Here's a question. How many marquee signings have we actually had? We talk about FSG being reluctant to sign a reputable player, despite them willing to offer a fair sum for Mkhitaryan and yet, have Gillett & Hicks, or David Moores really splurged on a big name? Even if they have, how often? Since the advent of the Premiership, Liverpool haven't been known to spend big on players. It says something that at the time Houllier signed Djibril Cisse in 2004, it was for a club record of $14 million pounds, but I'd hardly consider him a marquee signing. To put things in perspective, Newcastle signed Alan Shearer for $15 million in 1996, 8 years earlier.

If memory serves me, Houllier's biggest signing was probably Jari Litmanen, and we signed him for free. Rafa also signed another player with a big reputation for free - Fernando Morientes. The only marquee player I can remember signing in the past 2 decades is Fernando Torres. Xabi Alonso is a great player but hardly a marquee signing when we got him. FSG were about to splash $25 mil on Mkhitaryan which would have made him our 2nd most expensive signing every, behind Andy Carroll and just ahead of Luis Suarez. To say they are skint and unwilling to spend is unfair. It is true however that they are fussy when it comes to who to sign? Several criteria have to be met e.g. age, stats, etc.

Fact of the matter is we seldom purchase any player who would make the top 10 list of "best players in the world" at the time we buy them, especially if there is a big transfer fee involved.
