QUOTE(nairud @ Dec 2 2006, 01:35 PM) no lah...heh heh. i think there are slight differences in temperament between the breeds of Terriers. A westie is definitely not as hyper as a Yorkie or a JRT. Mine lived in an apartment for 1 and 1/2 years without issues. |

hey pennywise, you must have realized by now that Westies are notorious for being fussy about their food. mine does only eats the brand that he likes and nothing else. he is even fussy about treats.

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Jan 8 2007, 10:14 PM) What brand does your Westie take? My breeder gave me Blackwood, then when I bought Pro Plan from a pet store, the store gave me two small packs of Nutri Sauce to try it out. So far, Blackwood finish my westie was fed Royal Canin at the breeder's so he is used to it. we still use Royal Canin and a bit of Caesar for each meal, with a squirt of supplement for his coat/hair. the only treats he likes are Greenies and the chew bones. no other treat attracts him. and for some reason, my dog loves cheese though.... QUOTE(Pennywise @ Jan 9 2007, 12:03 PM) Royal Canin? I dunno whether it is the best lah but will use it as long as my dog likes it. Housebreaking was a "little" easier for us as we got him when he was 5 months old. The breeder must have taught him because all we did from day 1 was feed him, then carry him to the toilet (where we put newspaper on the floor), go in with him, close the door and said "pee pee" "poo poo" and never opened the door until he did his business (we are inside the toilet with him too just in case people think we were cruel...heh heh). We brought in magazines and newspaper to read to pass time until Sparky did his business. If he did anything wrong around the apartment (like tearing newspaper, attempting to pee on the cupboards or sofa leg etc), we would scold him and hit his bum (the area above the rear leg is fleshy and is not really painful to the dog) so he knows not to do the action again. But you need to discipline him almost immediately close to the action or else they don't know what it is you are scolding them for. |

after you Frontline your dog, it is also good to use an anti-tick disinfectant for the floors and walls of your home which will kill them and hence clean up your home. these little buggers and clever and can hop off your dog and wait a week or so to jump back on.

what you are seeing with Casper with regards to eating is very typical for Westies. my Sparky also has eating problems. sometimes he will finish his food up within 5 mins, sometimes, he will take a few hours. about once in a month or 2 months, he won't eat and then pukes bile...

smelly ears is almost always some ear infection...happened to my Westie once too. it was noticed by my dog's groomer as well. so make sure when you bathe the dog yourself to prevent water from going in to the ears.

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Feb 26 2007, 10:50 AM) I bring my Westie out for evening walks every alternate days. When I bring him back, I would wash his feet before letting him in the house. Yesterday, I noticed how black his nails were and I cant seem to clean it off. So, right now I am looking for a solution - either a shoe or a shampoo / cleaning liquid that's strong enough to remove the stain but yet not hurt him. Any suggestions? |

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Mar 9 2007, 10:16 AM) I feed Casper for 3 times a day. we got Sparky our Westie when he was 5 months and we already started feeding him twice a day at that point in time. 8.00am 12.00pm 6.00pm He is nearly 5 months old now. When I got him, he was only 2.3kg. Now he is 4.6kg. Double the weight. When do I know to stop feeding him so much? I mean adult dogs eat only once or twice a day right? When should I start feeding him less? |

i agree with the comments about training dogs. i've seen fantastic tricks and obedience shown by mix or even "pariah" dogs...it is all about proper training.
