what OS should I use to have a custom build OS? that can install this photprism
My current spec I plan to use
HP Slimline Desktop PC 270 Core i3-7100T (Build 6 Aprl 2017) 4GB DDR4 Single channel.. (tried install 32GB DDR4 cant boot) Pre installed Windows 10 Home edition
I didn't know about Netbird before this. Looks like good option if want to connect certain devices without opening many ports, but must have public IP or public domain.
tailscale or netbird are some good options. with tailscale there is a package for pfsense so makes it easier to set it up on the router side if you prefer.
alternatively there is cloudflare tunnels also does not expose ports for remote access. and adds an authentication layer for added protection
for homelab setups you can check techno tim's channel he shows how he does his

have to take into account of shipping and customs.
packaging should be fine because they are renowned for packing very well. so the question is the price for the shipping + customs. And yes they do ship to Malaysia.
They are a better deal for US because free shipping for them but not elsewhere
the recertified which is cheaper than brand new MIGHT be worth it. yes they are used and recertified hence why they resell at a lower price. But some of these could simply just be drives that are resold once they reach a certain time period of a few years. So the enterprise would sell them off regardless whether they have issues or not. so that is what you are most likely buying.
They have a 2 year warranty i believe, so that is something. But if the drive you get is seagate, i'm not sure the rma is covered by seagate, but is by serverpartdeals themselves directly? i'm not sure. If it's seagate, seagate rma is good with free shipping, if not, then you probably have to pay shipping yourself for rma, which could be problematic.

Exactly my thought. $/TB is pretty good with 2y warranty. Only issue is the return process if the drives fail.
May I know where you get your NAS drive from?
shopee. but i recently found out that recertified might not be that bad a deal, so that was why i was doing research on it and found that. so just sharing. i mean, for the same price roughly would you rather get 4tb or a 12tb? (both nas 24/7 drives) put it that way
yes recertified but i think it should be fine if it has some warranty and somebody inspected it before reselling. I've had brand new drives that died within 2-3 years, so it's not much difference in that sense

That’s the thing that’s holding me back. It’s a gamble.
china second hand? i wouldn't risk that. But from a reputable company similar to serverpartdeals i might.

since truecharts have abandoned truenas, i changed my setup so that truenas is only for storage instead of truenas running baremetal and other apps/vms goes on top of it, now i have truenas/ubuntu vm running on top of proxmox
thats incorrect. it was truenas that ditched truecharts it was not worth using truecharts, their packages as badly maintained. Just use docker and get direct from the project on github, copy the docker compose, edit it, then use dockge to deploy it. Easy. Using dockge it can also save your docker compose which is easy to backup.
truenas opted for docker since that is more popular and works out for most people.
but for people that want K3 or other, they still can. a way to do this is via jailmaker. you can then install K3, podman or whatever it is you require.
The default for truenas however is docker. You don't need to run a jail anymore for docker, though you can. Jails are still pretty handy, but for simplicity and if you are using docker, may just be a good idea to use the default.

proxmox is useful if u want to use ur server for more than just truenas. thats one option, personally i never tried that, but i didn't hear bad things about it. just that it's just an additional complexity to the setup

its mutual abandonment. earlier this year ix planned to remove k3s from future versions, so truecharts stopped updating their packages for truenas btw, i'm using scale not core. and truenas is only for hosting media files used for plex moving from bare metal truenas to proxmox and then truenas+ubuntu server makes managing them much easier
im using dragonfish with jailmaker for my dockers.
tried eel, but it broke my jailmaker from working (but stux who tested it said it worked for him). stux video is how to migrate from jailmaker to truenas native docker support.
jailmaker ended support, so may have to do that in future.
right now eel is release candidate, i would not recommend it just yet.
