Aldershot Town forges new deal with Chelsea FC

It's official! The Aldershot Town takeover saga is officially over.

As of 7.30pm on Tuesday (July 30), the club finally came out of administration after the ongoing takeover deal – fronted by former chairman Shahid Azeem and backed by directors Tony Knights, John Leppard and Russ Howell – at last got the full seal of approval.

And in a shock admission, Azeem revealed to the News & Mail that an unlikely third party had stepped forward to play a pivotal role in giving the cash-stricken club a new lease of life – Premier League giants Chelsea.

The Shots have pulled off a lucrative two-year agreement to stage no fewer than 25 of Chelsea’s Under 21 and Under 19 matches this season – including all group stage games for the Blues' Under 19 European Championship campaign – meaning high-profile manager Jose Mourinho could be a regular visitor at the EBB Stadium next season.

"It’s a fantastic deal," Azeem told the News & Mail. "We could not have asked for anything more.

"I’m a huge Chelsea fan since the 1970s and it’s a dream come true to be associated with them. They wanted to support the consortium in its bid to save the club and they believed in our vision.

"As well as contributing incremental revenue, this initiative allows us to open our doors to existing and potential new supporters to see Premier League players along with Chelsea’s potential stars of the future."

He said it had been a "long, hard process" since the club went into adminstration in May after being relegated from the Football League.

Azeem has also heaped special praise for the work of Rushmoor Borough Council in keeping the club alive by signing over the lease for the EBB Stadium, helping to appease creditors and giving the Chelsea deal the go-ahead.

One of the new board’s first appointments is expected to be the return of ex-Aldershot and Chelsea favourite Darren Barnard as the new Head of Academy.

Indeed, already the club are urging youngsters, aged 16-18, who left the Academy in the summer to return for the new season after Crawley Town’s plans to take over the youth structure were dramatically scrapped last week.
