Hey, just need some advice and a few question hope you guys can clarified for me..i did some google research but still just want to listen from the pros btw my is g55vw can this https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1600513 caddy drive fit in my g55vw and will it perform well without any slower transfer rate? If yes, then can i take the original 1TB hard disk to place it in this caddy? Getting a SSD to place in the previous HDD bay, the question is can i transfer the windows 8 from the original HHD to SSD and how? will the warranty void? I cant even find the serial number for my windows 8. If cloning can be done from HHD to SSD, doesnt this mean that i can clone all my hard disk and everyone is using the same window 8? Puzzle here thanks!

QUOTE(holloway @ Aug 9 2013, 12:47 PM) hi our g55 can fit in the 12mm caddy without problem. regarding the transfer rate. it's a sata 2 port and the stock HDD isn't that fast (5400rpm). No noticeable slow down on my side tho. And yes of course ur stock HDD to the caddy and the SSD to the hdd bay (sata 3) alot of us have done this actually. regarding the windows 8, the key actually comes along the bios on the hdd bay port so if u install fresh windows 8 it will automatically retrieve the key. unless u are installing it to a different port which u might need to extract the token (i'm not so good in this since i don't have a win 8 pre-loaded device) but thats what i know. Thanks for the quick respond! So after i install the SSD into the HDD bay i just do a fresh windows 8 installation? ahh troubling you again..how exactly do i do that?

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 06:19 PM) can you see your ssd in the bios menu? have you initiated your ssd? if you haven't, right click on your computer icon in file explorer and choose manage. then from the computer management, select storage > disk management. a dialogue should pop up and ask you to initiate the new disk. it's best to make it mbr disk. Thanks horns! Your a life saver! Yup, saw it at the bios just dont know why is not showing up at the computer..already set as mbr disk..now to create a 'New Simple Volume' for the ssd? anyway my is crucial m4 128gb do i need to update its firmware?

QUOTE(holloway @ Aug 13 2013, 07:52 PM) ure just using it for storage? if u're going to use it for os might as well just let the os format and create volume partition for u. QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 07:54 PM) No problem Yeah if you havent updated the firmware you should do that first. A simple volume is fine. Sorry im not familiar with m4. Maybe you should google and see what the latest firmware fixed. Actually im just trying weather the ssd and caddy works or not...both working fine..i just try installing win8 from an untouched win8 iso..but when i format as MBR disk..its say efi only allow gpt..change it back to gpt then this error 'We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files'..ahh cant even install

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 08:40 PM) Oh i didnt know that you wanna install w8 lol! The process should be more simple like holloway said. Now you need to do this: 1. Convert it to gpt; 2. Clear all partitions; 3. Take out stock drive and put the ssd into hdd partition; 4. Install windows. Haha! really depress now..i try backup using asus backtrack..half way the installation stop and restart..then using back the old HDD i can see my ssd is now eating up alot of space that i cant delete edit: using diskpart solve the problem yay! now the question is how come i install half way the process restart? im guessing something to do with the bios...man i suck at this big time.willing to pay any of you if anyone can help me >< This post has been edited by yumin1991: Aug 13 2013, 08:53 PM

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 09:25 PM) yeah diskpart does the trick er.. that one i don't know. i never used back tracker before. from what i've learned, it should be no problem. note that you should use fat32 for your recovery usb. Really appreciate the effort for you to help me yea! Is already on fat32 for my recovery usb..anyway if disaster again i might just take it to asus service center for the help one more question to trouble you..do i need to include the cd key in PID.txt file in windows 8 install file? or the bios will automatically update it?

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 09:51 PM) no problem man :/ for recovery usb created by back tracker, you shouldn't do anything from what i've read. read here. the cd key in pid.txt is for OS installations other than untouched w8 (e.g. w8 pro). the w8 installer will pick up the key from bios. Hmm..weird the installation of win8 is successful for me..but the activation seems to be a problem..it say my product key cant be use on this version? edit: should i disable secure boot and fast boot and enable lunch csm during installation? QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 10:00 PM) uh? what's your w8 version? are you doing the clean install or using the recovery usb created by back tracker? the stock win8 that comes with the laptop when i bought it g55vw..i downloaded an untouched win8 iso i guess is correct cause the sha1 is same as MSDN...i did the back tracker just for backup if anything go disaster..i wanted a clean install though :/

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Aug 13 2013, 10:07 PM) have you tried to plug to other system to test on the SSD? The SSD might have issue, try to figure it out 1st b4 taking it to service center. I have no idea whats the problem caused by it. Good luck if u taking it to Asus service center.... everything is working fine for me now..i've figure out what's the cause of it haha..just that i cant activate the win8..probably fake iso?

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 10:16 PM) if you opened up the administrative command prompt and issue slmgr /dlv what did the dialog tells you? you can upload the screen shot of it here. edit: there is a possibility that the activation count for that oem key to be full, that leads to the failed attempts. i used advanced tokens manager to back up the tokens and restore it when i do clean install (without online activations). you can try use that tool to save the tokens from your stock drive, then use it to restore the activation. edit2: make sure your oem key is correct for that token. you can verify the last 5 chars from the Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Action Center > Windows Activation. yeah i never activated my copy of w8 pro more than once. i just restored the tokens (and i reinstalled clean OS in this g55 countless times dy. never failed) okay trying your method for extracting the token from the stock win8 and restore on the clean win8..changing ssd and hdd like mad

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 10:52 PM) good luck man :/ i hope it's not the problem of the w8 single language version. I get this from the advanced token manager...'The store backup doesn't match with your product edition'...i guess i'm using the wrong iso? man...why this this...haizz edit: awww man the slmgr thingy doesnt not match with the stock win8..what i install is windows® retail version? QUOTE(horns @ Aug 13 2013, 11:44 PM) ah.. that's what i've suspected; the real cause of this :/ are you using the w8 usb (fat32)? if you do, you can try modify your w8 install usb by putting the ei.cfg in sources folder. the content of this ei.cfg are as follows: CODE [EditionID] Core
[Channel] OEM
[VL] 0
you might wanna put the key in sources\pid.txt, too: CODE [PID] Value=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
reinstall w8 with this modified one. good luck. is there something to do with me disabling the secure boot and fast boot and enable lunch csm? do i need to do that? or just leave it as defult?

QUOTE(horns @ Aug 14 2013, 12:21 AM) you should be fine reset them to defaults. the key now is to make the installer to be oem, instead of retail. hmm did exactly what u said..still getting the retail version..the partial product key doesnt seem to be correct with the stock win8..ahh been trying to battle it out..end up disaster lol..
