I've forgotten to silence my phone during the night enough times only to be woken up by a 3:13AM *ping* that I'm sure it works all too well. :-)
I thought of one other thing to check. If you visit Settings > Wifi and then tap the menu button (3 vertical dots) in the lower-right corner, then select Advanced, what is Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep set to? If you change the setting to Always does that clear up the problem?
