Hello everyone,

I hope everyone's doing good.
Guys and girls I need to know a few things before I can proceed to the conclusion.
I'm going to do bs software engineering but I have messed up with choosing a university, I have been hearing that APU aka UTCI is a very good option to go for , but I have read many negative comments about APU here at lowyat forum.
I don't know if I'm making a right choice going for APU?sad.gif
The main thing is study environment plus the lecturers , ( I mean how well are the lecturers of APU )
If anyone of you is doing software engineering from APU , please do let me know about the lecturers, plus how good is the university and all.
I can't visit the campus because I'm applying as an international student, I'm not from malaysia .

If anyone can answer my questions that would be much appreciated.

Hoping to get answers from all you guys and girls. smile.gif

I not sure about APU.

In my opinion, UM, USM, MMU and UTM is quiet good in Software Engineering compare to APU.

Please do check their website for more information.

Thanks cnvery for the answer , smile.gif
Can you please let me know about taylors university malaysia?
Are they good at software engineering?
I mean do they have a good faculty for bs software engineering course?
And is there anyone else who can let me know about APU AND TAYLORS?
How can you compare both these universities in terms of bs software engineering course?
I'm looking for reasonable answers, because I have to apply for the coming intake , and I don't have much time because I would be applying as an international student.
Looking forward for more answers smile.gif

APU is so popular because of Staffordshire,
MMU is still better in term of recognition, teaching quality
Taylor's is not so good on engineering because its not recognised by BEM

Hey bros, in the industry and all the IT companies are trying to grab APU graduates to work for them.
If they dun have the quality, why the companies will do so?
I doubt about MMU.
Plus APU can get 2 certs but MMU only local cert.

The company take APU graduates because of the student is good not the lecturers. Try for yourself and see.
And regarding the tips and stuff... My friend gets full tip for engineering exam but still get C. U can imagine how shitty engineering faculty is... and u did mention [RECENTLY GOT THE RECOGNITION]
IT is still okay imo. But if u really have cash go for monash or something.

I'm not saying that all the lecturers here are good or all are bad. basically this happen to all universities.
Yes. Company take APU gratuates because the student is good not the lecturer.
But let me ask you, who is the one that teach and train the students?

At least over here, we are train to be a professional graduate not normal graduate.
We are not just memorizing from the book/notes only, but we are being teach the way to apply all we learn into real life.

With full tips and your friend still get a C, then it very obviously show that is ur friend's problem.

Not sure the next degree in engineering intake is in January or February 2014, and I'm still stuck on what course to choose...heard that Mechatronics is still not safe to take as it still doesn't have accreditation.
I won't be taking E&E due to "overpopulation" in industrial area.

I think TARC offers more specialisms. But not accounting(they have 2). Doing account in APU quite weird I think, and I heard there are some colleges are much better for accounting course instead of APU
Sunway, KDU and TARC.

i think u better choose this out of three...
UNITEN, MMU or UTP.

Those 3 are good private @ semi-government university.
research facilities are better than any private uni in Malaysia.
research grant as well.

UNITEN = TNB
MMU = TM
UTP = PETRONAS

I'm a proud graduate of Software Engineering in APU. APU has a good track record in its Computing and IT courses. Their syllabus, so far, is the most complete ones after I have seen other universities. If you are looking for the quality instead of the environment, APU will be the right place.

Well, I agree with you that APU has a SOLID record for all their computing and IT courses. They also produce extremely versatile and competent graduates from my experience.

However, your marketing talk should end there. While I have no doubts that their syllabus is sound, to state that they are the most complete based on your experience is just a lot of crap. Who are you to judge other Universities structure? And how many universities have you seen?

Sigh. I kinda dislike these embedded marketing moles.

guys pls think twice b4 joining there. Im not complaining all but some. Mainly some of the lecturers are like robots, and they are teaching mathematics. Imagine how a class will be running if it is running by robot. Tht lecturer having his own policy, his own hardest method, and don't understand whether the student understand what is teaching or no. How a class will be running like that. But im sure tht lecturer knows some of the class students are weak in tht class but then he still creates hard assignment and exams. Finally 1/3 of tht class got failed their module. And some even having prblems with their results, some of their marks of assignment or exam are not even on the system but the grade still given to the student without assignment or exam. But the head will be saying that all the lecturers will be monitored in the classes, but they just checking what and how lecturers teaching but do they know how the student in the class understanding. Lots of students are suffering in here because of this. and cost of resitting exam and retaking module cry.gif . And the best part of this is, if you fail one module then you will not able to get your certificate or enter your next course degree/diploma/..... until clear your fail cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

But not all the modules and lecturers are like this. Other than this everything is fine and good. But we still are waiting for the new campus building, since officials updates the new campus will be ready to go end of 2015. probs. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

As I heard...some students got their cert even though they are having alot of resits...
I wonder how they got cert without passing module...
I'm an apu student...no more dual cert for apu...
Be careful when choosing APU...
They increased price...
They will make you fail...

