My unifi modem don't have QOS functionality.
Any recommend on what modem/router I should get for QOS purpose?
A lot of my housemate are heavy torrentor and downloaders, so i'm looking for a good one.
*
try and head over to the Asus router threads, they have a few units that supports QOS. you can also flash custom firmware on the routers and get more functionality.

torrenting used to be an issue at my place too, then we agreed to change the settings of the torrent client so that it doesn't hog the network as much. only 2 max DL per laptop, global connection limited to 50, stop seeding when ratio=0. now no more problem when streaming HD content. we are using VIP10.

that being said, QOS would still be the better route if they are heavy torrenter. not sure how good QOS are, since i havent personally try them, but can definitely put the torrent connection to a lower priority

need advise here..

.unifi vip5 good for torrenting and youtube ? thats only my main purpose and suit my monthly budget...maxis fiber 10mbps dun get coverage at my area..maybe tm dun allow maxis tu rent their equipment at my place..tq
*
yeap it is good. but it depends on how many users in your house? and are all of them torrenting as well or stream HD content only?

was on vip5, upgraded to vip10 during the promo because a few users in the house torrent quite frequently, so double the speed do help since the content would be downloaded faster.

Received call by tm & time for their promo. Time & maxis seems to offer better value for me since im an astro user. I told tm not interested since other telco offering better price & Im not willing to be bound with them for another 2 years.
*
if your house can access Time network, i'd choose that instead of Maxis. the maxis thread is not that convincing enough. not to say that other telcos are perfect, all have their fair share of issues but Time looks more promising.

Personally I am using Unifi at the place i am currently renting, my family's home is going the Maxis route since it is cheaper if you want to use Astro too. and Time doesn't cover our area.

Why is Time not available to landed properties? In that case should I just take the RM179/mo promo? Got to be tied for 2 more years leh...
*
QUOTE(cybpsych @ Jan 26 2014, 09:41 AM)
majority existing landed properties already covered by national incumbent service/infrastructure provider, Telekom.

TIME is targeting new housing areas, whereby they cooperate with developers to install fiber infra during development.

2years contract is not much, provided that...

1) you have no plans to move/relocate within that period.
2) there is no other better provider within that period  doh.gif

so, most of us are already satisfied with unifi's service, so 2years is transparent.

i didnt know i'm reaching my end-of-contract until unifi staff called me for contract extension  sweat.gif
*

and another thing is to roll out fibre is very costly. Time concentrates more on high rise building since the cost would be lower and higher potential customer in one area.

as update to this, i found out after restarting pc, i can get full speed for the next 2 days.
but after that, it will fall back to the 2xxkbps speed.
why does a pc restart can cause a full speed? idea? i only download from that server via ftp .
*

have you tried using FreeDownloadManager? an open source alternative to IDM. I use it to download via FTP and i get max speed, around 12xx KB/s for my VIP 10

QUOTE(wshen6 @ Jan 30 2014, 02:18 PM)
Hi guys, I am using VIP 5 and would like to stream live tv channel using my raspberry pi on my tv. But the stream is not very smooth and I would like to know how could I possibly detect the problem whether is the internet speed, router or the server. Can QOS, port forwarding or any other method help improve video streaming and stability?

Thank you for your time.  notworthy.gif
*
are you streaming via LAN cable or wireless? stock router? if the stream is still not smooth via lan cable, then most likely it is routing issue.

if it is smooth by LAN, but jerky on wireless, then perhaps the location is a bit too far, or hardware limitation of the router. others might be able to give better input, as my knowledge is fairly limited.

QOS would only help if you are torrenting at the same time.

i have a rpi running raspbmc and it streams okay from the PCs that are connected to the same wireless network. have not tried live tv as i hardly watch live stuff on the rpi

I connect through LAN cable with stock router, if the problem is routing issue, how can I resolve the problem? Will custom router improve streaming? Btw, thank you for answering smile.gif
*
routing is at TM's backends. have you tried lowering the stream quality? where is the video streaming from?

have you tested streaming from other locations?

