Kinda disappointed with the SOD and fake hang issue. Its a software bug that can be recreated, lol at Sony. Really really hope they can do it better. Software wise, Samsung is indeed more mature in development.
I DID NOT EXPERIENCE THIS. because i don't have a reason why i should dislike and untick the optimise backlight setting. its an ignorable issue.
Touchwizz is more mature than Sony's UI, but i think HTC Sense is more mature than TW, and nothing can compare vanilla Android on Nexus.
vanilla nexus> htc sense> TW > sony ui

among your consider list, if you are to pick just one, the answer is obvious, Note 3.. no point to downgrade to HTC One although its a very good phone. iphone 5S? better wait for iphone 6, i bet you will ditch 5s when u see iphone 6.. 5s is the experimental 64bit OS, the real one will be on iphone 6. save your money
They is no force to untick that, but not everyone want it and that issue is still a issue, a big bugs.
is it you said it obviously degrade the display? but it doesnt happen with my unit. i just think the light become dimmer and probably less vibrant? but still a very good display.. and is suppose to conserve battery, thats good.
ok. having said this, i'm gonna untick the optimise backlight setting and reboot to experience the bug myself now.
guess what.. i'm gonna keep my XZU until it die.. if i buy another phone later, i'm gonna mount this XZU in my car to become TV/LCD display for car entertainment, as well as GPS. i think it will suite the purpose. who think this is a brilliant idea?

For those not understand what I written previously, here is a better understandably way to bring out the Fake Hang & SOD symptoms.
Set as screenshot below:
Immediate Power Off the Phone.
Turn on the Phone, you will notice after SONY logo, they is a fake hang, it take sometimes before continue.
The phone will became 100% brightness after success load to main launcher. You can only change the screen brightness after un-tick adapt to lighting conditions and move the slider.
Immediate click the power button to lock the screen. SOD (Screen Of Dead) appear.