As I heard...some students got their cert even though they are having alot of resits...
I wonder how they got cert without passing module...
I'm an apu student...no more dual cert for apu...
Be careful when choosing APU...
They increased price...
They will make you fail...

I'm regretting joining APU
*
But APU website still stated that have dual cert....

Anyway, thanks for the advice

I'm thinking of applying to APU for March intake for software engineering course, but what Im hearing here, APU isn't actually that good of an option. Is it really that bad? If so, what other uni are well known for their IT department?

Wow you are reviving in a very old thread, I suggest you open your own topic.

I am a software engineering graduate from APU at December 2013. What I can say that is, definitely cannot expect spoon feed in APU. You MUST find your own information related to the module yourself because lecturers in APU don't teach much. They give you assignment at week 2 of the semester, expect hand in at week 16, and just tell you a couple of points for exams. You must ask the lecturer to know what they want, or else you will never know and you will end up getting low grades. Final Year Projects are even more independent, you must determine your own topic, your own schedule and do documentations yourself without much materials guiding you.

It was relatively easy for me, in fact I had a distinction diploma and first class degree from the same uni. But IMHO if you are expecting a lot of guidance don't go to APU. I'm the type of person who don't like classes and like to self learn.

Other private uni that are well known for IT would be MMU, Monash and Curtin. Public uni would be UM or UTM.

Go with kumiko_91's suggestion. I'm still in APU, and for around 2 years now, APU cretainly has benefits and flaws on its both sides. I will not say "APU isn't a good option" based on my experience, and I will definitely NOT say that APU is the best concerning I've never been in any other universities before and it'll be shame if I make blind comparisons that're merely based on my "beliefs".

Plenty of Microsoft top software suites for free are available since APU has license under Microsoft Dreamspark including the top-tier IDE (Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise Edition) for your C, C++, VB.Net, C#... I've met a few lecturers who really couldn't teach, but some are good lecturers as long as you pay attention on their lectures and do distributed works during lab/tutorial sessions. Keyword is "pay attention", develop a habit to take notes, otherwise when you can't catch up the course you may, end up blaming APU for your possible mistakes. And yes, full dependencies on lecturers and expect them to deliver everything are not the way to succeed, even my Java lecturer advised us that.

I choose APU because I like APU's environment that I can fully concentrate. I didn't like the idea of a very big campus and uni with a lot of co-curricular activities.

Recommendation from a few friends who work at IT sectors. Tbh, I once cut down my list that left only APU and MMU to choose before advancing my studies, but APU saves me a lot fuel brows.gif

And yes it means, if MMU is the nearest to where I live, I would be choosing MMU.

What APU has said about the new campus launch date has very high chances to be true this time. Since I've witnessed the progress of new campus construction with my own eyes.

As compared to?

If you are comparing with Sunway or Heriot-Watt, then the answer is a resounding NO! Then is based on my understanding on the emphasis and teaching staff of that university. unless things has drastically changed over the past few months.

UTAR is also quite good in Actuarial Science.

But I already had a certificate in Foundation in Management so it might be difficult for me to apply in UTAR. I had look through Sunway also but their MUET requirement must be at least Band 4 and I got Band 3. How about UCSI? Any more suggestions?

Wait - what? Why would it be difficult to apply to UTAR with that foundation? Generally, they will accept most foundation programmes with a 2.0 CGPA unless stated explicitly.

In regards to MUET - my advice is to just try to apply first and see what the counsellors say. They may even waive that requirements if it is a Sunway entry Req. and not an official Approval Letter Req.

try these two options first and once you know that it is not a viable option, then seek for the alternatives. Between UCSI and APU - I would think APU is a better option.

Does anyone here know which are the intake dates for masters degree program in APU other than September? Their website only says the next intake is September 2016 and that's it.

When you're joining this university, go for the South City/Fortune Park accommodation instead of the on-campus accommodation. Stay there for 4 months, because your contract is enforced by then. Once you make friends and/or get used to the lifestyle, move out ASAP with friends or to another place.

Should not be a problem as long as your either have a credit in Add maths at SPM or have Add maths level subjects in your foundation (which you probably would have).

Usually i would advise people to make a new post asking the question you asked. Posting in the APU thread wont get you the necessary response. Usually, there is an unspoken rule that we don't say negative things or give bad review within the university's main thread.
