Your friend bought a netbook, not a notebook.

Netbook is low end laptop with a slower CPU (usually is Intel's Atom processor)

Netbook is a slow machine so it is better to be run on Windows 7 Starter which is less feature and run smoother or faster.

What application or software that he has problem to install?

Netbook can't run graphic intense games and it also can't run program such as Photoshop and Autocad.

Netbook is mean for lightweight work like Microsoft Office works and Internet surfing.
