I have a question to ask here, its about the differences between the weight of Altec Lansing. Anybody here know the material used for making Altec Lansing subwoofer which are master carton and display carton?

I know the weight of master carton is heavier than display carton. This Monday I was decided to order an Altec Lansing FX5051 at lelong. I was went in and ask the pczonecomputer seller. Then he reply me the weight is 20kg, shipping to east malaysia will be very expensive (because i am staying in Miri). He give me the shipping rate RM216.

Later, I go to moresales Malaysia reseller website and ask for the seller. I go in from FX6021 and sent an email to them. Then they reply me, currently FX6021 no stock and the weight of FX5051 is 10kg, therefore shipping rate is around RM80.

Suddenly, I confuse already. I check back the catalogue master carton weight 19kg and display carton weight 9.5kg. I dont understand why have these two different weights. I find dictionary the word master have what other meaning besides the meaning of master like sifoo and the master like postgraduate of university. I still cannot find any answers. Then display also same dont have much others definitions from dictionary.

What I say is just guessing. I go google do research, I am realized that master carton is an original wood get from tree and display carton is a man-made wood which use for making notice board, boxes and so on.

I go ask one of my friend because he is pro about speakers and before he introduce to me Altec Lansing is the best speaker. What he say is both subwoofer either made from master carton or display carton have their difference advantages.

He say something like master carton subwoofer release the bass softer and more powerful, but the bass cannot too soft or too hard and the bass must release accurate. And then he say display carton subwoofer is more on making vibration. The display wood help reflect the sound from woofer and make the bass sound maintain longer.

I still cant get the conclusion which one has better sound quality.............

All Altec Lansing have 2 different weights.

He already mention that old subwoofer heavy than new version subwoofer. Actually it is not old or new version, just the wood which used to made the subwoofer.

45.2pounds = 20.5KG
22.3pounds = 10.11KG

Two different weights because one is made by master wood another more light is made by display wood.

What is your opinion about the sound quality between these two different weights sub?

Actually both also have advantages. Nowadays, most seller sell the display carton version. It is easier to carry and more convenience.

Master carton deliver powerful bass and the bass is softer, but the bass always loud not mean it is nice.

Display carton create vibration, reflecting inside the subwoofer box and shaking the air to produce bass but will absorb some sound that why compare to master carton is a bit smaller bass dimensions.

It is difficult to choose, because if i want listen to soft bass but cannot want the bass make vibration in the same time. I know vibration is quite geng, make everything around are shaking.

This is one of my friend opinion as he used his Altec Lansing for 8 years. It is very good quality because his old 5.1 system still very nice as it has 3D surround.

Today I get my FX5051, I have problem on the speaker. When I listening to songs, I found there have two speakers no function. One is center speakers and another one is rear right speakers. I am using laptop and there have two ways to connect the speaker, one way is just using USB, another way is just using audio jack. Both method still the same problem, the two speakers no sound but the rest is working.

I was tried to plug the unworking speaker to another front left or front right jack, it is working and have sound. But when i plug back to the correct jack position, it is no working.

Oh, I forgot to report in here, actually I have VS4121 which used for 1 year and now I have another FX5051.

You are right, all the seller only sell display carton version even mine also are display carton version. Behind the speaker with a sentence "Made in China". Maybe the investor from US go to China buy the display wood to made their Altec Lansing then sell to Asia.

I was visited baidu.com then go into Baidu knowledge, the China ppl there asking why in China have so few seller are selling Altec Lansing compare with Edifier. Altec Lansing made in China but not sell in China.....

hahaha... all ppl sure ignore me. because i am using FX5051

I am support VS4121 also because I was used it before I change to FX5051.

The different between VS4121 and FX5051 is

VS4121 less treble than FX5051.
FX5051 speaker small but loud and louder than VS4121.
The subwoofer have differences, FX5051 one is deeper than VS4121.
FX5051 still can heard the deep bass vibration when I go out from my room, but I cannot hear the deep bass vibration for VS4121 when I go outside the room unless sit beside the subwoofer.
Both also provide clean sound but VS4121 need do some adjustment from the equalizer and install SRS Audio Sandbox or DFX to improve the sharp of treble. But FX5051 no need do adjustment in the computer because the sound from speaker really clean and sharp enough.
VS4121 is 2.1 cannot fight and FX5051 is 5.1 this is truth.
FX5051 just plug USB can listen songs already, but VS4121 dun have USB.
One thing is good for VS4121, it is running analog tuning more easy to tuning volume, bass and treble but FX5051 is running in electric, everything of volume, bass and treble is connected to computer. I just scare sometimes the computer suddenly turn everything to maximum volume.
And also, FX5051 got hissing sound from the speakers but VS4121 dun have. The subwoofer for FX5051 got low humming sound when turn on the AC power, but VS4121 dun have the low humming sound.

VS4121, dont have hissing sound and low humming electric sound on the subwoofer.

My friend told me, usually the more powerful and larger speakers have louder hissing sound. Just go to some live or concert and look after the speakers, the speakers have louder of "shhhhhhhhhh" hissing sounds.

The subwoofer have a bit low humming because it is electric ground loop affect. But usually you will not realize it if you no concern about it.

Go for FX6021 if your budget is over RM600 and go for CS21 if your budget is below RM500.

Before you give comment, you should realize that is that your MP3 is 320kbps? Is that your 320kbps MP3 is "Stereo" but not "Joint Stereo"? Do you have test the speaker with an original Audio CD? Make sure the song you are testing is loseless quality such like APE, FLAC and WMA Lossless.
Do you turn your VS4121 speaker "bass" to middle and "treble" to maximum? Don't always maximum your "Bass" and please don't let the "bass" cover your song. Make sure you play the song with Windows Media Player 11, enabled all the SRS WOW Effects settings.

I usually play songs with Windows Media Player because it is better than Winamp. I only like to use Windows Media Player because it is the best player, great sound quality output, clean sound and clean bass output and SRS WOW effect make the bass become more powerful and the audio become wider. I did not using any AMS because these programs will make the song you play become worse and dirty.

Below is the setting for VS4121,
Start Windows Media Player 11, go to Now Playing --> Enhancements --> Graphich Equalizer. Do as the setting below.


Go to Quiet Mode, select Medium Difference


Go to SRS WOW Effects, do as settings below


On your VS4121 front right speaker, tune the bass to center and treble to maximum. Play the song and start listening. What is your feel now?

Choose a 320kbps MP3, if better, choose a lossless quality audio to play. Now you listen.

I really dunno what you still need to criticize? The speciality of Altec Lansing is on the satellite speakers but not the subwoofer.

Mine is "hp" laptop, sound card is Conexant AMC Audio.

I notice that model I never seen before. I think this model is 2003 model. The subwoofer looks like a bomb.
That time I still haven't got any powered PC Speakers. My computers are using a RM30+ cheap and broken sound PC speakers that time.
