Currently I'm paying ~rm130 each month to Astro, but it is mainly for my mother who likes to watch the Dynasty package for the chinese programs. feel like a waste la, if can cut it can save ~1,500 a year. got any idea that i can cut astro but still let my mother watch those TVB and oldies programs?

Sorry 512k broadband its too slow to play hd video. You need at least 2m to support the streaming. Btw you are gping to terminated your astro I think its good to upgrade your speed to 4mbps if available.  Mk808 can be purchase online I buy mine from ebay. You may buy from qoo10 and other onpine shopping website as well.

hi bro, to get 4mbps, should i go for unifi? what price did you pay for mk808? did you get the air mouse too?

4mb streamyx is enough to stream most of the program. but of coz faster the better. I pay SGD55 for MK808 ver 1,6 duo core, i heard quad-core processor is on sales so you may check it out. Recommended to buy wireless mouse (any brand) I'm using logitech wireless mouse (SDG16) . Air mouse is very troublesome in my view.

hi, thanks very much for your info. would like to know if i want to get 4MB, steramyx or unifi which one is better in terms of price and actual performance?

i am also reading the following 2 threads:

Skybox...effectiveness?https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2723454/
Dreambox DM800HDhttps://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1501258

to me, there seems to be two alternatives to astro:

1) use skybox/openBox/dreamBox

- pros: no annual fees, no need astro dish, will not be affected by changes made by astro

- cons: need faster internet, not easy to use by old people

2) use Android MK808

- pros: easy to use by old people, plug-n-play, 512kbps is enough

- cons: need annual fees (rm250?), will be affected by astro if they change their decoder/card.

I read that "Once Astro completed the free Beyond decoder/smart card replacement, that's the end of it unless someone can decode the new Beyond smart card which is locked to one decoder only." -- and this might happen at early 2014 - can anyone confirm it? shakehead.gif

huhu..... please help me to make a choice...... rclxub.gif

rclxms.gif hi all, it is interesting to see all these different solutions coming out these days for us to dump asstro - and i repeat: I HATE asstro with a passion!!! vmad.gif

so far I have shortlisted the following devices based on my reading so far. I wish sifus here can help me to pick one and that's it.

My priorities:
a) Must be able to watch HK and China channels like TVB (for my old mother's sake)
b) Must have an easy to use remote control. for me an air mouse etc. is absolutely no problem, but for my old uneducated mother it could be an issue.

Any comment/advice is WELCOMED! notworthy.gif

I think TVPad2 more suitable for your mom. Got paid channels inside. Easy remote control UI.
Go watch YouTube demo la.

hi, thanks. i have found one guy here who sells it (RM850) :

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2910279

so from what i can see from the videos, this unit has a lot of hk and china channels included already - that's great! i'd like to see how easy it is to add NetFlix and Hulu etc., because they are important to some readers here. Also, the videos never show the remote control in action, so i have no idea is it as easy to use as the asstro remote (this is important for old people). Lastly, is it Android based? if you are using TVPad2, please shed some lights here. biggrin.gif

Hi guys,

Just read through a few of the pages, and got some points.

Just wanted to know,
Any device similar to netflix?
Im not chinese, so i do not want a box full of chinese/mandarin programs as it would be useless to me. I dont mind it there, but dont want a majority of it being chinese..

Yes, netflix is my best option for that case if im not wrong, but im an avid football fan. I have to watch my weekly football games, which is not present in netflix.

Any solution for me?

Oh, it has to be of legal service too biggrin.gif

Thanks!

pls refer to post #265 here: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2855171/+260

The first two items are both Android boxes that can connect to NetFlix and are legal (you will have to pay NetFlix).

RikoMagic MK802 IV Android Stick
HIMEDIA Q5II Smart Android TV Box

And, the first seller listed for each of the products seem to be good in technical advices too based on comments.

hi Phang, i have bought an Android box HiMedia Q5II - not bad a thing. out of all the apps, XBMC is the best, as most of the western movies and tv series can be played quite smoothly most of the time, i have tried watch some 007 movies on it already - no problem at all.

However, when come to Chinese programs, the results are mixed. 风云直播 & AzDrama: most of the time those HK stations (real time) lagged or can't play at all.

May I know do you face the same thing? or is there any settings that i should tweak?
