I'm not referring to speakers where we play music . I'm referring to the earpiece we put our ear 2 to listen to calls .
And as for writing capability , how am I a left hander gonna write from left to right without touching the screen as it doesn't response if I accidentally rest my palm on it . 5 mins ? 10 mins ? I'm sorry but I'm spoilt by Note series .
*
Oh.... left handers will have problems with writing on the XZU?

man. i hated the heat issue so very much.

Well Sony is following the same design philosophy across the Z family, and everyone's also annoyed that they gave the flimsy excuse of skimping on the LED flash to fit the thinness.... rolleyes.gif

And both the Z and ZU share the glass back. I guess you will find hotspots on your phone.

The writing using stylus so far I can only use pencil. It doesn't work with my old ballpen n plastic stylus
You can only use Sony keyboard n must select write mode n write on the pad. I see no point using it as it is too troublesome to invoke it.  You need to write slowly to have accurate capture. I rate it hopeless to me.
At first I thought can just write straightaway on any note app without all these constraints

Shucks. ...not like the Note 2 eh?

Note 2 stylus is completely different class.  An insult to Note2 to even compare
*
QUOTE(shockk @ Jul 28 2013, 12:01 AM)
This was my biggest worry of all, and unfortunately it is true after what you said. Many reviews and hands-on so far did not even mention this issue. I guess this is another gimmick for the ZU and everybody would have thought they would be at least equal to Note 2's stylus performance, or better since this one allows pencil usage. Now it all boils down to the thinness of the phone, the display quality, screen size, waterproofing and blazing performance as the things going for it, but not sure if these are enough. Hmmm. Thanks for highlighting this Benny!
*
QUOTE(Andrewtst @ Jul 28 2013, 12:29 AM)
So seems the weakness is the input via pen, hope Sony can improve in near firmware even though I believe I will not frequent use it but some user might need it.

As for loud speaker, I never put high hope on it.
*
Well I would say that was the first thing I looked out for ever since they started showing videos. @deddo kindly did the demo on failed palm rejection for us all yesterday, and IINM, he is the first person in the world to do it. Nobody else has picked up on this in the West since they haven't gotten their hands on it, and I think the HK review site only did conductive stylus testing without considering palm rejection either.

Fail on writing as a gimmick, but otherwise useful as a smaller-than-7-inch-device.

I do not think firmware will solve the palm rejection as it has to do with the digitizer hardware differentiating between 2 conductive areas.

A Wacom digitizer can differentiate between the resonant stylus vs your body's resistance, and this is, IMHO, not present in the XZU digitizer.

Thank you uncle for your resounding vote for the Note 2 stylus.

i read note3 will comeout with 3 variant 5.5, 5.7 and 5.9
but given sammie usual style...
i speculate 5.7 will get sd800... 5.5 and 5.9 will get sd600 sad.gif

i think i better stay wit 6.3 for now

For those who value stylus input the zu doesn't cut it at all. I tested it too.

Apart from this if u want a big media consumption device it's fine.

There's 2 reason to use stylus for normal user:-

1) Sign PDF document (very seldom unless you're businessman)
2) Internet browsing (can hover like mouse)

Other than that, stylus is for artist to do drawing.  sweat.gif
*
1) jotting short notes during calls n meetings. The note2 CAN take notes during hour long meetings using s note or handy note by scribbling just like normal paper.

Pdf signing is not used unless legally recognized.

I already put some notes at 1st page regarding this issue.

As I say above, smartphone market become very competitive and Samsung is the one to beat. Note3 is real challenger. That's why they advertised pencil writing. They hope to capture stylus phablet market from Note3.
*
My take on the stylus issue is that nobody actually tested palm rejection in any review so far. Uncles' review and deddo's are probably world firsts (Marehsia boleh !!!!)

And if you consider that using 2 point touch in most UI actions is supposed to mean zoom or pinch or scroll, you will never get any input with 2 points touching the screen. It is also the same in Note 2 when you have to use 2 fingers to sketch. With the S-pen, it will ignore your finger/palm and use the stylus as input.

However, palm rejection may (BIG may) be addressed by new firmware, although you have to consider Microsoft tried this for many years, and palm rejection ultimately ended up being handled by active digitizers which can differentiate active stylus input vs body capacitance.

