I'm moving this to the Arts section, since the threadstarter's asking for people's opinions.

Serious lack of originality, plus copy-pasta via tracing existing artwork of widely available, mass-produced Shounen junk + some other manga that I forgot what the name is with pretty boys and touching balls. I don't see any bit of talent in copying the drawings of someone else's hardwork.

Needs to be purified with fire, urgently. That friend of yours needs to come up with his own original idea. I recommend:
1. Work for Gempak.
2. Churn out simple, haphazardly done comic with half-baked artwork and unoriginal idea.
3. Do it 3 times a month.
4. ????
5. PROFIT!!!!

i cant say whether it's good or not. probably he'll need to draw an original character. if he's learning, then referencing is a good idea, but NEVER trace. never. then after he's built up enough confidence, he should try drawing/designing his own manga/anime characters.

agreed.

there are commonly two ways to learn to draw:

i. copying/referencing

usually this is the fastest of the two, where u'll quickly learn how other people do it. i do this all the time, and there's nothing wrong with it. lets say u like naruto so much, and u cant stop dwg them. that's fine. but u must make a point that once u're too good copying naruto, try drawing him WITHOUT referencing. purely by imagination/memory.

that's where the actual learning takes place.

ii. imagination

this is slower, but u'll build more original visual vocabulary. if u're talented, u'll develop this skill pretty fast. combine this with the referencing technique, u'll build a massive vocabulary on ur fingertips, just like that.

i started off with copying thundercats, transformers, gijoe and the likes. not forgetting american comics like superman, xmen and batman. not many mangas at the time except probably akira. once the hongkong comic flood started, i started to shift, in my techniques start to merge. then the anime/manga flood. influences me even alot more.

these influences might make u original, or might make u the biggest copy-cat of all. it's up to u.

Here's a tip:

1) create a original character, or choose one ready-made character
2) draw his/her face
3) if ugly, repeat part 2) until its acceptable
4) SKETCH out a rough outline for the body
5) if decapitated, repeat part 4) until its not so
6) NOW draw the real lines/details of the body
7) stand back and have a good look at it
8) repeat step 1) to 7) if its ugly, until its not
9) scan it at a minimum of 300dpi
10) put your name on it, and watermarks all over the picture
11) if u want to CG it, do NOT do step 9) and 10)
12) CG it if u want to, and then do part 9) and 10)
13) host it in somewhere on the net
14) pimp it
15) get offers to be a full-time cartoonist *cough*

and there u have it, 15 steps to ownage. laugh.gif

Before i read this post, i think your friend didn't trace. Tracing artwork is totally "lame". If you following the illustration, then it's consider "ok". I last time also follow the illustration, but NEVER trace. TRACING is like cheating directly. I seldom draw now. Drawing anime not my type. I prefer CG or editing in photoshop. But my friend is a veli good in drawing anime. He got take part in gempak competition, few times. He got 3rd or 4th prize. He loves to draw comics and coloring his comics. Really admire his artwork, he got the "brain" to draw! haha tongue.gif