Planning to get those Asus router but... see if they can replace it for free since I think it is still under warranty.
*
my Unifi supplied D-Link router fried. called their CS and he walked me through in ensuring that all the things are properly set up, so confirm the supplied wireless router died. it'll cost 170 to get a replacement from unifi, and since my warranty is over, i bought an Asus RT-N12 D1 at lowyat, jayacom for 120.

the signal is better, and lower ping, and QOS support (not that i need it now). but def a good buy. icon_rolleyes.gif

asus has a broad range of wireless routers, rt-n12 d1 fits my budget nicely. custom os support too if you like to tinker around.

was on Dlink 615, the router went kaput. bought asus RT-N12 D1 at RM120. good value and good performance. not high end, but better than d-link 615 in terms of signal strength and stability

I've tried using all those three channels..doesn't work.
I don't think the problem is caused by interference since the wireless signal is completely lost.
And the problem is getting worse. Just now I can only browse for 10+ minutes before I need to reboot the router again, after reboot the wireless signal is available for about 1 minute b4 it is lost again!  cry.gif

Finally I decided to switch back to my previous D-Link router. The ping is high, but at least the connection is maintained. Also, ASUS RT-AC68U is freakin expensive..almost RM 700 for a router? Need to wait a few months before I can get that one.  sweat.gif
*
QUOTE(sHawTY @ Feb 27 2014, 09:34 PM)
Save the money bro, the RT-AC68U is 100% worth it with it's extra features.
It may seem expensive at first, but once you bought it, you won't regret it.

You can also get ASUS RT-N66U at RM525 if you think spending RM699 on a router is too much.

If Gigabit LAN is not important to you, you can get ASUS RT-N14UHP for RM249.

TP-Link uses crappy hardware, cheap PCB & rarely update firmware, that's why they're cheap.
Whereas ASUS uses great hardware & regularly updated firmware, that's why they're expensive.
*

true that

@ballistix89 it all boils down to what features and range do you want. if you want just a replacement router for dlink DIR615, Asus RT N12 D1(RM120) is good enough. it doesn't have USB ports, but it performs well even with quite a number of clients. I am using this for my rumah sewa.

the RT-N14UHP is also a very good performer with good range and extra features like usb support. it is 2.4 ghz only, but it can create additional 4 guest SSIDs just like the N12. I bought one for my parents' place at RM275. it also just received another firmware update.

if your clients are just below 10, and your house is not super big. the n12 d1 is more than enough.

you get what you pay thumbup.gif

that being said, if you have extra old routers, you can use them as APs to improve your coverage if you have to cover different floors or for blindspots. if it doesnt support ap mode, disable the DHCP server for these old routers and it'll be an AP too.

Yeah bro...i saw one modem which cost at rm170...cant remember wat model ist it.....it says on the box that it is UNIFI supported....i think d-link if not mistaken.....seems after goin through the forum, the problem might be overheat....might as well buy a new one....as expected from free stuff...aiishhhh
*

if you buy from TM it is RM170. a compatible router from Asus, is available from as cheap as RM120 (RT-N12 D1), a better one at RM275 (RT-N14UHP), and high end ones at 5++ for N66.

if you dont use printer to the router, or not thinking of using the USB for ext HDD, the RTn12 d1 is good enough. not sure about other brand, surveyed for Asus only

If you're willing to add extra bucks to your RM200 budget, get ASUS RT-N14UHP. Very stable & reliable.
But if you're not, get TP-Link TL-WR1043ND.
*
Asus RT-N12-D1 is also a solid performer at around RM 120. Should be adequate for an average household.

not sure if the list there is updated sweat.gif

what's the hottest brand/model for router replacement now? blush.gif

You can also look back a few pages or just search for the keyword router at this thread, there has been multiple recommendations made by users.

Just choose one that fits with your budget and needs.