In the case of the XZ, the CONDUCTIVE stylus you have to use is using your body's capacitance to "power" the stylus, so to the digitizer it will still "see" 2 finger touches, so I do not know if ever any kind of firmware update will fix this.

The only good thing is they managed to bring down the detection area from 4mm for standard capacitive screen to 1mm on their screen.

I'm not sure why the huge fuss over the handwriting recognition input when the stock android keyboard or swiftkey is so accurate and efficient in text prediction, I wonder if that feature is really needed at all or simply another nice to have 'party trick' feature
*
QUOTE(gogo2 @ Jul 29 2013, 04:19 PM)
if u advertise it (with pencil writing) like its a must have feature , make sure it works like charm. Galaxy Note is awesome and everyone bought it feel satisfy because it work like as advertised.
*
QUOTE(shockk @ Jul 29 2013, 04:33 PM)
You have a point there. I seriously wouldn't bother with handwriting recognition now. Swiftkey always does it for me.

However, the ability to draw / sketch over photos is quite useful in certain business line, and even leisure projects involving groups. Sony's tech that allows pencil or large-tipped ordinary pen usage makes convenient and negates the need to keep a stylus always with you.
*
Well, the issue is not really handwriting recognition, that still sucks (badly or not so badly) whatever the platform. The issue is actually to do with the sales proposition that you can use anything as a stylus, and the message that it's supposed to improve your productivity.

See, I believe I was the first to raise the point of proper stylus use where you use the screen like a piece of paper. I remarked that every video FROM SONY ever shown that shows the handwriting, you can observe that the model always holds the hand ABOVE the screen. You can verify this by checking every video of the XZU out there.

And from all the current reviews and unboxing etc, they all test the stylus function as an afterthough like "gee, I can use a normal pencil to write!!!" and then they too write holding the hand ABOVE the screen. Whether it's a directive from Sony or because they never used a stylus with their other phones I don't know, but I'm only saying that the stylus functionality is badly borked and it should not be advertised as a prominent feature, since this does not really distinguish it from other capacitive screens.

Note series advertised the stylus functionality as a major feature and as gogo2 said, it works out of the box properly.

My 2 sen is that no firmware update will solve the palm rejection on the XZU.

The demo video shows you can write n even sketch on top of display without using the write pad
There was one even showing scribbling stuffs onto a image
Maybe all these will come in future updates
*
Image overlay or whatever draw/sketch/write feature is fine.

My main gripe is the palm rejection. Whatever you want to write/scribble has to be done with your palm above the screen. And you need to have some correctly conductive writing instrument handy.

Personally I find the device too thin.

Well if the stylus input improves and the sketch app can be treated like a piece of paper, it will be interesting.

However it looks like u need to carry a standard lead pencil around to make it work properly. My concern is still proper palm rejection. Andrew said the stylus wont work if u have a finger or palm on the screen.

Anyone experienced XZU's black screen after trying to recover from wake up (not responsive at all)? I tried to press the power few times but the screen is not responding, i can still hear the message coming in and when i call using another phone, it rang ... but i can't do anything...

PLEASE HELP~~~

Backlight died? Happened before to my other device. Stare closely at the screen, you may be able to see faint images of your app icons. If this is the case, backlight died.... force restart a few times see if it gets "fixed"

Well, for a brand new device and this to happen....

it will depends on the battery capacity. like sony XZU have 3000mah battery, normal charging rate is 1.5A (0.5C). if you want fast charging, you actually can charge the battery at 3A (1C), it will also depends whether the battery is supporting fast charging at 3A. You don't need to know all this limitation because the phone has IC to control the charging rate.

sorry for being a bit technical here... hope this will help everyone on their beloved gadget.
*
I think some will welcome your technical explanations. Doesn't the Snapdragon have something called Fastcharge which was disabled on the HTC1? Don't know if it's enabled for the XZU.

It seems that because it is advertised as water proof, people tend to get a little more callous with their devices and allow spills to happen, then they go wash it. Several cases of water leak happened in the XZ thread due to washing, and I suspect the seals somehow popped open allowing water ingress.

One guy went swimming with his S4 Active and water went in as well......

I'd say water and electronics should never mix except for accidents.
