Lets clear some cloud what the Fark is Remap
First of all, I need to explain what is ECU (ECM .. whatever name you call it) .. Engine Control Unit .. Engine Control Module ..

Basically it control how the engine works.. how much fuel goes in when u have this much of air .. and the temperature is this .. and what do it do when u press the throttle .. and so on ..

** NOTE .. The ECU will link to the TCM (Transmission control unit - for AUTO CAR) .. but it does not control the Gearbox .. they communicate ..

Basically our ECU contains 1MB of ROM (ROM stands for Read Only Memory) .. actually its EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory).

So what does this 1MB contains of ? it basically contain 2 major info ...
1. The program that control your Engine ..
2. Parameters (more layman term is settings)
Simplied .. So the ECU will tell the engine what to do every now and then. So when your car running at 3000 rpm .. the air temperature is 35C .. your throttle is 30% open .. how much fuel does the engine needs ? it does NOT CALCULATE ON THE FLY .. instead it reads from the MAPPING TABLE @ Parameters @ settings..

The few major settings for our car ..
1. Ignition timing..
2. AFR (Air Fuel Ratio)
3. Mivec timings (Intake and exhaust)..

WHY AM I WRITING THIS ?
Just wanna clear the sky .. some fella will ask .. my car 1.8 hor .. u not give me 2.0 one hor ? .. my car auto hor .. you dun give me manual hor ??

okay. as what i have mention .. I alter the setting @ Parameters.. i dun change the whole ECU software for you .. just the part is required.

Does the map revert back to original when battery die or whatever sheet ?
Answer is NO .. go read up EEPROM . I already mention .. i alter the setting .. we didnt change the program. The setting only know how to read one set of MAP .. hence the ORIGINAL map is being overwrite (I kept the original map with me) .. but it will not be in your ECU anymore.

**EEPROM does not lost its memory when battery is removed.

If i am driving a 1.8 cvt ... does putting in a 2.0 cvt map into it makes it more powerful ?
No .. example .. ignition timing . it tells the engine when to FIRE the air and fuel mixture .. FUEL has a FIX amount of time it required to burn. a 2.0 has a longer stroke compare to a 1.8 .. by placing the 2.0 map to a 1.8 engine .. u are delaying the burn hence u get less power. (This one need to illustrate .. when i have mood i will tell .. lolz)

Summarize.. u cannot put 1.8 -> 2.0 ... Auto --> manual .. or vise versa ..

btw i went to shineway @ sunway area and they are charging quite reasonable for this, using full meguiars products. whole process took 4.5 hours  . while waiting i pangsai-ed 1 time, oh liu 3 times, had my dinner and kap sunway chicks at rock cafe for 2 hours
