According to the law, you need to be REGISTERED WITH BANK NEGARA before you can pinjam duit (and kutip bunga).
Back in the 1970's and 80's, there were some licenses given out. But no more license anymore for the past 30 odd years.
Which means, the vast majority of Ah Longs still operating in Malaysia are operating ILLEGALLY.

seriously mang, ah long is the saviour for those small time hawker. i read this from newspaper i only understand why they existed all the while.
i dont think their major income is lending to gambler and then try to kill them for not repaying loan. their daily biz is to borrow to the poor biz man.
