Today was the 1st time in 5 months since i turned on my PS3, because everytime i turn it on it asks me to update, so i just leave it there for few hours and went out, in the end it updated but i never played it, so same story goes on few weeks after that. So today i decided to look around see anything new, yes another new update, and after the update i pop in the Uncharted 3 i wanted to play for the past 4 months and yes it asked for another 300mb update. Then there's this $10 coupon from Sony that went expired on May, went into PSN Store to check new trailers etc, i don't know how many times Sony revamped the PSN store but it's still such a chore to just get in, browse the store i realize consoles so outdated.
I notice nowdays many older games from NES to PS2 are available for PS3, however i can't help thinking with the arrivial of PS4 and the incompatibility of PS3 games, how many times does a person actually buy a copy of the same game? Say Metal Gear Solid, up from PS1 to rerelease on PSN, HD Collection & Legacy Collection, they'll probably release the same game on PS4. Since it's old system why can't they just implement global emulator like PC so a person buys 1 copy off PSN and can replay it on his PS3, PS4 & PS5? With PC games you only need to buy the game once (or twice like after 30 years).
I also have a Xbox360 that i haven't played much since i switched to PC. Not just because of the Superior graphics but also the controls/flexibility & more importantly great mods. I felt with the PC version you get everything you'll need, even when there's a XboxOne or XboxTwo release in the future the PC version will still be superior just like Tomb Raider, Silent Hill series because they are capable to adapt to newer more advance systems and utilize the advantage.
My Wii had been doing nothing for the past 9 months. Though there's still games i wanted to play on it i just felt lazy. Don't think i will ever get a Wii-U as i don't think i can follow up with it.
In the end the current consoles just give me an impression that alot of effort needs to be taken just to play it, since you can't ignore updates, have no control over the bandwidth it utilizes, can't retry after errors, many saves can't be copied exchanged, felt like unless you take more time & effort you are stucked with your unit, unlike those days where you just bring a cart or memory card to continue your game.
Back then Consoles has always been the leader when it comes down to graphic performance & fun factors, only the super expensive PC cards can be equal to them, not anymore, nowadays next gen consoles already lost to current PC when it comes to graphics, so the only reason one would buy a next gen console would be for the convenience (really???), exclusive games (not that many) & ease of use (issit?) & to be part of the gadget groups.
Back then when PS2, PS3 were launched it gave alot of attention, nowadays PS4, XboxOne is just:"meh, another new gen console". Since they can't beat modern PC in terms of performance, they have to rely more on exclusives.
Some trends i dislike since the introduction of current gen consoles (including PC):
1.Trophies: Make gaming become like a core for those trophy seekers and annoy those that don't give a sxxx about it.
2.DLC: Giving companies a new path to make big profit (or cheat customers out of it) out of small insignificant contents. They never cut the price for DLCs even if it's 5 years old, end up full game cheaper than DLC.
3.Updates: Allow companies to ease off the debugging/QC issues and let users do the work because they can keep patching a 5 year old game, at the expense of customer's time & bandwidth.
4.Digital games: Something that cannot be resold, rarely go on discounts & bargains. Hardly any cheaper than Disc games during launch, and more expensive than disc games when old.
5.Avatars/Wallpaper and all those useless stuff: Sold at Real price.
6.Ranking system on MP: Playing online game is like climbing the corporate ladder nowadays, you start at bottom and work hard to make your way up. Many games force you into matchmaking servers. And most online lobby system for consoles is so bad it makes a good game bad (killzone 3?).
7.Introduction of Online Pass: $9.99 just so you can play online.
Most of these trends are just ways to keep console players to continue paying, and spend more time & effort playing. Updates & maps used to be free for PC, but thanks to Consoles, not anymore since they need to be fair to console fans. Good thing is at least online still free for PC.
I might still get a PS4 just for MGSV & GT6 and a few but only because they aren't available on PC. But my interest in Console have dropped from 90% to 15%.
Right now i felt quite bad for the systems i have & the money i've spent, maybe they would have in better hands if they were owned by small kids who can cherish them more than i do, but it's just too much money to simply give away to.
Getting Tired of Consoles...
