Hey guys, I have RM1000 budget for a tablet. Currently looking at nexus 7 but I wonder how does other non-mainstream brand tablet at the same price point compare to nexus 7?

Also, if I increased my budget to about RM1500-RM2000 what other brand/models can I consider? (with better processor than Snapdragon S4)

Are you looking at the current Nexus 7 or waiting for the 2nd generation Nexus 7?

I tried the Ainol Firewire with 10.1" 2048x1536, Allwinner A31 Quad Core today and it wasn't a smooth experience sad.gif

Here are the specs:

Will find time to search for the Cube U30GT2: Rockchip 3188 Quad Core, 1920x1200 10.1" IPS display drool.gif

Firewire is 9.7"..not 10.1"

The AllWinner A31 isn't a great performer too, but GPU wise, it's better than the RK3188.
*
Yeah, not sure if the laginess was because it was a "demo" set (it was taken out of a box but can see that the box has been opened many times already).

Looking forward to try this: http://www.lelong.com.my/cube-u30gt2-rk318...3-07-Sale-P.htm

Do you have any experience owning China tablets? How about warranty support and maybe software updates?

I only use it to multitask and to read documents while I'm out.
Prefer something that does not lag. Generally a smooth tablet.
GPU does not matter much to me as I don't play games on it, at most Candy Crush.

Thats about it.
*
From video reviews I have seen, the Cube U30GT2 with Rockchip 3188 isn't smooth at all. Transitions between app drawers is not butter smooth and loading times are not fast. Web browsing smoothness like scrolling and pinch to zoom isn't as good as the branded tablets, even the Memopad HD7

So the memopad hd7 is still a better choice?
*
I'm very picky when it comes to transition and scrolling smoothness/fluidity. One reason why I find it extremely satisfying to browse the web using an Ipad.

See 2:50 onwards.

And compare to HD7. Watch 3:00 onwards

Going for branded tablet has a lot of good points. Mainly are:

1) Warranty support. Your tablet is insured and a good peace of mind.
2) Software updates from manufacturer. You should be getting regular updates from the manufacturer, even better if you get a Nexus device as you will receive the latest updates FIRST and not having to wait for gazillion months like the other brands
3) Good optimized hardware and software- Like you can easily see in the video comparison. This is my opinion lah.

Oh not to forget, I don't really like the grey screen colour when the display is off, doesn't look nice at all. Look at Nexus 7 tongue.gif

Oh, too bad.
Any idea on how much is 10" Nexus 10?
Or any equivalent 10", that can be rooted and custom ROM (if possible)?
*
You already answered yourself: RM8XX

There is no equivalent because Nexus 10 is such a high resolution device with still decent specs.

And most importantly, it's a NEXUS device meaning good and fast future updates from Google. For other devices, sorry lah you have to wait a long time like a turtle or probably no updates at all . For China tablets, probably ZERO updates and bad warranty support.

Hi,

If I wait until next year Jan, would the price drop to <RM399, as I plan to buy for my 2+ yrs old kid for casual use.
*
Probably 2nd hand as I doubt the manufacturer will let the price drop that low. They'll most likely replace the model with another one at the same price point or something. I suggest you go for 2nd hand units if you don't mind, you could even find a Nexus 7 at that price actually smile.gif

Where should i buy nexus 7 from?
Around KL/Selangor

Try DirectD or SatuGadget (search in LYN), they're selling at RM699.

Anyways, if I were you, I'd just top up RM200 to get the latest Nexus 7 2013 wink.gif

Hi..

I'm looking for a 8" tablet from samsung between galaxy tab 3 8" and note 2 8" . Which one is better? I have a acer a500 currently and ipad but finding that android gives more flexibility. my acer sadly got no 3g. so can't use it to go online outside. my purpose is mainly for surfing, reading online materials, ebooks and utilize to take notes and some light games. battery lasting is important at least for a day. other brands recommendation are welcome. tq

Wait for the LG G pad 8.3 (google it) smile.gif

Let me try asking again - which 6" to 8"  tablet has the highest PPI?

And are there any other factors I should take into consideration when looking for a good e-Book reader?
*
The 8 inch tablets that have 2560x1600 resolution. Namely Samsung Tab S and the Tab 8.4 pro and the one from Amazon.

Honestly if you can be patient, it's worth waiting for the upcoming devices, namely the Xiaomi Mipad, Asus Memopad 8 with 1200p resolution, Nexus 8, Note 8 2014. The last 2 devices are only rumours but highly likely, just a matter of time.. Just like we all know there would be a Galaxy S6 or a Note 4.

But honestly speaking if you don't need the active stylus used in the Samsung Note devices, there's hardly any merit to go for Samsung devices. Laggy, full of bloatware, feels sluggish navigating through the device, delay when launching apps, etc are all caused by the lack of software optimisation despite having high end specifications. You can have the best hardware but when you can't even make full use of it to optimise the software then you're going to get a sluggish, "slow" device compared to something like a Nexus tablet or mobile phone. 100% stock Android, blazing fast, super responsive like using an iphone/Ipad.

I'm using a Note 10.1 2014 with bla bla Octa core bla bla 3GB ram bla bla but NO WHERE as fluid and responsive as my old Nexus 10 which has lower specifications. The only reason I got this tablet is due to the S Pen. That's it.

Heck, even my old Nexus 7 feels much nicer to use than the Note 10.1 2014.

if for data can  use wassap or not? if yes then ok for me...right now aim for mediapad x1 but looking other option

You have to "hack" it because whatsapp actually requires you to have a sim card with a number. Google it.

If you require only data then it's easy to recommend. Just get any LTE tablet will do.

And don't forget your budget. What is it??
