Johan Cruyff exclaimed that it "sent shivers down his spine". Maradona mentioned that he had never seen a club so connected with its fans and on this day, Liverpool became his English club.
What did I take away from this? From that day, I made it a point never to turn the telly off before a game was over, to never give up and to always believe for fan power is a real thing.
YNWA.
I was in Hartamas that night with 2000 other fans. It must have been about 4am and my head was buried in my hands as the lads trooped off the pitch at halftime. A mate of mine put his hand on my shoulder and said, "macha, we'll come back. I feel it". Little did I realise he would be right. As the lads lined up to take their spot kicks, my friends and I stood in unison, hands on shoulders and my mate said, "we're gonna win it". When Dudek saved from Shevchenko, we burst into tears of happiness and all around me I saw strangers become friends.
That night led to me getting my first LFC tattoo, as it did many of my mates. That night truly made me fan of Liverpool fans. Unwavering was their support. Strong was their belief and the players responded.
In 2007 my mates and I organised our own viewing party. We pooled our resources together and got ourselves a projector, screen and we printed a giant banner. We brought with us our own scarves and flags and we managed to negotiate with the bar owner to open for us Though we lost in Athens that day, no one left as the final whistle blew. Everyone stayed back to sing YNWA and to watch the lads receive their runners-up medals. WE stayed behind to applaud AC Milan and they went to receive the trophy as did thousand of other Liverpool fans in Athens that day. As we were about to leave, this car pulled up and 4 Liverpool fans took out their flags and started chanting, "Liverpool". We lost the game that night but we won many admirers with our unrivaled support.
To kopities at Anfield every week, as well as the travelling Kop, I only have to say that you have my utmost admiration. That even when the team loses you find the strength to sing YNWA even if you have to do it with your fist clenched in defiance. This is what makes us different and it's an identity we can ill afford to lose. I cringe at the thought that this may be a dying tradition. How many of us today would have sang YNWA being 3-0 down? Only we know the answer.
YNWA. Mighty Reds - Loud and Proud.
