JPA scholar here, nearing the 1-year-no-job-offer and suddenly got the email to do PTD exam. It’s irrelevant to the course I took in the UK.  doh.gif I regret coming back to Malaysia because job prospects overseas are better. In Malaysia, I see many uneducated civil servants in my field of interest and it’ll be too hard to change their attitude because they are not passionate enough. I got myself into NGOs and organisations closely related to the government which is how I got to see a little. There’s a job opening in state government and I submitted my application. They haven’t even looked at it and it has been months. I regret returning to Malaysia.

Note: No Malaysian private sector has the kind of job I want, unless you’re talking about developed countries like UK and US where they privatise and commercialise humanities sector, with its own set of problems but still, better than Malaysia.

But it’s hard to land a job in UK right ? For non Briton

Hey all,

I'm one of those who were meant to take the May exam but could not log on. As luck would have it, the rescheduled exam was at the same time as I was flying back to Malaysia. I called SPA up and asked if I could take the exam just an hour later, and they said no. (Which is a bit stupid, because anyone who wants to cheat on that exam can already do so easily, and if they cared at all they would make this an invigilated exam like just about every other country I know does.) Wasn't about to skip flight for some rubbish test that I probably would not be able to log on to take anyway, so that was that. Thing is, I still want to take the test and go through the process and join the government. (Yes, despite knowing that the system is incompetent, corrupt, and filled with a bunch of stooges who could best serve the country by slumping over their desks dead.) So, how? Wait till the next recruitment cycle, whenever that is? There's very little info on the SPA website (and I cannot bear to spend much time on that site, because omg the writing quality), and as usual LYN folks seem to know more. So please, enlighten me. And, where do you guys get previous test questions? The cikgu in me is curious to see the questions they ask.

Thank you for your time!

No way other than signing up on SPA8i and make sure you choose PTD as one of the choices. Keep your contact info up to date, check your emails, and follow their official facebook page. If they decide to go for another round of recruitment, they'll 1) announce on Facebook, 2) send you an SMS, and 3) send you an email with all the login details.

There's a few places where you can get previous questions and discuss with candidates. There's usually even ex candidates & current PTDs who stay on and help out. Search for facebook groups, there are a few. Some of these do help out but you have to pay for their e-book. Up to you, but free info is there if you spend a bit of time searching. For me the most useful was the Telegram group, there was 11k members by the time I left. Scroll up, I think the link was posted on this thread some time ago.

SPA will not be able to (or won't) tell you if and when there is another recruitment cycle, so I hope you have other means of income in the meantime. If you don't care what job, as long as it's the government, do also check out SPA postings on their Facebook page as they post all government job vacancies there. Pekerja Sambilan Harian jobs should be easy to get, and it's a good way to get a foot in the door because they like to just absorb you afterwards.

it's great that you want to join the government - and do note that not everyone is inefficient and not all of the work is a slog. It takes time to change and it starts with an open mind.

Good luck!

Thanks for this really helpful reply. Did not know about Pekerja Sambilan Harian gigs, might be a better path. And thanks for pointing me to the SPA Facebook page. It's got a lot more info than the website (although a pain for non-Facebook users to scroll thru). Looks like I need to get on Telegram.

Yes, I'll need to work on that open mind. I used to work with some Wisma Putra types and all I can say is, ugh. But will remind myself that there are good folks in govt who need some kawan. :)

Thanks again!

Mind to ask, are all government jobs recruited via SPA8i as the only channel? i noticed in some states, there are state government posts that shares the grading and salary scheme of federal and they seem to have their own state government job portals.

This is what I found on the SPA website: Berdasarkan peraturan sekarang, Kementerian/Jabatan dan Pentadbiran Negeri akan melaporkan kekosongan jawatan kepada Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia untuk membuat pengisian.
So yes it seems that SPA does the recruitment process, but the advertising channels could be done by both SPA and the state.

There are 3 types of Gov Service...Federal, State and Badan Berkanun.

Federal is by SPA..and will be posted to federal agencies in state or state Government which are not Negeri-negeri Melayu Tidak Bersekutu.

so states likes Johor, Kelantan etc have their own civil service scheme..

Just curious - what are the prospects of a PTD for experienced hires? Are they still expected to start at the minimum salary, or does the experience factor in?

I think yes still hiring but mostly contract basis and pekerja sambilan harian.
Sad to say I went to 3 interviews (diff years) for the PTD post but was unsuccessful. Passed all exams and even the camp, just not the interview.
My friend (junior) went on only 1 time and got hired. lol
