tarm

Does the Sony Smartwatch 2 have a pedometer and calorie burn function? Can this data be transmitted to any Android?

Is it also splash proof? Submersion won't happen but at least water splash resistance will be a big plus.

It is splash proof, IP57 rating.

as for pedometer i'm not sure, but it do comes with free Runtastic Pro app (im not sure if its related).
*
Thanks for the info !!!

Could you test out the pedometer function (if you find it tongue.gif )

And could you clarify how it gets charged, whether by standard microusb 2 or some proprietary MAKE.BELIEVE stuff?

EDIT: thanks, saw your reply about the cable in Note 3 thread. !!!!! GREAT !!!!!

Will try to find out, altho i'm not really into workout hahaha
*
Well you don't need to workout. An always-on pedometer will count all steps you've taken, while another type needs you to explicitly switch it on via an app or switch. If it's always-on, you should be able to run an app any time that simply tells you "Today you've walked 7000 paces and burned estimate X calories"

Always-on will be good.

Not much love for the Galaxy Gear S ?

A watch that is also a phone....isn't this the tech wet dream for decades?

After seeing the limited number of hands on vids available, I think it's a good thing, albeit the first generation.

Anyone here planning on getting the Gear S? Looks gooding the watch, but not sure bout the batt life ... can tahan more than a day?
*
QUOTE(zhou86 @ Oct 17 2014, 11:22 AM)
I think more than a day will be tough. Because it uses its own 3g as well, and it will consume more batt as compared to the usual BT connection. Definitely have to charge everyday imo.

P/s: Gear S is technically not Android Smartwatch since its a standalone (don't require connection to Android phone) and it runs on Tizen. I guess that's why we don't really discuss the Gear S on this thread.
*
QUOTE(zhou86 @ Oct 18 2014, 11:17 AM)
Nice, do keep us updated. Some first impressions would be nice.
*
I got one and have been posting in Note4 thread.

I use it as a phone for my personal line. With calls, it will last at most 6 hours. With no calls it lasts about 8-10 hours.

I am fine with this as it is functionally about the same as a Nokia N82 minus the camera.

I have read the last few pages of posts, gratz to both tarm and stringfellow for being the first owners of the GWR here. That was actually an option in my list for a wearable sometime later this year.

However, as chance would have it, I got a Gear S. I wrote a review on G+ with quite a number of pics.

I do share tarm's sentiment about expectations. Don't expect too much from a 2" or smaller device on your wrist, which, till very recently, just told you the time of day and the date, plus maybe a compass.

Such a joy (no pun indeed!) to read your Gear S review, and did you realise that your review is the first in depth review of Gear S in the world? All other site mostly only have hands on preview, not actual review of the wearable. Congrats on that bro!

After an almost a week with my GWR, I can safely said it met my current expectation of smartwatch and more. Some might lament lack of speakerphone and ability to talk through watch ala d*** Tracy on the current crop of Android Wear watch, but after my experience with Gear 1, that feature is still far away from being usable for now, with tiny speaker and small battery capacity.

Voice detection for "OK Google" functionality on GWR is better than moto360, and the unassuming design actually helps to avoid it from the prying eyes, unlike moto360.  Battery life has been great so far, and I'm looking forward for the next update from Google to enable watchface API (so the third party watchfaces can deliver better battery life and smaller notification display on it).

Yeah I saw that post too. Surprisingly Malaysia receive the Gear S very early, much earlier even than the US. tongue.gif

Thanks for the support. I wrote that because I was looking around for some indepth user reviews and found none. I thought let's just give it a shot and get more user feedback.....well yeah, it's nice to know something's a world first tongue.gif

I've posted an updated review, part 2, of the Gear S.

One really strange thing is the GPS behaviour

U mobile? But....I don't think you'd want to do any web browsing or internet related stuff for more than 10 mins on such a tiny screen. I certainly do not.

At worst, the battery gives you 8-9 hours of light use with some calls. Do any GPS or browsing activities and it goes down the drain.

I don't do any web browsing with it. Just need it to check for notifications on its own without tether to the phone. Umobile quite attractive. Basic 3G with 500MB quota will do. If need to make calls also for absolute emergencies only.
*
Without an active paired phone, you will not get any notifications, except maybe for SMS.

You need a paired phone for any kind of notifications management, like receiving from Whatsapp, FB etc.

That's why I took a multisim plan, don't need to fuss around for another phone number.

Bro can you try out one thing?

I would like confirmation whether the GPS behaviour is bad or not.

Test the Here app and/or S-Health with location tracking turned on, and see what is the speed of the GPS fix.

Test once with the paired phone on, paired to bluetooth, and once with the phone completely switched off.

Me and 2 others have experienced that the GPS cannot lock if it is not paired via bluetooth to the Gear S.

I also posted in XDA about it.

That's half price or even lower. Why not? Make sure you clean it of the seller's bodily fluids properly.

was too excited too see it online.
bought it assuming it works with non galaxy phone like gear fit.
turned it on.
paired it with G flex/z ultra ...boom...thats it.
unable to further sync anything.
in short. it won't work with non galaxy phone.
hurray..I'm forced to get a Samsung phone just for this..damn..

but this smartwatch phone is gorgeous compared to sw2, g watch , gear fit.

There are some hacks on xda. How much did u get it for?

Can u please test the gps without pairing to a phone?

I say if you really want a fitness android wear watch the sony one is the first of its kind to hv GPS built into the watch so you dont need to bring your phone along with you for a run.... But then again it doesnt hv a heart rate sensor which is just lame ....  In the end this watch is just confused... it wants to be a watch but cant accept standard watch straps ,  it wants to be fitness device but it lacks the hardware other watches have , and that design..... ugh maybe they should just stop making totally square smart watches anymore , looks so outdated

Eh, good price wor. SW3 is the best for fitness.
*
QUOTE(ape @ Nov 8 2014, 10:34 AM)
SW3 dun have heart rate sensor? too bad...got GPS but no heart rate, totally wasted.
*
Might as well take the Gear S then, for approx 100-200 more. Full blown phone as well.

BTW, for ANY Gear S owner (thanks to ravenlost who posted his result) please test your GPS without the phone switched on.

I posted this on XDA, and all the Europeans have been able to have GPS working without the phone.

The same was posted in Note 4 thread.

============

Here are some responses from XDA

They ALL have GPS working WITHOUT the phone.....I think we need to pay a visit to the service center.

Any other Gear S owners please verify?
