any advise on the caddy bracket for HDD that can fit into Y500 ?

Lenovo is selling them but inclusive with a 500G HDD and it cost RM400++.

totally not worth it since I have a spare 1TB after replacing it with SSD.

been using for about 2 weeks ++

no problem whatsoever, plus I only play CS 1.6 and watch movies.

P/S: does any shop in lowyat or digital mall sell the 9mm caddy bay that fit into Y500 ? I have a extra 1TB HDD sitting there doing nothing.

just came back from Digital Mall.

apparently the Lenovo shop there sell the HDD Caddy bay casing for $150.

but have to preorder from them, they will order the casing from Lenovo China.

is abit more expensive but consider it will guarantee work with Y series model.

I have checked my friend's unit, same score too. So it's normal. If you own a US set, then your score will be higher due to the SSD which improve the performance a lot.  smile.gif
*
i manage to scored 7.2 for my GPU. Local set Y500

and 8.1 for my harddisk (due to intel 520 SSD)

P/S: refer to post 1456 for the screen shot

SC will charge u RM180 for installing W8 in SSD according to forumer.
u can get SSD from resellers and ask them to install W8 for u or DIY urself.  smile.gif

that if you want back the original setting that came preloaded.

I brought my SSD from viewnet and let lowyat Lenovo SC install for me.

they even partition back the recovery so that the one recovery backup software will work.

my steam games doesn't work, must I use Lenovo NVidia driver ?

other things seem okay, even the secure boot manage to solve it.

There's no problem on using y500 either with single gpu or even with sli... both still same.. (I have sli though  whistling.gif )

Webcam works mighty fine, sound card? Not sure.... But sound system is really great.. as I have always said, y500's speaker ROARS!  thumbup.gif

Touchpad no problem. Wifi no problem.... Keyboard no problem.... almost no problems at all for y500..

The only problem with y500 is the short battery life (full charge with sli lasts only 3 hours)..

graphic card is very good, but the sh*tty drivers by nvidia gives my laptop more problems than before... When idle, my laptop's temp increase by itself lol... but bear in mind, this is a driver problem.. not the hardware.. .sticking with the default 311.27 driver that comes with the laptop is quite ok.. .biggrin.gif

but other than that, y500 have no probs at all... smile.gif

the only issue I had was the Bluetooth where after pair with my iPhone, it won't play the song that comes from my phone.

after installing the driver from Lenovo, it solve the issue but the song that play via Bluetooth will get those jerk sound (more like when you stream video and it lag those jerk sound).

I still use back NVidia 327.23 driver since is already certified for Windows 8.1. so far no issue reported since I only play CS 1.6 via steam.

the secure boot issue - user have to go into bios, disable it first (restart) and then enable it back. It will solve the issue that appear on the wall paper.

another thing I found out is that many of software like chrome, steam, winamp, itune and etc etc (have to run the troubleshoot compatibility), then only it will work like previous windows 8.

recently brought this caddy bay from this seller and replace it with my DVD drive.

confirm is working on Y500/Y510 series.

Caddy Bay

below is my configuration, Disk 0 with Intel 520 series SSD and Disk 1 with the stock 1TB Seagate HDD that came with the notebook. One recovery key is working fine though.

technically this is just a temporary bay as i'm still waiting for the caddy bay which I order from Lenovo reseller.

You can always choose alternatives such as Toshiba's or Seagate's hybrid SSHD or WD black square HDD+SSD dual drive.
Or go for an expensive 500gb/1tb samsung 840 evo.

And well, the lack of msata/NGFF factor in local set Y510p is still making me hesitate for it.
Maybe will wait for next Y series instead lol and hope there'll be ngff connector in it.

you could use SSD for OS, software & games,

add another caddy bay with a 1TB or 2TB, there you go.

you can switch around.

unless you want to multitask where you play games and watch movie at the same time.

once you try out SSD.

there is no turning back to HDD, so I would say the money is well spend although is expensive.

though many people suggest Samsung due to it performances.

but I personally suggest Intel due to it reliability. Intel might not be the faster brand in the market but the RMA case is severely lower compare to most of the brand.

120G hardly enough nowadays, the OS itself plus Lenovo crappy stuff already take up 24G++.

240G upward would be nice but prepare to spend around $700++ for these kind of SSD storage.

there is no free lunch in this world, you want the best, prepare to paid for it.
