u don't need to understand anything in this movie, the ONLY purpose of this movie is JUST TO WATCH TOM CRUISE DIE REPEATEDLY.......

It was explained at the start of the movie..

he was suppose to go film the war in the front line, but because he tried to run away from the mission, the commander throw him into the war to fight as a punishment

Cruise is the military PR guy, so the general wants Cruise to be in the thick of action to 'market' the war

Surely the military has many PR guys.

Surprised at numerous good reviews for the film. Personally would give it a 2/5, good action scenes but lack of coherent storyline and character development. A lot of things left unexplained, like why Cage was literally sent to die when he's effective as the PR. Also, the ending is inconsistent and senseless.
Either expectations are low to begin with or movie audiences nowadays don't take much to amuse them. And to compare this with Inception is just insulting to Nolan's excellent movie.

as previous poster say, he is the face of the media representing the military.

Commander want ppl to see the war in the frontline, so send cruise to be the MC. Something like showing he is brave to the public blah blah, dun need to fight

Yeah...plus the military thought that Operation Dawnfall will be a success for humanity.
That's why the general has no problem forcing Cruise to join.

No one expects it to turn out a slaughter.

i think it's enough for this to remain as it is. The novelty was watching him dying, live , dying , live and throw in a good measure of action.

Can't see 2 movie of the same thing... a repeat..
