If I'm studying form 6, what are the things should I be concern when preferring university?

Please give some suggestions and stories about universities that are related to maths course

My target are:
1) University in KL
2) Take for Mathematics courses in either teaching or business
3) Public universities (if possible)

As a person who done Maths myself - I can't help but asking you - why Maths? I hope you answer something along the line of 'passion' and 'interest' and 'intellectual curiosity' or something.

Are you doing further maths in F6? Do keep in mind university level Math is nothing like all the math you've learned in your 10+ years prior to it. It's all about writing proofs, deriving theorems and lemmas, and basically inventing/creating new theorems/proofs n stuff. It's all about brain work - creativity, curiosity and I believe a high degree of IQ...

Just to give you an idea - I have coursemates all around me who aced F6 maths (A, or the worst, A-) failing university maths like nobody's business. And, many might dispute - but my personal experience was this - I had a minor in Computer Science, done high level courses in Business/Finance/Economics - Still, Math is by far the hardest of them all. I can spend very little time doing Business/Social Sciences courses and yet still get a perfect score for them, but not maths. Math is something you sit whole day in library but you possibly might not understand a single f out of the text at all kind of subject.

lol - on the bright side - I believe if you can do Math, you can do most of other things. And if your ambition is on Math itself, cracking a theorem/ figuring out proofs etc are really really awesome. The fantastic rewarding feeling is ... really good.

Yes, why Mathematics indeed! Do numbers excite you? Do Mathematical theorems pique your interest? Most importantly, how much do you know about university Mathematics and are you passionate about it?

Say you stumbled on a theorem, will you do background reading on it and try to prove it on your own or, would you wait for someone else to explain it to you? In fact, do you like Mathematics because you seem to grasp the subject very quickly in secondary school and aced all the exams?

Personal experience dictates that one shouldn't do Maths unless they possess a high aptitude for it.

UTAR quiet good in Math courses and it campuses located at Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. Not sure how many math lab inside there.

I will not suggest you to do Actuarial Science.

I will suggest you to do Finance Mathematics. This course is mix of Mathematics and Finance. Prospect of Finance Math student is better than Actuarial Science, and you will done well if compare to those who only study Finance student.

Anyway, Math course is not a easy path.

I .. bet to differ again ... in order for anyone to really apply the knowledge learn from financial mathematics course.. You gotta be - extremely smart and excellent at this field, and (no offence to UTAR) come from a very reputable/prestigious university. Lots of jobs in the banking & finance field wouldn't be using the quant knowledge you learn from Fin.maths course. In fact, in Malaysia, I think the number of jobs really needing a financial maths grad is very very limited. And you are contesting the job offer with people from exceptional backgrounds.

And, chances are - you will be expected to go on to do Masters/ PHD in this field .. not sure if the thread starter is prepared for that ?

If financial maths is what the thread starter looking for - do economics instead. Much easier to get a first class with that than maths. Higher chance of being employed as well .

Yea... I do have passion... Hm... I'm still in the beginning of form 6, I can tell maths is hard... So, I just put my back-up in business... Since I only can get As in calculation subject... I guess that's what I got... Thanks for sharing your experience... We don't have further maths... We only got Maths management and maths technology... I'm taking Math (M) only

I'm not extremely smart type of girl, I just easy catch up the theorems taught by teacher and needed to guide most of the time... Well, I do learning economic, business and maths M in form 6, I will consider about econ and maths too... for now, econ is quite easy too

UKM is good..but it's in S'gor, not kl

anyhow, math is a good course.
i am indeed a math grad & got a 1st class.

If this is the case then university Mathematics may not be suitable for you. Do not be discouraged by my words though. See if this book interests you:

A very Short Introduction to Mathematics by Tim Gowers.

Read it then decide of you want to do Mathematics at university. Good luck!

my concentrations last time was more on applied maths - numerical methods and game theory - much less abstract than things like number or group theory. Those... kills brain cells much faster I would believe.. lol
