Upgrade the RAM. Did you check how many SATA connections it has and how many free drive bays is available?

2GB ram is more than enough for a linux system. Remember it's not a desktop. It is a server so no need to install the linux desktop environment if you don't need it. I used to run my ubuntu with 1GB ram and it is totally sufficient for almost everything I throw at it. I also install XFCE which is a very light desktop envinronment with minimal stuffs.

With 1GB ram, I was running deluge torrent, serviio DLNA server, apache (for serviio gui), samba file sharing, software RAID, a few java apps, vnc server (with XFCE). Until I went and throw in a camera monitoring system. This prove to be slightly overwhelming for my linux box. however, it still can run fine all the apps with some load only. That is even due to partially processor not power enough.

I have HP microserver N36L. You can read about my detailed review on this in my blog. Wow..can't believe my HP microserver is 3 years old already!!!

This is definitely the BEST NAS solution for me. It has gone through few Ubuntu versions. Still running great!

You can install anything on it since it is running full fledge OS. Throw it linux or windows or even something like Openfiler (storage management software like those in NAS). And you can do anything with it. Torrenting, web hosting, XBMC, DLNA server, file sharing and so on.

if that is how you place your HDD, without proper casing and all, of course will die lah. Drives running 24/7 should be properly mounted and ventilated.

If a hdd in Nas is degraded status, when we rma it, is it possible the data be retrieved by the manufacturer?

Rather if we keep biz info on the Nas, and there is a need to rma 1 of the hdd (raid5) is there risk of losing info to 3rd party?

you can try to use a strong magnet to remove all the data. But if you are so scared of your information stolen then just don't RMA. The cost of HDD is so low only compared to your company business.
