Yup. If you're going to gig..... you have to go with more wattage then 30w. UNLESS you're giging in SMALL venues like...... I dunno..... classrooms.

Wow..... just realized I now belong in the Valvetronics club, thanks to my Tonelab SE!!!
And -YS-.... If you do have the cash, then the AD50vt would be a good, safe bet because you never know if you're gonna gig with it...... But if your question is, is the 30watter good enough for your practise and maybe some SMALL gigs.... then yes. It's good enough. I just came back from CK and it looks like they're going to be bringing in more stock, that's why clearing up the old ones like the Tonelab SE. So hang in there.... they'll be bringing the 50s soon..... |

I have ALWAYS recommended the Vox AD series for beginners lah..... check the previous posts......
It's only if players want a much more "metal" amp, then I would recommend the Marshall AVT series...... Sad but true...... the Vox AD series is no match to the Marshall AVT when it comes to full on Metal sounds...... sure, you can coax the little AD to be a metal amp, but the Marshall does it so well out of the box already..... |

Yeah..... It's the twin pedals with the Tube....
My only other option if I wanted to get a new pedal board was the Zoom 9.2tt... but I have 2 Zoom pedals and they are both semi broken AND their tone still wasn't up to par. I've read ALOT of good reviews for the Tonelab SE AND it was on offer, so I got it. Samples coming soon..... Maybe after next week...... Deadline for final assignments is this 2 weeks....... working like mad.... no time to play with the Tonelab SE....... |

In case you haven't read the guitar phreaks thread, I decided that the Tonelab SE already lived up to my expectations and won't be needing a Marshall AVT150x after all...... The crunch that was found in the Tonelab SE is basically the same one I found in the Marshall AVT150x....
Yes.... that little Tube does make ALL the difference. So I can safely say, that the Tonelab SE is an AMAZING piece of equiptment. It has that nice warm crunch that I was always looking for and has some amazing effects in it. But not quite happy with the UniVibe and Pitch Shifter. Might buy a Rotovibe and a Digitech Whammy.... WOW.... that makes it 5 expression pedals!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will be posting some sample clips in a few weeks time, when I'm OFFICIALLY on holiday. I didn't really experiment with the Orange Model. Just pushing the Marshalls to the limit. Still dialing in that metal Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier tone....

It sounds waaaaaaaay too sharp. There's no way of adjusting it. Trying to get Tom Morello's sound.... almost impossible. In fact, alot of people in the Tonelab Forums also can't get that sound.
Actually...... my Zoom GFX-5 Pitch Shifter sounded better! EDIT: I found out why. It doesn't have "intelligent" pitch shifting...... meaning that it tracks along with your playing and harmonizes with the notes diatonically (within the scale/key) This post has been edited by blacktrix: Sep 29 2006, 08:35 AM |

I know that Celestion Greenbacks are pretty popular.
I'd rather go for the EVM-12L Black Label for Metal. |

Yup. I'm now officially part of the club with the new 15VT!
I have to say, all 22 amps really have different personalities and not just "modded" versions of each........ |

I'm absolutely in LOVE with the AC15 amp model! Turn down the gain, and I get great cleans. Pump up the gain and it's the classic crunch I crave so much!
This little one is getting more use then my big Marshall at the moment |

It's apples and oranges really..... The microcube is meant to be a small practice amp that is portable enough to carry any where you go. The Vox AD, XT and VT series are meant as amps that usually stays put with lots of options to choose from. A more direct comparison would be the Microcube VS the Vox DA5 portable amp.
The Roland series to me has better heavy metal tones..... that includes the Cube 30. The Vox to me sounds better suited to classic rock, but the new XT and VT amps have some damn good heavy metal tones as well. I can get some great mid-scooped High Gain distortion with the VT. It all falls into personal preference really. I use more crunch and classic rock tones which the Microcube sadly lacks in that department. I just personally love the valve tone. Also, the Vox amps allows you to set presets, making it much easier to get your favorite settings. The optional footswitch is recommended if you plan to do alot of switching. If you're happy with your microcube and serves your needs, by all means, stick with your microcube. But if you want to perhaps jam with other friends or want to expand your tone, then yes, the upgrade to a proper AD, XT or VT amp would be very much worth the money. |
