Now trying to run PCSX2 on this thing. Tried Front Mission 5 with it (with VirtualGamePad for controls) and OMG IT RUNS!!1111!

But like Doom 3 on my Note 2, it's more a proof of concept than anything truly playable at this point. Maybe after a few gens after Cherry Trail it would be fully usable but right now it's pretty choppy out-of-the-box and needs some serious optimizations.

On the other hand, Homeworld 2 works perfect, though I need to set it up to run in a window somehow so that I can use a custom VGP on it. It's either that or Gestureworks. Though I'd rather run things in a window and GW doesn't really support that.

At this point, if I run it in Portrait it defaults to some weird sort of semi-window anyway, and I could play well enough with the extended touch keyboard + TouchMouse in float mode.

But still, mobile Homeworld 2 woohoo. Maybe I should try Knights of the Old Republic next, if I can figure out how to control it lol. Sure, an external controller would work, but what's the fun in that?

Don't try to run desktop games in portrait mode, most likely you'll end up confusing the game usually tongue.gif

guys.. any1 tried outputting the w4 to external monitor? can it be full screen? is there any update needed? thanks.. smile.gif
*
yeah, it can be full screen, but depending on your drivers you might not be able to get it to duplicate your screen and if that's the case and you don't have a mouse... that's gonna be painful.

Anyway, for W4 retrogamers out there, I managed to get Knights of the Old Republic 2 running portrait with VGP:
*
Technically running the game in a small enough window to fit the portrait resolution is not running it in portrait mode .tongue.gif

It is an interesting technique that I should give it a try though!

Apparently HW2 CAN actually run in full portrait window, through some weird hocus pocus in the Lua based game code. Yes the control bar and other UI elements get stretched weirdly, but it does work.

And for KOTOR 2, if you don't do the whole landscape-launch-turn-portrait ritual, it actually runs fully portrait with - again - only the UI elements going wonky; the game itself adapts well to being run in 800x1280.
That's why I said game never expected to be run in portrait orientation, I was referring to the UI tongue.gif

QUOTE
That said, this leaves no way to use the Win8 virtual keyboard for text input OR VGP, so yes: Pseudo-Portrait Mode then. Full-Portrait might work with GestureWorks though.

The "donate" version of VGP (the one that allows for customization and stuff - aka the one you want) is $5. Plus as a bonus, the dev (or rather the maintainer) is quite quick at offering support, which makes that 5 bucks well worth it.

Updates for VGP are kinda slow though, but yeah... $5.

Yeah, please spare a thought for the passionate developers working after their work hours on stuff they're passionate about by buying them coffee!

Just got mine quite a bargain at Indonesia, while waiting for surface pro 3.

Anyone got solution on charging the tablet while using USB devices? If connect mouse/keyboard then can't charge?
*
On the internet some are selling modified USB hubs which claim to allow this. But success has not been guaranteed yet.

Not for me.. trying to match the discrepancies are difficult without a mouse. But the touch experience with this game is super good.
*
Just need to get used to it I guess, don't worry too much about wheter or not you're tapping accurately or not, just use the force and STAB the screen, FIRST TRY!! Doubt will just make it less accurate! tongue.gif

Press and hold the Windows button and Power button. The device will then boot into recovery mode and you can choose to restore from a working backup.
*
Or if you didn't remove the recovery partition, you should be able to hard reset it.

Is there any good replacement charger for W4? I know a typical 2.1A charger will not work on this. And I saw some chargers advertising 3.4A selling $69, or an Aragorn charger stating 2.5A selling for $35. Will any of these work? Anyone has a good brand to recommend?
*
Find something that works for an iPad, it seems to be looking for some special trigger. Also, you can try getting those charge boosters.

Just notice my W4 audio phone jack has become mono output. Try multiple cable and it seems it is the phone jack which is broken. Has anyone tried sending such defect to Acer for repair? Or maybe I should just plug in a Sounblaster  Play to the USB port and be done with it?
*
If it's under warranty, I don't see why you can't send it back to Acer.

Anyone experiencing problem with the micro HDMI port?

Tried a hdmi converter, 2 direct micro hdmi to hdmi cables to 2 different TVs. Both did not work.

Could it be my hdmi port is faulty?
*
What do you mean by didn't work? You can't seem to duplicate the monitor image so try extending and using lower resolutions.

Nothing, the display is not detected at all.
Tried projecting via the side bar, same.

Tried using 1 converter, 2x micro to normal hdmi cables and 3x TVs.

Safe to assume that my hdmi port is faulty?  sad.gif
*
sound that way... ok.. just to be sure, you sure you didn't accidentally plug the micro HDMI into the micro USB jack? Just asking cause I nearly did it once. tongue.gif

Need for confirmation. Does the Iconia W4 have GPS capability?
Thanks.

Nope, I think the Asus Vivotab Note 8 is the only one with GPS.

Hie today I meet a problem with the tablet rear camera. I checked the device manager, it said the camera got power failure. Anyone had this problem b4? can self fix or do i need to send it back for warranty?
*
Power failure? That's new, but then I rarely use the camera. do you have other USB devices plugged into the W4? Try removing them and see.

so dissapointed with 1gb ram. if not i would but it straight away

This is the super entry level Windows Tablet meant to compete against the lower priced Android tablets, I myself am curious at how well can 1GB be used to run Windows, my theory is that Modern UI apps should be fine because they can be memory managed more efficiently, but multi tasking your desktop apps is gonna be a stretch.

DOTA 2? ahahahah, the Graphics clock is slower than the Acer W4's which was just barely about to play DOTA2 with only 2GB of RAM so I really don't think that's possible.

But anyway... you're gonna see a lot of these cheap Windows Tablets coming from everyone, so if you're worried about build quality of this thing, you can wait for the one by Acer.. I think they just call it, Acer W.

i think just opening some powerpoint slides and web browser (case for a student) would be too demanding for this 1gb ram.
*
Technically if you keep it under control and not open too many things at once you should be fine.

hi guys, just wanna to know will 1G rams sufficient for normal surfing and minor office work.

planning to buy the coming acer 8W but new to window 8.1

hope to hear from you all.

tks.

Finalizing my Windows 8.1 1GB review using the SNS Joi8, I can tell you that 1GB RAM is SURPRISINGLY usable for Windows, you just need to put up with a slight wait times when the system pages around the swap file when you switch around apps and other things.

BUT...

Well.. from the initial previews the 8W seems to have 32GB of onboard storage, which is good, because the 16GB of the Joi8 is causing a LOT of headache. Due to the fact that.

- Free space on init boot - 4.5GB
- Free space after Office 365 installation (which installs EVERYTHING, unless you hack the install config file) - 2.5GB
- Free space after Steam - 1.8GB (!)

Then remember that.. in that 1.8GB Windows will use it to
- Install any store apps (because store apps can't be properly installed to SD card right now)
- Temp files created by programs
- Temps files for installing Windows Update purposes

16GB Storagee was VERY VERY bad!! tongue.gif
