i would say its awesome!

If you have the chance to, go for it!

I was actually the MIS ( Management Information System ) asst manager, so it was somewhat of a mix of front end and back end job. Front end meaning u interact with the guests and backend being hey all the IT infrastructure and such.

If ur a good a$$ kisser (of the guests, that is lol ) you can earn some serious extra dough(tips) and its nice to interact with other nationalities, discover something new everyday..plus the hotel has so many departments, hsekeeping, banquet etc and IT systems are everywhere, you get to mingle with the staff as well. Something like an all access pass to the departments, its good if you're the social and talkative type..but hey, if you're not its a good to sharpen your PR skills smile.gif

but all is not green, its not all pros anyway...long working hrs..a hotel is 24/7 anyway! support calls at 3am...crappy guests who yell and throw things at you..politics..

All in all its still worth it ( pending on what designation lah), was there for about 1year ++..still in the ripe young age here, wouldnt wanna be too comfy in a position..

And one major plus point, front office ladies are hawt!! biggrin.gif (for you hot red blooded young males out there!) haha

Hiye,
I was a front office asst manager in one of the 5stars hotel at the Bukit Bintang area... What I can say from my experience are it was really hard work, torturing and the pay suck... Many who join the hotel line would say they love to meet ppl and all tht but after a year or two their view will definitely change... If you enjoy meeting unreasonable and stupid ppl from around the world, then the hotel line is for you... Or else please spare yourself the misery and join some other line of work...

No I'm actually a computer graduate.. My asst GM asked me why I wanted to join the service industry and I told her things like I like meeting ppl, hate sitting in front of the PC the whole day and all tht...

Ended up I had to sit in front of the PC the whole day tracking the room blockings and reservation and I ended up hating meeting ppl almost immediately after I met my first stupid customer...

I'm no longer in the hotel line now.. Resigned early this year to join a design company... No regrets though because I really learned a lot from my 2 years there..

Too many till I don't bother keeping count la... Most of the staffs there hate Singaporeans and Arabs but for me they are all the same.. You'll find unreasonable people from anywhere.. I've met dumb customer from everywhere including our own Malaysian but I'm used to it already I guess...

I'm ok with fussy customers because they actually pay the amount of money to enjoy the 5stars service... It's the dumb unreasonable ones that I can't stand... Idiots who can't find parking spots la, hotel too big la, room not same quality with whichever hotel they've stayed in before la... And being a chinaman company you'll definitely meet people who claim they know the owner of the hotel, the GM or whoever minister that crossed their mind... Can't stand stupid people who have to sell others name to carry themselves around...

Hi,

I've worked in a 4-star hotel within golden triangle before. I must say the experience are definitely valuable till this moment, to me. Especially when you're having the chance to travel around. For instance, MATTA fair in Singapore. Whereby, you can get to meet quite a number of people within the same industry.

Yes, employees have to go through the back door, instead of main door.

You are human, but in the hotel management industry you are nothing. You have no rights. The guests are always what comes first. And thus, you are only there to serve them.

Yeah la it's due to security reasons actually... It's not called back door la it's the staff entrance... That's where you punch in and out everyday and go through the security check... The hotel is very particular about this because they are afraid the staff might steal things from the hotel or worse from the in-house guests...

No point going through the front door anyway cause all the offices are located at the back... U have to change into your uniforms at the locker room and all that so it's more convenient actually going in from the staff entrance...

I have to agree with bahgger especially if you work under scary cat bosses who are so obsessed with keeping all the guests happy even when they're being totally unreasonable... It'll always be the staff's fault no matter what...

An incident happened to my ex-colleague just recently... There's this stupid auntie who demanded for a non-smoking room but due to high occupancy my friend explained nicely to her that we don't have it anymore... See see this auntie is a total idiot and the worse part is she knows the owner of the hotel... So she shouted at my friend and threatened her that she'll never work in another hotel ever again... The hotel owner really called the GM after receiving the complaint and now my friend is suspended from work... Poor girl explained to her nicely somemore and there were so many witnesses... Even my GM pity her but can't do anything cause it's out of his control and the hotel owner is a total idiot...
